I am a massive fan of AHS and whilst Murder House will always be my favourite season this comes a very close second!
One of the things I love most about AHS in general is how as the series progresses you just accept the weirdness as the norm and you grow to care about the characters, which is certainly the case with Freakshow. This is a far better season than Coven and has links to Asylum (and some events mirror those that happened in Murder House imo).
I would recommend this season to old and new fans alike -it's dark, it's funny, it's even touching in some places. A definite must have!

I have eagerly been waiting for this next installment in the American Horror Story franchise and I wasn't totally disappointed. I still love that they use the same group of actors in different roles and the fact that they had real live "Freaks" added an authentic air to it. The set was incredible and the lighting and staging brilliant. I have made it lose one star because some of the episodes dragged a little bit and I did fast forward through quite a bit. I love the character played by Neil Patrick Harris, I only wish he was in more of the episodes. I would recommend adding it to your collection as it is worth it, but it is probably one I won't watch for a while.

I really enjoyed this season...for the most part. True, it was rather messy, with many plot holes and some characters weren't developed enough for my taste BUT it was creepy/scary in parts. The writing wasn't bad, but could've been better at times. The last season, Coven failed to deliver on the horror front for me. It was quirky and humours with gruesome scenes splashed here and there. But that was basically it. Freak Show returned to it's dark roots. One character in particular really made this season stand out for me, Dandy Mott! Played magnificently by newcomer Finn Wittrock. Jessica Lange was decent enough. I didn't care for her singing or her uneven German accent, but she's never bad. I doubt the show will ever top season two's, Asylum. But, for me, Freak Show delivered where it counts.

This is my favourite series of American Horror story to date,Jessica lange is magnetic as "Elsa" the washed up freak show owner,in the autumn of her life , still dreaming of becoming a star.The "freaks" are a family,however evil is around every corner,they must stay together before lives are lost,and sequins covered in blood.

I am a big fan of AHS and was not disappointed in season 4. It was creepy, compelling, sad and funny. Like another reviewer I was impressed and glad that they used real "freaks" which added to the pathos when shown how "normal" people reacted to them and that the so called "normals" were in many cases even bigger and nastier "freaks". I can't wait for season 5 Hotel. Hope Jessica Lange is in it as she gives stand out performances. Also Sarah Paulson is superb and amazing in the role of the 2-headed twins. I've been a fan of hers since American Gothic and am enjoying her current role in the OJ Simpson tv show on BBC 2. Overall loved AHS season 4; looking forward to season 5 and beyond. Long may it continue.

Another good season of American Horror Story. Like the others, it can be watched independently (the seasons don't connect). Each season is distinct, with its own storyline, although each makes use of many of the same actors (playing different roles).

This season focusses on a 1950's "freak show" located in small town America. The "freaks" are normal people (with physical deformities), who live a circus-type lifestyle. Where they set up camp, the locals come to visit. On the occasion that this show arrives at a particular town, there are a series of murders - and the "freaks" are blamed. The story progresses from this premise ...

The "freaks" of the show are not the real monsters.

This season involved some great thrills, and good story-telling. I enjoyed it more than season three (which focussed on contemporary witches). The only criticism I have of this season, and AHS generally, is that the 'horror' aspect of the series is minor. Yes, there's chills and drama, but little actual horror. Might be better called American Chiller Story ...

But that's really besides the point. It's a great TV series.

American Horror Story joins that special elite-club of TV shows with its fourth season, 'Freakshow' - almost a surprise if you consider how hit-and-miss, despite having great ideas, the previous three series were. This time round, it's tight, concise, and very very well written - perfection. In fact, a television-show hasn't been this dark and edgy, and clever, for a long time. The story features around the 'misfits' of society, and how they are deployed for entertainment in a circus-show, and its depiction of a world that discards those who are different and don't fit the 'pattern' is deadly acute and serious. Bursting with ideas and creativity, every single episode is loaded with themes and complexed observations - and there's momentum, actual progression, at every corner. There are moments that terrify you, and moments that move you deeply. This is a show that demands mature emotional engagement and intellectual reading - as opposed to just lounging back and watching popcorn-fodder. The ending is fantastic also. There's nothing left to say other than to take your seat and enjoy - the show is about to begin....
