Product Description

Product Description

Potent and poetic, mischievous and macabre, Borowczyk s film shows how many imaginative worlds the horror movie can open up when the right artist holds the keys (Nigel Andrews, Financial Times)

It s the engagement party for brilliant young Dr Henry Jekyll (Udo Kier) and his fiancée, the beautiful Fanny Osbourne (Marina Pierro), attended by various pillars of Victorian society, including the astonishing Patrick Magee in one of his final roles. But when people are found raped and murdered outside and ultimately inside the house, it becomes clear that a madman has broken in to disrupt the festivities but who is he? And why does Dr Jekyll keep sneaking off to his laboratory?

We know the answer, of course, but Walerian Borowczyk s visually stunning adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson s much-filmed tale is crammed with wildly imaginative and outrageously perverse touches characteristic of the man who scandalised audiences with Immoral Tales and The Beast, not least the explicitly sexualised nature of Mr Hyde s primal urges.

As the previous reviewer has said, it's really surprising that there has not been a deluge of positive reviews for this title. It surely is one of the DVD / BR releases of the year (and to genre fans, possibly THE release of the year).
Sexy, horrific and very, very wild, this is Borowczyk at his delirious best; and presented fully uncut, has some positively jaw-dropping moments. A gorgeous quality print, enhancing Boro's surreal cinematography and sex-drenched mise-en-scene, fascinating extras and an informative booklet make this a must-have for any fan of horror, perverse erotica or arthouse cinema. Keep your VHS tape of "The Bloodbath Of Dr Jekyll" for nostalgia and the beautiful packaging .. but I guarantee you'll never want to watch it again.
Favourite scene: involves a sewing machine. I'll say no more!
One to watch back-to-back (or even on your back) with Boro's The Beast.
But it's not one for your maiden aunt - don't say you weren't warned.
    Well done Arrow!

Surprised that nobody has reviewed this yet. Horror, Arthouse and Borowczyk fans would never have thought that a release of this film would've happened at all (its been caught up in rights hell since the late 80s), so the fact that it is also a blinding HD print with great extras only adds to the importance of this lovely Arrow Academy edition.
This is my favourite Jekyll adaptation, and also in my top 3 Borowczyk films (Alongside Blanche and La Bete). Basically if you like out there cinema, then this is a must buy. You may now confidently retire those cut VTC VHS tapes!
    Amazing.

I have a bit of history with Dr Jeykll. I went to see this at the ICA in 1985 after a review suggested it was v. v. rude. I came out bemused. Was it supposed to be funny? Was it so bad it was good? Was it just good? Many years later I found an ex-rental VHS copy (Bloodbath, in one those big old cases!) at a car boot sale. This time the film got under my skin as I realised the director was doing something rather extraordinary. I could see it had been made by someone with a really original vision. I began hunting down Boro’s other films (no simple task at the time) and came to adopt him as my personal “obscure” favourite. Still my opinion of Jekyll was unresolved.
So lets look at this Arrow release. True to form it is a treasure trove for Borowczyk fans with treats galore in the plentiful extras. My favourites are Marina Pierro's eloquent and impassioned defence of the director and her short film homage to him. But what about the feature? I would love to say that the improved picture quality and loving presentation have revealed a masterpiece (and they do certainly reveal many fascinating details in the photography) but it must remain a troubling enigma. It is amazing that the director has deliberately set out to make a film about a killer loose in house which has no tension, no shocks, no terror. His interests are elsewhere and it makes for a unsettling viewing experience. The performances veer wildly from Udo Keirs criminally under played Jeykll (he is another of my favourites and is wasted here) to Patrick Magee's jaw-dropping turn that threatens to tip the whole enterprise into farce. Only Pierro really shines, often literally thanks to the glowing lighting. Fatally much of the film is plain dull and you find yourself not bothering to listen to much of the dialogue.

I first share of Walerian Borowczyk came with Le Bete as i'm a shameless controversy hound when i want to be. These expectations of course led me to dismiss it as over-hyped arthouse nonsense and ignore the intense precision and detail of the work at hand. Thankfully, by giving his work a second chance with Dr Jekyll and Miss Osbourne, i was able to grasp Borowczyk's unique sensibilities by the horns and see a fiery, inventive and wildly charismatic mind at play, deconstructing and re-inventing the tired told novella, brining the text the closest imaginable to the author's original, drug driven vision.

The cast and plot is here and there i must say though. This is a stubbornly unbalanced film. Where we get one of Patrick Magee's finest, we get one of Kier's flattest. Where we have motion theory to practise that is decades ahead of its time, we also get adolescent shock tactics that bring down what is on the whole an astoundingly revolutionary film. Those with a keen interest in animation, film and/or it's relationship take note of this man's work. Borowczyk took, when he could, to motion pictures the precision of an animator whilst somehow not sacrificing the fluidity and unique tempo of live motion imagery. Comic and Graphic Novel adaptors can learn a lot from him.

A spectacular release as is the norm now by Arrow. Extras galore and a true sense of admiration for Borowczyk comes shining through and such as in my case, has one sitting converting an adamant hater into a true believer of this man's genius. Don't miss it!

Not one of Borowczyk's best but still an elegant interpretation of the classic story. It looks great though hampered by some mediocre dubbing. Ironically, the one original voice - Patrick Magee - hams it up throughout.
