SIX MODELS. SIX VICTIMS FOR A CRAZED MASKED KILLER.

The Cristiana Haute Couture fashion house is a home to models... and backstabbing... and blackmail... and drug deals... and MURDER.

Having established a template for the giallo with The Girl Who Knew Too Much, Mario Bava set about cementing its rules with Blood and Black Lace. In doing so he created one of the most influential films ever made an Italian classic that would spearhead the giallo genre, provide a prototype for the slasher movie, and have a huge effect on filmmakers as diverse as Dario Argento and Martin Scorsese.

Newly restored from the original camera negative and presented here in its original, uncut Italian form, this dual-format release allows fans to see Blood and Black Lace afresh and offers newcomers the ideal introduction to a major piece of cult filmmaking.

SPECIAL EDITION CONTENTS:

  • New 2K restoration of the film from the original camera negative
  • High Definition Blu-ray (1080p) and Standard Definition DVD presentations
  • Optional Italian and English soundtracks presented in original uncompressed mono PCM audio

  • From Amazon.co.uk

This delirious mix of sex, sadism and style has a masked man stalking the gorgeous mannequins of a Roman high fashion house, murdering them in a strikingly fetishist manner and then leaving the corpses to be discovered like grisly works of art. Mario Bava's 1964 film, originally titled Sei donne per l'assassino, is one of the earliest slasher movies, and remains a suspenseful, disturbing and oddly seductive film.

The complex, lurid plot features blackmail, murder for profit, drug addiction and scandal among the beautiful people. Smooth Cameron Mitchell and lovely Eva Bartok are the conspirators, pursued by a plodding Columbo-style detective. However, Bava goes beyond the world of Agatha Christie or Edgar Wallace to embrace the surreal and the nightmarish. Each murder is handled like a musical number, with elaborate camera moves, striking colour effects and a strangely memorable jazz score. There is certainly more than a tinge of misogyny in the treatment of actresses as disposable dummies, but the plot is equally cynical about its grasping, feeble, suspicious male characters. This welcome video release--more complete than any previous UK edition--is letterboxed to show off the cinematography and, most importantly, preserves Bava's astonishingly rich colour effects. --Kim Newman --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Arrow wins for giallo Blu-ray / DVD of the year! I have bought at least four versions of this film, with the finest of the DVD versions being the German one (Blutige seide). This easily surpasses them all, due to meticulous sound and image restoration. It is almost like seeing a new film, because images hidden in the murk before become clear, while at the same time the brighter, sharper picture does not take away from the magic of the film. One Blu-ray and two DVD discs are included, along with a great booklet with essays and a review (of the included film Yellow). I've not gone through all the extras yet, but a short "neo-giallo" film is included, Yellow, as well as interviews, a panel discussion, a documentary, and a new commentary by Tim Lucas. All giallo fans and Bava fans must have this! It is a work of art. All that remains now is for Kill,Baby,Kill to be remastered.

At long last an oppurtunity to appreciate Mario Bava's masterpiece in it's complete unexpurgated format. For years the only version of this classic giallo or thriller has been a toned down American market orientated print - now at long last it is there to be enjoyed for the gruesome masterpiece that it is.
Bava, a maestro for simple visuals and effects designed to sock and surprise his audience set the pre-cursor with Blood and Black Lace - which later was to influence Dario Argento, and across the pond Martin Scorcese, Tim Burton and Brian De Palma. At long last Bava, 20 years after his death, is being appreciated, for his talent. Hopefully more of his works will become available to a wider audience to be enjoyed.

This one will be short: if you read this, it is likely that you have seen B&BL several times, and that you view Mario Bava as a "grand maître" of world cinema.
But if you read this, it is also likely that you have always found available copies frustrating. Well, friends, fear not: Arrow, Tim Lucas and all that lot have produced an absolutely FANTASTIC transfer of this masterpiece. The sharpness, the colors, down to the skin problems of some actors - it is all there. The foggy quality of the piece at times is also well-rendered - although it is the first time I have noticed the small cut that makes the killer disappear in the antique shop (Nicole's murder). This is a drawback of having such a clear copy.
But - to give you an idea: the last time I felt like that in front of a BluRay transfer was when Lionsgate released the original Dracula with Christopher Lee. This transfer of B&BL is THAT good.
Extras: a lot of them and overall a good and eclectic effort, but not perfect.
For example, it is great to have the short film "Giallo" directed by Ryan Haysom & Jon Britt, a tribute to the genre even if far from ideal, due to a screenplay that tries to be too smart for its own good.
The new documentary on B&BL, "Psycho", is a bit too intellectual but will be revered for the interviews of Dario Argento and Lamberto Bava. Those two icons of Italian cinema are more present in the panel discussion organised at the cinema festival of Courmayeur.
The two best extras though are first the complete version of David Del Valle's "Sinister Image" show featuring Cameron Mitchell. This is a really good career interview - but the peak is reached with the phenomenal "Giallo and Gender", literally a PhD lecture on the relationship between genre and gender.

Just to confirm that I agree with all the 5 star reviews. Superb restoration /audio.Magnificent extras. I just wonder why, if this can be done to a 1964 cult film which I imagine has a niche market, the studios let the public down badly with awful transfers of more modern, mainstream films? Is it all to do with profit margins or is it the quality of the original film stock /uncaring attitude?

This is a stylish, thrilling film from the great Mario Bava. What makes it even better is Arrow Films wonderfully restored Blu Ray edition. The colouring is fantastic, deep shadows and pastel like colour, really bring this film to life.

The plot is a thriller with nods to Hitchcock. A psycho killer is on the loose taking out models from a fashion studio one by one. Its quite visceral in its killings (for the time) and adult themes are not covered up by censors as you would expect in a American made film (again of the time). The 'giallo' style, invented by Bava, is on full display here.

A highly entertaining films, great acting, amazing photography and direction. Now with Arrows remastered Blu Ray this is a must for any film fans collection.

A bizarre giallo/thriller by Bava. And one of his best films. A unique and explosive use of colors, scenography, camera moves, that create an unreal atmosphere. It's like an obscure, macabre dream. In a way, even funny.

Classic. Has all what you would expect for an Italian Horror (Giallo) movie from the 1960's - Sex, Gore, Murders, Colours, Style, Soundtrack, Fashion but not too over the top as they became in the 1970's. Claude Dantes steals the visual imagery for me, and it's only a small part (in a short film career). There are plenty of other good visuals of course

From the Hitchcock school of, not letting the acting get in the way of the story or look of the film. Bava uses colour as they did black and white in the horror movies of the 1930's.
