SAMCRO Sons of Anarchy Motorcycle Club, Redwood Original

Season 7 of Sons of Anarchy has 13 episodes and I have just come away from seeing the last episode. As season 7 goes there is a lot of violence and I am sure there will be detractors who claim there is just too much. I really do not want to get into that discussion. My review, I hope, is really aimed at the fans. Like many fans of SAMCRO it's been a really been a powerful and at times painful journey. Some may even be calling it Shakespearean, as many seem to equate the series to Hamlet. Jax = Hamlet, Tara = Ophelia, Gemma = Gertrude, Clay = Claudius, etc. etc. Then of course there is the religious symbolism especially in the last episode - and to be frank I am still trying to get my head around it. The last episode, for me anyway has so much crammed into it - and is so emotionally driven, I will need to repeat view it at least a couple times - and I'm sure I still will not fathom it all.

-------------"A Good father and a good outlaw can't settle inside the same man"---------------

I was gutted when key characters passed away, in a way you could see the writing on the wall as the consequences of certain peoples actions and their lies just drove the narrative in one direction and ultimately to a certain ending. Kurt Sutter (show creator) has hinted that there are discussions about a prequel based on the origins of SAMCRO in the 1960s; let's hope that that pans out. The season has some good and surprising guest appearances, Marilyn Manson as a drug addict who is a high-ranking member of a neo-Nazi prison sect - is especially spooky. There are a couple of others but I really do not want to give spoilers.

I had hoped that Sons of Anarchy would get better as it progressed, but it wasn't to be. It's watchable and entertaining to a certain degree, but by the time I started watching the final series, it had passed its peak.

Decent story lines are neglected in favour of more and more violence. Every other scene seems to consist of people getting killed in large numbers, and often for no particular reason apart from creating the need to go and kill some more people. The authorities don't seem to notice the mass murders that go on, and I'm struggling to remember if anybody ever got sent down for any of the killings throughout all seven series.

One thing I found strange, and disappointing, was the lack of character development for the SAMCROW gang members, including Jax. They're all just cardboard cutouts doing the same things in series 7 that they did in series 1. Come the end of the show, I really couldn't have cared less what happened to them. They made a bit of an effort with "Juice" Ortiz, but it wasn't enough.

In contrast to the wooden bikers, most of the other characters actually had something about them that stopped the show from being complete rubbish. Gemma, Tara, Unser, Chucky, Wendy, Venus, Nero, the DA, and even a waitress that was only in the show for a few minutes, all had more depth to their characters than the gang members who didn't really do anything other than constantly kill people.

After six series of the show, I really would have thought they could have produced something special for the final series, but all we got was the same kind of thing, just faster paced.

This great gripping series ends with a flourish. Everything has gone wrong. With wife Tara murdered, Jax is out for revenge - gone forever any thoughts of going legitimate. Enemies had better watch out - from now on his ruthless policy to divide and conquer. Top priority - annihilation of the Chinese clan, accused by his mother Gemma for Tara's death. This is a lie. Gemma did it herself.

The stage is thus set for almost unrelieved carnage, attacks and counter-attacks, bodies in plenty - including loss of characters around for seven seasons.

From its start the show has centred on the Tellers, a family tearing itself apart, within it the seeds of self-destruction. The outcome is thus inevitable.

As ever, strong scripts and powerful performances make the series awesome viewing. As well as the main actors, two others deserve special mention. Throughout Theo Rossi has been moving as Juice, he vulnerable in so many ways. Sam Crow was his family, he now an outcast with nowhere to go. "It's too late for all of us!" he laments. Will this prove true? Then there is Dayton Callie as ex-sheriff Wayne. Elderly and with cancer, he has always close to Sam Crow and the Tellers - a wise adviser and confidant - not to mention, when required, literally clearing up the mess left by their slain victims.

13 episodes, some over an hour, all with bonus features. Often emotions run high as much loved colleagues complete their last scenes. Even Charlie Hunnam is in tears as he confesses he will really miss Jax.

With such a high standard maintained to its very end, here is a cult classic of which all concerned may be proud.

best season of the best show ever. Can't recommend enough. Every episode was a cliffhanger and if I'd been able to, I'd have watched all 13 episodes back to back so not to miss out on the excitement. To all the girls who don't think this will be their thing, give it a chance. I never expected to like it but ended up loving it more than the other half did!!
