The 80s slasher film fan is well catered for if they collect on Blu, with a ton of stuff appearing in the US and UK. X-Ray, from 1981, is not generally considered a 'slasher classic' as the 88 Films moniker would suggest, but the story of a woman who visits hospital just to pick up test results before being incarcerated amidst a homicidal regime at the hands of someone slightly annoyed at childhood occurrences is so bizarre I actually found it quite fun to watch. There are touches of odd humour here and there, with almost all of the characters acting in a suspicious (or crazy) manner - it's almost as if the hospital exists in the Twilight Zone. The unusual music score gives it an offbeat edge too. I'm not a big slasher fan because they're mostly formulaic and too similar to stand out from one another, so anything that makes one of them a bit different is usually something that more so attracts me personally. With X-Ray there is a fairly common absence of logic throughout, which may annoy some viewers but I think it’s not necessarily a bad thing when it comes to what is almost surrealist cinema. Oh and the film stars Playboy lady Barbi Benton, who looks pretty good throughout, with a brief bit of nudity along the way.

The film has been released on a double bill Blu in the US (with Schizoid) - in the UK 88 have put it on a disc by itself, but embellished it with a few extras that were not present for the US release. 88's packaging is nice all round, with their distinctive (blood) red slimline case, and a reversible cover showing off alternate title/cover 'Hospital Massacre' on the other side.

This is indeed a long lost treasure of an 80's movie, very cool slasher film with your usual cheesy set up and story but so much fun, this is certainly very different from your usual traditional slashers with its surrealism and nightmarish scenes, this time a killer is lurking on the 8th and 9th floor of a creepy hospital and one woman's past is back to get her! Loads of cool kills, not major gore but plenty of blood spurting! There is some nice nudity too and plenty of it which is a tradition in all good 80's slashers, Barbi Benton the lead female star was a playboy model and is very beautiful and has a very demanding role with plenty of screaming and fighting as well, this is a rare horror that certainly must be in your 88 films slasher collection.

Blu-ray has a nice picture quality for an old 80's movie, 1080p HD,
Features include a 20-min interview/making of the film with the director, a 15-min interview with the cinematographer, a commentary, trailers,
you get a reversible sleeve with the original hospital massacre cover!
Region B only, 89-mins, 1981. English language.
As usual it comes in a nice slim red Blu-ray case.

‘X-Ray’ has proven to be another welcome resurrection of a long-neglected slasher, helmed by genre polymath Boaz Davison; a sterling filmmaker who has been attached to many action/exploitation titles I have considerable fondness for. About ten years ago I watched a poor VHS rip of ‘X-Ray’ (aka) Hospital Massacre and, truth be known, outside of appreciating the awesomely voluptuous figure of Barbi Benton , the stormy haze of aggravated pixel and patent VHS murk greatly prejudiced my view of this, as yet, unheralded gem of 80’s horror.
Finally seeing ‘X-Ray’ on a HD format was a genuinely revelatory experience; and while low budget horror films such as this are usually made as an expeditious way to make money, this, inevitably, is also why the so-called cinematic cognoscenti actively eschew giving them any shred of artistic credit; even those ubiquitous pundits that selectively praise certain splatter movies, do so cautiously; they never slaughter the sacred cow; as the very same titles get so frequently eulogised that it begins to sound a tad disingenuous; wholly safe: the very antithesis of objective critique.

Interesting addition to the slasher genre - a borderline 'nasty' in it's day. Definately worth a watch and Barbi Benton is a decent bit of eye candy even though she is completely out of her depth bless her. She still manages to give it a go though. Some cool slayings - another triumph for our chums at 88 Films - they and Arrow seem to be going from strength to strength may they blossom and prosper evermore. .
