Richard Johnson gives a suave performance as Hugh 'Bulldog' Drummond in this cool '60s take on the exploits of H.C. McNeile s famous fictional hero. Giving Bond a run for his money, Deadlier Than the Male sees Drummond involved with daring escapes, murderous plots, femmes fatales and dolly birds by the score! The film is presented here as a High Definition transfer from the original film elements in its original aspect ratio.

When insurance underwriter Hugh Drummond learns of the deaths of top oil executives at the hands a pair of beautiful but brutal female assassins he is convinced that it is the work of an international crime syndicate. His investigations uncover that the syndicate is after a big oil concession, and to get it they must commit regicide...

NB: As is their wont, Amazon have unhelpfully bundled together the reviews for both the DVD and Blu-ray versions of this film. This review refers to Network's single disc DVD.

1967's Deadlier Than the Male is the kind of film that Mike Meyers must have loved growing up, reinventing Sapper's Bulldog Drummond for the swinging Sixties as a James Bond-style insurance investigator-cum-superspy in a plot filled with killer cigars, giant chessmen, female assassins and delightfully fey villainy from Nigel Green and casting one-time Bond candidate Richard Johnson in the lead. Unfortunately he's saddled with an American nephew in a futile attempt to catch a slice of the US market, while Suzanna Leigh, badly dubbed and moving with all the grace of a docker, scowl permanently in place, is hardly anybody's idea of a Bond girl. But against that there's Elke Sommer's enthusiastic sadist and light fingered nympho Sylvia Koscina offing various oil executives, the film makes swinging 60s London look great and it's as stylish as a vintage Avengers episode, offering lots of fun without ever outstaying its welcome.

Network DVD's DVD boasts a fine 2.35:1 transfer of Deadlier Than the Male with plentiful extras - vintage location reports, cast and crew interviews (with Nigel Green spending more time talking about Zulu and Tobruk than the film he's promoting), stills gallery and trailer - though these are all present on their reissue which also includes the disappointing sequel Some Girls Do.

Well done Amazon!! None of these reviews apply to the Network BLU RAY out June 2015. Why do they keep doing this?. Can't be Rocket Science to put reviews under the correct DVD. (5 stars by the way cos the film is great fun and Network do have a good rep. Sorry if these premature remarks upset some folk.))

Originally released in November 1966, Deadlier Than The Male stars Richard Johnson as Hugh 'Bulldog' Drummond. This is a very good 2.35:1 aspect ratio presentation of the film and I did not notice any problem with the blu ray transfer whatsoever. This could have been because I was enjoying this fantastic film and was distracted by the wonderful Elke Sommer.

Soecial Features are Original Theatrical Traiker in HD, Exclusive Image Galleries in HD, Promotional Materials PDFs, Archive Interviews and Location Reports (black and white footage).

Good price too.

2.35:1, Mono, Region B, English Subtitles (on the film only), 98 minutes runtime, Mono sound, 24 fps

Quirky 1960s `Bond` style spy thriller. It`s not a patch on a Connery Bond picture but very entertaining romp none the less. Surprisingly violent for the time in which this was made it was issued an `X` certificate (18) but quite mild now by modern standards. The late Richard Johnson is at his suave best in this adventure and overall the film has very good production values. The picture quality on this Blu-ray is outstanding for a film made 50 years ago and the soundtrack whilst mono still packs quite a punch. If you enjoy 60s films in general and spy thrillers in particular I`m sure this film will not disappoint.

Don't miss this one - it's a thoroughly entertaining tongue in cheek espionage thriller with many of the thrills in the shape of beautifully un-clad females that are also quite deadly. I think it's based on the old Bull dog drummond who is in the shape of a perfect uncle who has an electric mind, who is an expert at everything, and can fight his way out of any situation - but in a complete old style Englishman way. His nephew is the slightly naive would be assistant who tags along and ends up getting hopelessly involved. I won't say any more in case it spoils it for you. If you like escapist spoof spy films, you will love this one - don't miss it.
