Product Description

Product Description

Cobain – Montage of Heck invites you to experience Kurt’s life, art and mind through his own unique lens, bringing you as close to the generation-defining icon as it’s possible to get.

Experience Kurt Cobain like never before in the first fully-authorized portrait of the famed rock music icon. Director Brett Morgen expertly blends Cobain's personal archive of art, music, and never-before-seen home movies with animation and revelatory interviews from his family and closest confidantes. Following Kurt from his earliest years in Aberdeen, WA, through the height of his fame, a visceral and detailed cinematic insight of an artist at odds with his surroundings emerges.

While Cobain craved the spotlight even as he rejected the trappings of fame, his epic arc depicts a man who stayed true to his earliest punk rock convictions, always identifying with the "outsider" and ensuring the music came first.

Fans and those of the Nirvana generation will learn things about Cobain they never knew while those who have recently discovered the man and his music will know what makes him the lasting icon that he is.

When I first heard about this film, it seemed long overdue. with many poor biog videos previously released (with the honourable exception of About a Son which is very good) ; and with full access to the archives, what could go wrong?

Sadly, the film really doesn't live up to the hype and, in my opinion, is a real missed opportunity.

Most of the footage in the film is already easily available on youtube and other sites. The only real new pieces are the baby years and the private home footage with Courtney and Frances.

I didn't expect (or want) the film to go into his death but I did expect to see more about the man, which the film proclaimed to do.

Essentially, the film is in three stages:

The baby years

There is a lot of footage of Kurt as a young child. This is ok but essentially is just a film of a child at play, little different to many others. The only real parts of any interest are the interviews with the family members, and especially his father who has had a lot of bad press over the years, so it was good to hear him included.

The 'band' years

This is the period where Nirvana were formed, but, as mentioned before, much of the footage has already been seen. It is always good to hear Krist talk about Kurt as they were friends and not simply band members. For that reason, I'm not concerned that Dave Grohl isn't in the film.'

The Courtney years

This is probably the main bit that people will not have seen before and, does indicate that they really were in love although whether this deteriorated at the end is, of course, open to debate.

After waiting many months to see this film, I finally got round to buying the DVD, having missed the cinema showings as a result of focusing on my A levels. Content with my results, yesterday I sat back and watched it. It was certainly worth the wait.

Morgen has made an intelligent film combining archive footage from Cobain's life, interviews with those closest to him and gripping animations of drawings from his journals and sketch books. This combination made for a vivid cinematic experience and for those who are visual, watching it is a field day from start to finish.

More importantly, the film paints the most intimate portrait of Cobain available. It is clear that he had a vivid imagination, was incredibly sensitive (if we're looking at him in terms of popular psychology, he'd definitely be categorised as a 'highly sensitive person') and used his talents to build a legacy that will be remembered for centuries. But on the flip side of his brilliance, Kurt Cobain was a troubled person. Heartbroken by his parents' divorce, feeling rejected and misunderstood, the darkness in Cobain's life started at an early stage in his life, was amplified throughout the course of his adolescence, and grew to be unbearable as he struggled with a toxic cocktail of fame, bipolar disorder and drug addiction. The fact that his wife, Courtney, whom he loved with complete devotion, was also a drug addict made it harder for him to break free of his problems. In the end, we know that he was driven to take his own life (and no, I don't subscribe to the conspiracy theories).

My sole criticism of the film is that it ended abruptly.

Like others who have reviewed this film, I was convinced this would be a long overdue celebration of Kurt's life and his musical persona. However, I only really enjoyed the first half and it went a bit downhill from there.

The film seems to be set out in four stages:

a) His very early years as a child, interesting it may be but it seems very bland as his early years could be described as very 'normal'.
b) His teenage years, which were interesting, but were easily deduced by songs he wrote e.g. Serve the Servants (problems with parents).
c) Growth of Nirvana, which if you are a fan of Nirvana you would probably find to be pretty obvious and easily accessible via YouTube etc.
d) Marriage with Courtney - all accounts were only really discussed by Courtney, so it was more about her experiences than anything else. Also if you are like me and dislike her, it is a very annoying part of the film.

The only interesting interviewees were Krist Novoselic, his ex-girlfriend and his parents. The last segment was all-too dominated by Courtney.

There are many better sources of interest to read about Kurt's life which are far more interesting and intimate - e.g 'Love & Death, The Murder of Kurt Cobain' which actually interviews his friends and close family members. But, I suppose if you have a passing interest of Nirvana/Kurt it is an interesting insight. A bit lacking in depth for me though.

Whilst definitely worth seeing, I agree with my fellow reviewer – the film felt like a missed opportunity. Except for the private footage which provides the insight into Kurt’s life with Courtney, there is nothing much to be discovered – there are so many books, documentaries, articles about Kurt Cobain and his life, music and, ultimately, death, that it is hard to reveal something unexpected about the extraordinary man. "Montage of Heck" is still engaging and fascinating, but after reading both Heavier Than Heaven: The Biography of Kurt Cobain (Scepte 21's) and Kurt Cobain: Journals (both of which I very much recommend) I doubt the film would let you further into Kurt's brain.

Still, this is a great cinematic portrait of a complex (if not troubled) talent. I LOVED the fact that Cobain’s death was only mentioned "in passing" in the end. I applaud the fact that morbidity was avoided.
