When Mr Gau,a minister with the new government discovers his superiors links with the Japanese he decides to steal some papers exposing their devious plan. His actions put his life at great risk,so he decides to employ the use of the Shanghai 13 to assist him as he tries to escape and expose his enemies. The problem is that some of the 13 have sold out and are working for the other side causing increasingly brutal and bloody battles! What this film lacks in plot and characterisation it more than makes up for with increasingly spectacular fight scenes. In 1984 when the film was made legendary director Chang Cheh was 60 and made this to try and fund his retirement. His former Shaw Brothers colleagues give their all to make this a memorable action showcase. The end battle with Ti Lung is exceptional and is guaranteed to have you on the edge of your seat! Thanks for reading and I hope that you enjoy the film.

Excellent later film from Ex- renowned Shaw Brothers Director Chang Cheh, which features a plethora of martial arts stars that worked for him in various SB films from the 60's and 70's. Jimmy Wang Yu,Ti Lung, Beardy, David Chiang to name but a few. The movie is pretty much broken down into individual segments where each actor gets to showcase his own fight skills with the baddies. The loose narrative only really serving as a wraparound to get to the next fight. The Beardy fight in particular is incredible and worth the price alone !

Terracotta's Picture quality is in widescreen and in excellent quality - with the choice of Eng Dub or Chinese language with Subs. There are also a couple of small interviews incuded as extras.

Fantastic ensemble cast put together by the genre's best loved director.
Once it gets going the action is non-stop and this package includes original language with English subs plus English dub and interviews by
some cast members.

A Chinese patriot who holds some secret patriotic paperwork is trying to escape from Japanese sympathisers, who intend to help their evil bosses rape the culture and heritage of China...or something.
And it turns out that the bad toads will stop at nothing in order to get their rascally hands on those documents.
Fortunately the patriot has some hard mates, and mates of mates, who are passionate about his cause; and thus he is smuggled from one location to the next, whilst his transgressors follow in hot pursuit, attacking anyone who hides him...

This is an odd one really, and I got the feeling it was more of a showcase than an actual movie. Almost like an exercise in showing off a few older Shaw Brothers stars in cameos, rather than delivering a film for a film's sake.
Don't get me wrong, the film is action packed from about the 20m mark onward, but there's no real story arc, or character or plot development after that really, as it just follows a series of bloody kung fu set pieces. Which I am sure will make no difference to many fans of the genre.
There's some great old school faces wheeled out in this for a bit of a kung fu work-out, quite often playing the heroes, but their limited screen time never leaves any lasting impression and by the end it's difficult to tell what's actually going on, as the story either gets lost in translation or the writer/director Chang Cheh never cared much in the first place.

Terracotta have done another really good job with this UK release, giving us a good picture and an option of English dub or sub. There's a few extras too, with a couple of interviews! Good release and I hope Terracotta do more, but I wonder if there's a big enough UK fan base to warrant these re-masterings?

I don't really enjoy 'modern day' Kung fu movies that much, so was a bit dubious about this one. Set in 30's Shanghai (but looking suspiciously like early 80's Shanghai) this is an action packed delight! It's a Shaw bros film that isn't a shaw bros film! A stable of stars have a seemingly endless showcase of their talents one after the other! You will not be disappointed! 23.5 widescreen with Eng audio (no Chinese soundtrack, shame) this is another winner from Terracotta!

This is a typical early kung fu flick from Terracotta. In short, its brilliant although a young Andy Lau only turns up for a couple of fights in the last half of the film.Still, its well worth a watch! If you like these types of films then you will love "Shanghai 13", and if not then you probably won't.What else can I say?
