Product Description

Product Description

The Lost World is a 1960 fantasy adventure film based on the novel of the same name by Arthur Conan Doyle and from legendary fantasy/adventure director and producer Irwin Allen (Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, The Towering Inferno, The Poseidon Adventure) An eccentric scientist (Claude Rains Lawrence of Arabia) returns from the Amazon with news of a distant plateau where creatures from the dawn of time still prowl the jungle. To prove his story, he gathers a team of explorers, including a journalist (David Hedison - Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea), a playboy adventurer (Michael Rennie - The Day the Earth Stood Still), a beautiful socialite (Jill St John - Diamonds Are Forever) and a pilot (Fernando Lamas - The Violent Ones) with a secret plan of revenge. But an unexpected attack on their camp leaves the group stranded in a world of dinosaurs and other exotic creatures, where humans are no longer lords of the earth, they are helpless prey!

Format: DVD
Irwin Allen's 1960 version of The Lost World may be shot in CinemaScope, but stylistically it fits right in with his 60s sci-fi TV shows (indeed, stock footage from the film found its way into his Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea series, as did co-star David Hedison). Originally intended to feature state-of-the-art stop-motion animation from Willis O. Brien, the special effects genius behind the groundbreaking 1925 version as well as King Kong, the ever-economical producer opted instead for the tried and trusted and, most important of all, much cheaper technique of supergluing fins and horns on real lizards and having them double for dinosaurs despite looking like nothing so much as lizards with fins and horns superglued on them. However, even had he spent the extra time and money, this modernised version was never going to be the definitive one: 'dinosaur' action is fairly thin on the ground and the novel's finale that sees a pterodactyl on the loose in London is unceremoniously dropped. Instead there's a lot of wandering around the Fox ranch and backlot, cameo appearances from the odd poisonous giant plant left over from Journey to the Center of the Earth, a tribe of natives with a yen for human sacrifice, a fortune in diamonds and the obligatory erupting volcano finale, though it retains a certain nostalgic Saturday kids matinée appeal even if most of today's kids wouldn't sit still for it. Claude Rains gets to grandstand as Professor Challenger while Michael Rennie's aristocratic big game hunter seems almost like a blueprint for George Lazenby's take on James Bond, with Jill St. John tagging along for no good reason other than Arthur Conan Doyle's thoughtless failure to provide any female roles in the original novel.

Fox's new Region 1 NTSC DVD boasts a fine 2.

I have been watching this movie since way back in the late 60's.

I would watch it with my mom and dad religiously every time it was broadcast, usually on a weekend.
They loved it just as much as I did so it was a really cool family-oriented experience.

Sure the oldie but moldie Willis H. O'Brien version is also VERY cool, but hey, you know what?
This one has the goddess-like Jill St John in her ever so edible prime, so there!

Awesome transfer and screen ratio. Highly recommended!

The Lost World is directed and produced by Irwin Allen, who also co-adapts the screenplay with Charles Bennett from the novel written by Arthur Conan Doyle. It stars Michael Rennie, Jill St. John, Claude Rains, David Hedison, Fernando Lamas and Richard Haydn. A CinemaScope production in De Luxe Color, music is by Paul Sawtell & Bert Shefter and cinematography by Winton C. Hoch.

A loose adaptation of Doyle's novel, this version was the first talkie to surface after the silent original back in 1925. The story pitches a diverse group of travellers/explorers onto an Amazonian plateau where it is hoped that proof of living dinosaurs can be made. Monster malarkey does follow.

Given that it has a diverse reputation and average ratings on internet movie sites, you would be fooled into thinking this was a flop. Far from it! It made very good coin at the box office and it continues to be a well received fantasy favourite shown on TV schedules during holiday periods. In fact, there is a cult fan base out there whom steadfastly will defend the pic from violent attack!

Irwin Allen used his average budget in areas other than for the creature effects, this is obvious, while it's true to say that most of the acting is from the school of ham and cheese sandwich. Yet the slurpasaur effects are engaging and effective. Oh for sure none of the creatures look like dinosaurs, which begs the question on why didn't they just write it as a new raft of undiscovered dinosaurs? But suspense and peril is eked out and the world created by the art design team is impressively interesting.

The usual character stereotypes exist, including a surplus to requirements female character (St. John), who is attired in pink trousers and brings her pet poodle pooch along for the trip!

This is another high concept fantasy film from Irwin Allen. Whilst it never reaches the amazing Heights of Towering Inferno or Poseidon Adventure this remains a fun if slightly dull adventure film.

The Lost World is a classic Arthur Conan Doyle story. It has the supposedly mad explorer, the suave adventurer, the new kid on the block etc all thrown into this exotic world or wonder and elaborate sets. The promise of some dinosaur action never really comes to fruition and from what you do see it is just some clever camera angles to make real life lizards seem giant rather than your traditional giant. If ever stop motion was desperately needed it is here! There is a quirky kitsch joy to be had here but it wears thin after a while and you do yearn for some proper monster action.

However the joys of this classic 1960's film are in plain sight. The hammy acting, day-glo techni-colour and splendidly OTT orchestral soundtrack all help to make this an enjoyable trip to a land long forgotten.

For more intense drama and action see the films mentioned at the top of this review, otherwise you can enjoy the slim treat The Lost World has to offer.
