Product Description

Product Description

Set in the summer of 1984 – Margaret Thatcher is in power and the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) is on strike. At the Gay Pride March in London, a group of gay and lesbian activists decides to raise money to support the families of the striking miners. But there is a problem. The Union seems embarrassed to receive their support. But the activists are not deterred. They decide to ignore the Union and go direct to the miners. They identify a mining village in deepest Wales and set off in a mini bus to make their donation in person. And so begins the extraordinary story of two seemingly alien communities who form a surprising and ultimately triumphant partnership.

There is so much to enjoy in Pride: the acting, the scenes that take in so many characters with such ease yet retain an intimate feel, as if you were among them, the elation of feeling barriers come down. There are some very funny moments mixed up with sadness, and conflict, both in the private sphere and over the course of action to take for the miners' strike in 1984 to achieve its aims, and the final appearance of miners at the front of 1985's Gay Pride march is triumphant, offsetting, at least to some extent, the sadness of their defeat on the strike front. The elements are mixed up to include footage from Wales and Gay's The Word bookshop in London, people's homes, gay clubs, a community centre, the beautiful Welsh countryside, the specially painted lesbian and gay bus ... It is amazing that these events could actually have happened, and when so many other films about political conflict contain so much savagery and killing, you feel how welcome it is to be able to learn something about history and enjoy such a life-affirming tone. Many strands are touched on fairly lightly, like so many streamers on a march. There is some superb music, some of it sung by characters in a very affirmative scene of social values; all the actors are outstanding, but Paddy Considine surprised me the most, his character gives a core of great warmth to the teeming events the film covers.

'Pride' is utterly brilliant. The story, the characterisation, the acting, direction, music, the politics, the lot.

It's about how a group of gay and lesbian activists in London combine to support a mining community in Wales during the Great Miners Strike of 1984-85 and about how that experience changes both the gay and lesbian activists and also the mining community. It's based on fact, on real characters and every part of it rings true.

I was part of a miners support group in the town where I lived and saw similar changes in both miners and supporters through the strike as the action of solidarity, of working to a collective common purpose empowered those involved and, in empowering them, changed their views: miners with racist ideas abandoned them in the face of financial contributions from Asian communities - one miner said: "I've been abused by some white people for being on strike, but no black or Indian person has abused me" similar changes happened with feminist women and with gay groups who altered their ideas about trades unions and 'macho' miners. 'Pride' captures that real experience superbly. That final point is brought home in 'Pride' where the 1985 Pride demonstration is lead by miners delegations from Wales and where the NUM leads the way in changing Labour Party policy towards lesbian and gay rights.

That a single film can tackle issues like sexuality, class, geography, AIDS, religion, homophobia etc and show how, via solidarity, people can overcome divisions is a fantastic achievement. That it can do so while avoiding sentimentality is even more remarkable. Sure there are scenes which tug at the emotions but that's because the emotions are real. There are also moments of great comedy.

Above all else, though, this is a film that shows that another politics is possible - a politics of hope.

This is an absolutely 'must watch' film! People clapped in the cinema when it finished. It is so uplifting, yet deals with some very real issues. However, although the politics set the storyline, it is more about human nature and the joining together of good people fighting for survival, their differing principles and for a future together. Working to build hope and understanding, altering long held blinkered opinions and deeply rooted beliefs. It is deeply moving and yet subtlety comedic at the same time. For those of us who remember the strike and the 1980's generally, it dealt skilfully and with sensitivity, the difficult issues of that time; whilst being spot on with the atmospheric 1980's scene that it set and played out in....it was just fantastic. We talked about it for ages afterwards and I have already asked my teenagers to watch it.....if only to let them know how poor their mother's dress sense was during that time....not forgetting the hairstyles! Seriously good film and the characters were portrayed brilliantly....we all knew someone who was like each of them....it was a film that you felt a part of somehow and it soaked into your soul and gently nudged awake long forgotten memories.... The music was fantastic too and worth a mention of its own....overall a really feel good film. Brilliant! I predict that this will be one of those films you will watch over and over again....and I didn't particularly like the 80's.....or so I thought!

Great film brought back happy memories and taught my young son what life used to be like, when homophobic attacks and abuse were common but we still would not give up.
The prejudice and ignorance which the lgbt community still experiences. I remember the abuse that used to be suffered and still is in a lot of areas despite the progress and legislation changes. Something the younger lgbt community don't experience to the same extent.
Funny, poinient and well written. The days when London was where people who were disowned by their own families ran to in order to try and make a life. Finding friends and 'family' that accepted you for who you were not your sexuality or gender identity.
Equality is something everyone is entitled to respecting diversity. Sometimes allies and supporters come from the strangest places. We have this group of people to thank for making a huge difference to how the UK has changed and should never stop challenging prejudice and ignorance.
Pride is the name of the film and pride is what everyone should have.
