Product Description

Product Description

Starring Bob Monkhouse, Alfred Marks, Hattie Jacques and many key comedy supporting actors from the 1960s, She ll Have to Go is a stylish, hugely enjoyable farce co-produced by BAFTA-nominated Hammer Films stalwart Jack Asher. Released in the US as Maid for Murder, it is presented here in a brand-new transfer from the original film elements, in its as-exhibited theatrical aspect ratio.

When Francis and Douglas Oberon learn that their late grandmother has bequeathed the family fortune to distant cousin Toni, they immediately start plotting to get their hands on the money. They dream up a plot whereby they cannot fail to acquire a comfortable future; the lovely Toni must either be murdered, or married...

I have to admit, I only really bought this because Anna Karina is in it, but I was very pleasantly surprised with the film as a whole, it's a lot funnier than I expected it to be - the DVD cover makes it look like some naughty seaside postcard affair, but given that the plot revolves around various attempts at murder, it is in fact a deliciously black comedy. Alfred Marks and Bob Monkhouse are the stars, along with the delightful Anna Karina (who does look gorgeous), but there is also strong support from the likes of Hattie Jacques, Hugh Lloyd, Graham Stark, Peter Butterworth and Clive Dunn in smaller roles. The picture quality is excellent too, very sharp.

I loved this film. Starring Bob Monkhouse and Alfred Marks they play two brothers who on hearing that a distant rather glamorous cousin has inherited the house they live in plot to murder her. A young Hattie Jacques plays a local reporter who comes to her aid and Denis Lotus the butler who falls in love with her. There's never a dull moment in this very funny escapade as we go through all the methods they employ to kill her. A very good buy.

Its a bit dated to be honest but on wet evening and nothing on the TV to entertain, it gave us a chuckle or two. One point is that nowadays it seems to 'enhance' the box cover illustration, there seems to be a tendency to include an image of the female form clad in stocking and suspenders but in reality no such scene is in the film - unless I blinked of course...

Bought out of curiosity, I'm afraid I found it extremely tedious and laboured. However, it might have some appeal to fans of Bob Monkhouse, Alfred Marks, Hattie Jacques, Anna Karina and the period. Most of the posted reviews, it seems to me, are excessively indulgent to what is really, in all honesty, a very lame, forgettable effort.
Karina is appealing in the Bardot role of imported continental sauciness. There are very sixties leering shots of her wiggling posterior, they waste no time getting her down to her underwear and even going of for an (extreme long shot) skinny dip. They attempt to enliven the flat, predictable script with some poor attempts at slap-stick, ladled over with 'comedy' music to convice you that it's funny.
However, on the plus side, the print is very good, it comes with a trailer and has reversable artwork on the cover.
Poor effort. You really must learn to to apply yourself and try much harder.

Even a strong cast cannot save this poor comedy, they do in fact seem to be trying too hard to save it, based on a stage play, I suspect that it worked better in that medium. Worth a viewing as a curiosity but not as a comedy.
