Product Description

From acclaimed director Ridley Scott (Gladiator, Prometheus) comes the epic adventure EXODUS: GODS AND KINGS, the story of one man’s daring courage to take on the might of an empire. Using state of the art visual effects and 3D immersion, Scott brings new life to the story of the defiant leader Moses (Christian Bale) as he rises up against the Egyptian Pharaoh Ramses (Joel Edgerton), setting 400,000 slaves on a monumental journey of escape from Egypt and its terrifying cycle of deadly plagues.

I didn't hate this film but I didn't overly enjoy it either. My main motivation was Ridley Scott having a good track record with such films and the potentially big scope epic sequences shot with stunning cinematography, but the film was a little disappointing on both fronts.

Overall I did enjoy the film in parts but wouldn't ever feel inclined to watch it again or particularity recommend it and believe that if you're looking for big action sequences you will be disappointed, if you're looking for a faithful telling of various biblical events you will be disappointed and if you're looking for great acting from an actor you've previously enjoyed you'll also be disappointed.

Ignoring the accents, acting, and constant fade-to-black treatment that made many scenes difficult to take in, the film does a reasonable/OK job at portraying some of the internal and external challenges both Moses & Rameses faced and also does a good job in my opinion of reflecting the relationship between them. Beliefs and faith are questioned from different view points and morals and values are framed as the predicaments and struggles that they sometimes are in life, so it's easy to associate your own ideas and beliefs in the modern age into the historic aspects of the film, regardless of if you are religious or not. But the film's pacing isn't great, none of the characters are particularly likable and I did find myself waiting for the action sequences to fill the gaps but unfortunately the bulk of this is all crammed into a short section towards the end. It's a shame as some of the bigger more expansive sequences are very nicely shot and bring some needed weight to the film.

"Exodus: Gods and Kings" by Ridley Scott is a dramatic and entertaining re-envisaging of the story of Moses, and Christian Bale does a reasonable job playing Moses as a man of action - a prince and general turned rebel leader rather than an elderly patriarch. If you want to watch a modern Hollywood version of the Book of Exodus, purely for entertainment value, you will probably like this.

The action is well paced and exciting, the visual depiction of the magnificence of ancient Egypt is sumptuous. The battle and action scenes are well drawn - the depiction of the battle of Kadesh in particular - and the special effects are magnificent. Most of the acting is very good though one or two of the accents used were surprising: for example the High Priestess of Egypt (Indira Varma) has a cut glass English accent and a character who appears in the cast list as "expert" (Ewen Bremner) made no attempt to modify his Scottish one. And some characters in the story were given blatantly 21st century attitudes - for example the Scottish "expert" produces a secular explanation for the plagues. That explanation is quite close to what some modern scientists who think this section of the bible might be based on a real event have theorised, but sounded out of place in Egypt in the 13th century BC.

If you were hoping to see either a film which reflects the viewpoint of a religious believer or that of of someone who is interested in a rationalist view of what might have actually happened with minimal supernatural involvement, you may feel that this film falls between those two stools. I also felt that the film was cut down a bit too much, apparently to fit into an arbitrary time limit, and some of the "deleted scenes" on the disc would have been better left in.

Having endured the attention seeking nonsense that was Noah earlier in 2014 I had low expectations for Exodus, particularly as I expected Bale and Scott to potentially have their own agenda when working with the subject matter.

So I was very pleasantly surprised to see that not only had they resisted in making any anti-Christian statements but that they'd avoided the trap that Noah so badly fell into of turning an already epic story into some kind of generic Hollywood action movie (complete with the obligatory final fight scene and other such nonsense).

Instead we get the Bible story told remarkably close to the text, with some of the blanks filled in with imagination and flair.

Yes there are departures from the exact story, but compared to Noah these are pretty respectful and acceptable, especially in 2014 for a non-Christian film.

For those worried about the much-hyped portrayal of God as a young 'brat', I think this is in the most part a misunderstanding of what Scott was trying to do here. Yes, God is shown to 'appear' to Moses as a young child, but is it mere coincidence that the child is of roughly the same age as Moses's son at the time? It can be argued that, in Scott's depiction, God merely appears to Moses in a form he knows he will relate to.

Other things I've seen hurled at this film by people who haven't seen it is the idea that Scott explains the plagues away as 'natural phenomenon'. This isn't the case. While he gives them added believability through clever theories as to how they might have happened, he always makes it abundantly clear (as with the parting of the Red Sea) that these are divine acts.

Indeed, the intellectual/scientist character who does try to explain the plagues away is portrayed as a bit of a fool.
