Product Description

When Sergio Leone turned Lee Van Cleef into a major star with For a Few Dollars More and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, the actor sensibly stayed in Italy to make several more spaghetti westerns, including this one from Leone s former assistant Tonino Valerii that genre aficionados rank amongst the best ever made.

Giuliano Gemma plays street cleaner Scott Mary, relentlessly bullied by the people of the small town of Clifton. When legendarily ruthless master gunfighter Frank Talby (Van Cleef) rides into town, Scott seizes the opportunity to lift himself out of the gutter, and possibly even surpass Talby s own skills. But what is Talby doing in Clifton in the first place?

This lively, intelligent western, notable for the chemistry between its charismatic leads, some memorable action set-pieces (including a rifle duel on horseback that has to be seen to be believed), and a jazzy Riz Ortolani score, is presented here in an exclusive high-definition restoration from the original Techniscope negative.

A year after playing “The Bad” in Sergio Leone’s 1966 masterpiece, Lee Van Cleef brought his sly antihero brooding to Tonino Valerii’s Day of Anger (AKA I giorni dell'ira, AKA Gunlaw). It’s a Spaghetti Western, so it’s an Italian production with mostly Italian actors, although given the general limitations of shooting movies on location at the time, the dubbing doesn’t seem so incongruent.

This Blu-ray disc includes the original 114-minute Italian cut and an 86-minute international cut. The latter is basically coherent although there are moments of garden shears editing that disrupt the flow and make a mockery of the music, so best to steer clear of this. Italian or English dialogue (and subtitles, natch) are available for both versions.

Giuliano Gemma plays Scott Mary, a bullied young street-sweeper whose life is changed when an avuncular gunslinger named Talby (Lee Van Cleef) swaggers into town. Scott becomes Talby’s protégé, and together they wipe out the local Wild Jack Gang. But once they’ve ascended to power, their personal rivalry threatens their father-son/mentor-student relationship. Who’ll shoot first?

It’s a pretty contrived setup, but Scott’s transformation from victimhood to cocky arrogance is convincingly and movingly portrayed, and the dynamic between the boy and the daddy figure is unusually warm and well-observed. The political manoeuvrings of the townfolk are engrossingly intricate. For all his superficial references – gaudy credits and gunshot editing – Tarantino would do well to remember that these movies took themselves seriously.

No more serious than Sergio Corbucci’s The Great Silence (Il grande silenzio), but the vibe here is far less doomy and chilly.

Day of Anger is was a damn good western with more focus than usual on the writing and characters, and more briskly paced than some of the Sergio Leone classics. The film is about an aging gunslinger (Lee Van Cleef) taking on as an apperentice (Giuliano Gemma), a social outcast youth shunned by the people around him and made to do menial tasks. The youth reveres his new mentor and uses his new skills to make a more respected place for himself, but realizes that his teacher is essentially using him (and others) to take over the town as his own stronghold. How the youth deals with his dilemma and what happens next between him and his mentor forms the rest of the story. Strong performances from Lee Van Cleef and Giuliano Gemma (although Gemma is noticeably older than the character should be), and the shootouts are good too. Director Tonino Valeri used to assist Sergio Leone and he proves more than competent in this feature. The score by Riz Ortolani stands nicely alongside Ennio Morricone standards.

Arrow blu gives a strong visual presentation, although there are scenes where the film element appears not so robust. The film offers 2 cuts of the movie - longer cut in English & Italian, and a shorter International cut in English only. I watched the longer cut in English and it was a good experience. On-disc extras include separate interviews with the director and the scriptwriter, nice. I also tried out the critic's essay on the disc but I wish it had English subtitles because although the man was speaking English, his accent was so strong it was tough understanding him.

I'm afraid I'm a bit mystified by these reviews. This wasn't a film I was familiar with, but from the reviews and the fact that it had been given a bluray transfer, I had expected some sort of lost classic. I enjoy a good spaghetti western, and Lee Van Cleef personfies the best of its type. Sadly I was pretty underwhelmed. The plot is thin and pretty incoherent. The music isn't in the least memorable. The direction capable but hardly Sergio Leone. The best thing for me was the quality of the bluray transfer, which is excellent.

Amazing western. Great story, excellent Riz Ortolani's soundtrack. I think that "Day of anger" and "Return of Ringo" are Giuliano Gemma's best spaghetti-western . Blu ray video quality is excellent even if the italian track is quite poor. Highly reccommended movie !
