Product Description

Product Description

When her father dies, Tamahine, a lovely young half-Polynesian girl, is sent to England to visit her father's cousin, headmaster of a celebrated boys' public school. She has a disturbing influence on boys and masters alike, however, with all and sundry falling under the spell of her natural beauty and charm!

This sparkling comedy stars Nancy Kwan as the free-spirited Tamahine, with Dennis Price as the staid guardian who is both bewitched and inspired by her presence. Boasting an equally strong supporting cast, the film earned a BAFTA nomination for Geoffrey Unsworth, the double-Oscar winning cinematographer whose credits include Cabaret, Tess and 2001: A Space Odyssey. Tamahine is featured here in a brand-new transfer from the original film elements in its as-exhibited aspect ratio.

The NETWORK DVD is not perhaps their best quality release. The colour leaves a bit to be desired, and there are one or two scratches, but the picture is clear and in good 2.35.1 ratio (bars top and bottom). I thought the sound was a bit harsh sometimes. No subtitles. If, like me, you are a fan of Nancy Kwan you will not be disapointed. Sexy, charming, and with a good sense of comedy, she make this rather lacklustre film just about worthwhile. The trouble, for me, is that it seems to struggle to be a comedy, a romance, and a drama, and Director Phillip Leacock seems to be unsure himself as to the kind of film he is directing.I also felt the main support cast wrong. John Fraser as an 18 year old 6th former just doesn't work, neither do James Fox and Derek Fowlds. Dennis Price, an actor I like, seems wrong (I really missed Cecil Parker), and somehow the whole doesn't really gell. However, as I said, Miss Kwan is, for some (me included), worth the price of admission alone. Recomended with reservations

One of the first films I can remember seeing at the Cinema.
Little remembered today, but featuring a galaxy of British cinema talents of the era.
