Plotwise, this film hasn't really got much going for it. Dudikoff and James become involved with some problems when a few marines in Bermuda shorts get kidnapped by......ninjas.

Someones dad has been kidnapped too, because the bad guy in the white suit wants to create the perfect specimen. And he must be dangerous, because one of his henchmen has a lazy eye, and kills other ninjas for a laugh.

The guy with the lazy eye is the toughest ninja because on the beach, he stands on a rock and makes threatening hand gestures to Dudikoff.

The second installment of the series isn't very good, but is made watchable thanks tho Steve James. Besides from his awesome hair, he spouts out one-liners and is the person in the film who can do that thing where lots of people jumps on him and he can throw them all off at once and get them to sound like someone has just got a strike bowling.

Dudikoff doesn't fare as well though. he spends the majority of the film pouting, but you know he is the American ninja because he gently slides a sword across a bad guy and they die.

It's typical 80's fodder from Cannon, so you know what to expect.

Light on plot

Silly fight scenes

sillier bad guy

and even sillier music which plays when ever there is an impending fight scene.

It's forgettable stuff, but worth watching if your a fan of the franchise.

On the plus side, the soundtrack is by George Clinton which gives the film that "Miami Vice" feel. On the remote island nation of Blackbeard Island U.S. Marines who guard the embassy are disappearing...being kidnapped by ninjas who dress all in black and never stand out. Two Rangers are called in to replace the marines and find out what is going on, Curtis Jackson (Steve James) and Joe Armstrong (Michael Dudikoff) who contrary to his anme fights with his feet.

The movie is 80's corny. The fight scenes are over choreographed and done to music that makes the fighting "light" in nature. No one owns a gun so they all fight ninja style. I enjoyed the film as a campy look at the 1980's. As a stand alone film, it is passe.

No f-bombs, sex, or nudity.

A fast-paced, bone-crunching martial arts thriller sequel, which has a slightly better plot than its predecessor, is crisply filmed and simply exciting from start to finish as U.S. Ninja warriors Michael Dudikoff and Steve James punch, kick, leap and slice their way through the usual black-clad villains who are working for a drug baron, intent on creating his own lethal 'genetically engineered' Ninja army. The premise is pure comic book and this may be a Cannon movie, but the production values seem pretty good and I think non-martial artist Dudikoff's fighting is a bit better than it was in the jokey original. Great '80s score, too.

This isn't a bad effort for a film of this genre. I know the acting is shocking, the script is full of gaping holes and the plot is bordering on farcial. A mad bloke has built a lab on a tropical island (why not) to grow his own super ninjas from American soldiers, so the American Government send more American soldiers to try to stop him. Rangers Dudikoff and James to be exact. Cue lots of scrapping, on the beach, in the street, a hotel room, a pub, the street again and finally in an unnecessary arena on the island which I presume mad baddie bloke had made for putting on shows with his super ninjas. If you like ropey dialogue, comedic fighting and Michael Dudikoff in jeans that are too tight (how does he fight in them anyway?) then this film is right up your alley. USA USA USA.

What can I say about American Ninja 2 that hasn't been said before? `camp', `awful', `I haven't seen a girl naked' were the reviews when it went straight to video.
This winner of the coveted 'Campest Movie Award 1987' is a modern celluloid classic that ranks up there with the Godzilla films for depth, plot and mad ninja skillz, its obvious when viewing that Stevie Wonder was in charge of the camerawork with direction from David Hasselhoff, special effects are clearly done by Budget On A Shoestring Inc.
Watch in awe as a non descript ninja gets a beating, choke as you drive an oil tanker through the gaping holes in the script, look away in disgust as a burly Marine gets his USMC issued dress tunic ripped and torn off him in an homo-erotic struggle inside a drinking establishment, cry with joy when the heroes finally defeat the enemy and high 5 each other at the same time complementing each other physiques with a friendly bit of banter such as `you been working out?'. A bit like Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon but with beer bosoms.
It makes you want to complete your degree in Movie Buffology.
