A TRILOGY OF SHOCK AND TERROR!

In his earlier Edgar Allan Poe films, Roger Corman took short stories by the great Gothic master and expanded them into full-length features. Here, by contrast, the stories stay short, the only other thing they have in common being the participation of Vincent Price.

In Morella , Price plays a tormented man forced to confront a dark family secret when his long-estranged daughter tracks him down. In The Black Cat , he s the rakish lover of the wife of Peter Lorre, who naturally plots a deadly revenge. And in the title role of The Facts in the Case of M. Valdemar , he tries to relieve chronic pain by asking Basil Rathbone to hypnotise him, something that leaves poor Valdemar hovering on the border between the dead and the living.

Corman s previous Poe films were played completely straight, and parts of Tales of Terror are as authentically creepy as any of them. But he also stirred comedy into the Poe brew for the first time, particularly in the scenes between Price and Lorre.

Tales of Terror is a trio of Edgar Allen Poe stories, starring three of horror's greats--Vincent Price, Basil Rathbone and Peter Lorre--and produced and directed by the immortal Roger Corman. The first story, "Morella", involves a girl (Debra Paget) who returns to her isolated, spooky family home to see her estranged father (Price) for the first time in 26 years. He's let the housekeeping slide a bit--cobwebs abound and, oh, yes, his dead wife is still upstairs. Peter Lorre joins the fun for "The Black Cat", a piece with comic flavour that allows Price to show his rarely seen silly side, and then it's Basil Rathbone's turn to be creepy in "The Case of M Valdemar", the tale of a mesmerist who decides to experiment with the unknown (bad idea). The movie is well paced, and makes good use of comedy without undercutting its chills. It's a rare treat to see this many masters of the genre working together and so clearly enjoying themselves. --Ali Davis --This text refers to the DVD edition.

The first film is a Roger Corman / Poe classic featuring three tales, all staring Vincent Price and other great veteran actors such as Basil Rathbone and Peter Lorre. The first story here involves a tormented Price who keeps his dead wife upstairs who soon enough returns to life and goes on a rampage! The second story is my personal favourite Corman/Price effort - called The Black Cat. Here the cast from 'The Comedy of Terror' are re-united and Peter Lorre plays (perhaps too believably) a bumbling wineo, who runs into Price at a wine tasting contest. Soon enough Price becomes Lorre's new best friend and is making sure he has plenty of booze money - but only so he can entertain his wife while Lorre is away at the pub all night ! Lorre finds out, returns home and bricks up both Price and his unfaithful wife in the cellar! But what happened to that accursed cat that he so detests?? This story is also very true to the original Poe tale (something of a rarity for many Corman adaptations !). The third tale features Basil Rathbone as a hypnotist, keeping an aged Price under his mesmeric power during his death... And beyond, much to the horror of his next of kin !
The second film I had not seen before and I was a little wary about, as it is not a Corman effort and neither is it based on the works of Poe. However - it complements the first film beautifully and is filled with more macabre short tales. Each short story stars the ever versatile Price and he gives a strong performance in each. In the first tale two aged friends discover an elixir of life - only to find their forgotten rivalry over a dead love is also rejuvenated in the process, with deadly consequences !

This is a great little portmanteau film collecting three classic Edgar Allen Poe stories (with some reworking...), directed by Roger Corman and starring Vincent Price in all three segments with help from Peter Lorre in The Black Cat and Basil Rathbone in The case of Mr. Valdemar.

It's an absolute delight of a film. By using three short stories (Morella, The Black Cat and The Case of Mr. Valdemar), the director gets to set three completely different tones. Morella is a somewhat creepy paranoid suspense piece, Black Cat is played for laughs and Mr. Valdemar is a nice little depiction of the evil in men's hearts combined with a dash of gothic horror.

OK, it's Roger Corman so it was filmed on the (exceedingly) cheap. But the imagination used to wring every drop of blood from the very last cent is impressive, and an entertaining 90 minutes is the result. Apart from Corman's flair there is the talent of the actors. Price is particularly impressive, playing three totally different characters believably. Of particular note is his comic turn in the Black Cat segment - he conveys so much with just an arch look and a raised eyebrow! Lorre and Rathbone acquit themselves well, the latter coming across as a truly evil and nasty piece of work without having to ham it up too much.

It's a classic Corman horror film -not horror by today's standards, but engrossing, witty and well made. I love it, and seeing it 20 years ago started what has, for me, been a life long love of Corman and Price's collaborations.

The DVD is OK, with an all right widescreen format. The picture and sound are fine, though it is clear neither have been restored. There are a few jumps and scratches, but you have to be looking for them. The only extra is the trailer.

It's a decent release of a really good film, so 4 stars.

The fourth venture into Poe adaptations for Roger Corman and Vincent Price sees them taking on the portmanteau format with a trilogy of creepers.

First off is Morella, which finds Price as a typecast loner living in a big old mansion with the dead corpse of his wife! Enter his daughter, who at birth was the reason for Morella’s death and thus Price originally holds a grudge, but of course there is a twist in the tale.

Secondly is The Black Cat, with Peter Lorre joining Price in the best of the three tales. Price is a wine tasting dandy, Lorre a complete drunk and once Price meets Lorre’s beautiful put upon wife, things are going to end badly.

Finally is The Case of M Valdemar which pits Basil Rathbone into the mix as a devious hypnotist who uses his powers for what he thinks will be sexually tinged deeds. Price is in this as well, but spends most of the story as a corpse.

It’s a short sharp shock piece of film making, fun and sometimes stylish, it doesn’t however have the requisite scares to marry up with the welcome black humour that makes the second instalment the standout.

Still, having three legends of cinema in one picture has to be a bonus, and The Black Cat alone is worth investing time with this one. 7/10
