ONE BECOMES ACCUSTOMED TO THE DARKNESS...

Although recognised as part of Roger Corman s Edgar Allan Poe cycle (its title comes from a Poe poem), The Haunted Palace has a much more significant place in film history for being the first high-profile adaptation of the work of H.P. Lovecraft, in this case his novella The Case of Charles Dexter Ward.

Ward is one of two characters played by Vincent Price, the other being Ward s great-great-grandfather Joseph Curwen, burned as a warlock 110 years before. When Ward returns to the village of Arkham to reclaim the family mansion, his striking resemblance to his ancestor is just the first of many macabre events that proceed to unfold, including the screen debut of Lovecraft s legendary Necronomicon.

As before, Corman and his team worked wonders with their modest budget, with Daniel Haller s sets amongst the most elaborate in all the Poe cycle, enhanced by genuinely creepy moments such as the crowd of deformed villagers still living under Curwen s curse.

This is a super buy since you get two films from the Horror team of Vincent Price and Roger Corman.
King of the Quickies, Roger Corman and Price made a good stab working their way through the stories and poems of Edgar Allan Poe, making one film right after another based on horror tales. Near the end, they tossed in one loosely based on H.P. Lovecraft's short story "The Case of Charles Dexter Ward".
Price plays the lead in duo as Charles Dexter Ward his is distant relative, Joseph Curwen, a warlock.
The movie opens, in a small misty shrouded town with a girl going to the castle of Curwen. She is followed there by the villagers, but Curwen claims she came to visit of her own free will. However, the girl can only answer in barest of replies, so they know she is under Curwen's bewitchment. The village drag Curwen out into the night and kill him.
It moves to over 100 years later, when Charles Dexter Ward and his beautiful bridge come to claim the estate as his inheritance. They find the village strange, almost to the point of being hostile, and are oddly chilled when they see so many of the children are deformed. They learn from a kindly doctor there, the villager are cursed because of Curwen - who just happened to be the spitting image of Ward. Not there long at the Castle, when Ward suddenly begins to act funny. Could it be?
A wonderful performance by one of the most beautiful women to ever grace the screen, Debra Pagent, with the great character actors, Leo Gordon, Elisha Cook and Lon Chaney, Jr., this is very low toned horror film that really needs a second - and third - look.

The second film in the nice double feature is The Tower of London, another flick that teamed Price with director Roger Corman.

BUYERS BEWARE, Amazon have done there usual trick of lumping all reviews together from other releases of this film together, the first few reviews I have read refer to the Midnite Movies double release of this film along with Tower of London. That is a region 1 locked DVD
THIS is the newly restored and for the first time official UK released version on BluRay of HAUNTED PALACE available. I think I'm right in saying the only other version available in this country was on DVD in the Roger Corman Collection 6 film pack by Studio Canal. I personally have been waiting years for this film to be released on its own merit in the UK well done to Arrow Video. (just as an aside come on people bring out Tower of London aswell as that film HAS never been released on any format in the UK)

Rather fine, and I think a little forgotten, Roger Corman movie with Vincent Price. The film looks really crisp and lush, and Corman knew how to stretch the dollars to keep the film looking classy, but kept it cheap by running the smoke machines for every single exterior shot. Price isn't too hammy here, and gives a fine performance. What is funny is that Corman is trying to sell this as being an Edgar Allen Poe-based movie when it's clearly an H.P.Lovecraft story. There's mentions of the elder gods, Yog-Sothoth, and some very fine imagery going on here, with a story of a wizard burned for mating young girls with beasts from the other dimensions, cursing the whole village to horrible mutations, and then resurrected into his own ancestor. Enjoyable shennanegins.

Essentially, the script for "The Haunted Palace" is an adaptation of an H P Lovecraft story entitled, "The Case Of Charles Dexter Ward", with several Edgar Alan Poe quotations added in for good measure. As always, Vincent Price gives an impeccable performance as Ward......another sinister role which pleasingly compliments the one he gave in "The Pit And The Pendulum" in which the main character becomes similarly possessed by the spirit of a deceased member of his own family tree......the subtle changes in personality and appearance of both, all being performed and delivered with the pure brilliance of his own acting ability and technique alone. Ah, yes...this was during a period when great theatrical acting talent could thankfully be fixed and preserved for all time amid the chronicals of true cinematic art.

This is certainly the best, and sharpest colour print of the film I've seen in a long time, and all in the original full widescreen-format too! Well worth the whole 'price' of the double feature disc just by itself. Plus, you get an excellent extra in the form of another fascinating interview with the hypnotically charming, cult sixties film director himself, Roger Corman......a real bargain all round!

We start off with a warlock Joseph Curwen being burnt alive for dabbling in the evil book the Necromonicon and using his powers to enslave the minds of the people of Arkham. He dies, but not before he places a curse on those responsible for his demise, and their descendants.
We then travel forward more than a hundred years, as Curwen's great granson Charles Dexter Ward arrives in Arkham to claim his inheritance, the house where Curwen lived. Ward is accompanied by his wife Ann.
They are made to feel very unwelcome by the townspeople, especially the descendants of those who killed Curwen, who seeing a startling resemblance between Ward and his evil anscestor. When they finally arrive at the palacial house, Ward begins to act out of character, and starts dissapearing for long periods of time. Elsewhere, the descendants of those responsible for Curwen's death start to die horribly. Does the malign influence of Joseph Curwen still linger on in the sinister house?
This is an admirable attempt to bring the H.P Lovecraft story "The Strange Case of Charles Dexter Ward" to the screen. It really envokes an atmosphere of menace, especially when Curwen takes possesion of Ward's body to carry out his terrible revenge. The mist shrouded streets of Arkham provide a suitable menacing backdrop for the unfolding events.
Often disingenuously marketed as one of the Corman directed Edgar Aleen Poe adaptations, it is in fact the equal to any of those, and is helped no end by having such a great cast. Price is better when playing the evil Curzon than the rather ineffectual Ward, Lon Chaney gets a decent, meaty role as Curzon's loyal servant Simon, and the hostile townspeople are played by the likes of Leo Gordon, Elisha Cook Jr and Frank Maxwell, excellent character actors all.
