Excellent film that is one of the best Bristish crime films of the period. Good plot, performances and use of outside locations. The film has been restored and presented in its intended ratio in a nice clear print from what Renown indicate as being the best source available to them. If you enjoy the likes of "The Long Arm" you will certainly enjoy this.

Waited years for this film to come out. forget Jack Warner as "Dickson of Dock Green" this
is more like a filmed Doc. than a film. Yolande Donlan was the film's director wife was not that
good, but if you can put up with that, a very good film

Warning: this review contains spoilers.

Film aficionados have long waited for this 1962 murder mystery to be released on DVD and, at last, here it is.

Based on the novel 'Sleep Long, My Love' by Hillary Waugh, with nods to the Brighton trunk murders of the 1930s, it concerns the police investigation following the discovery of a mutilated body in a remote house.

Filmed on location in and around Brighton, Sussex, UK, there is a strong emphasis on police procedure. The absence of a music soundtrack adds to the documentary feel of the film. The dialogue is snappy and realistic. The performances of the cast are uniformly good with those of Michael Goodliffe and John Le Mesurier being particularly noteworthy.

The film has atmosphere and pace but suffers from an abrupt ending.

And what a good evocation of the early 1960s the film is: water heaters mounted above the bath, telex machines, dingy boarding houses, groceries delivered by the local store.

For those who know Brighton well, there is the added interest of spotting the filming locations. In this regard, I can recommend the reelstreets.com website which has then and now shots.

Unfortunately, there are no subtitles.

Finally, a word of warning: do not look at the credits printed on the back of the DVD case before watching the film as it gives the game away.

'Brighton Rock' may be regarded as the best film set in Brighton, but, for my money, 'Jigsaw' runs it a close second.

The picture and sound quality are both very good. An excellent story right from the outset, with Jack Warner playing a superb lead role as the competent, although somewhat surly, police inspector. Excellent locations, especially around Brighton and a story that has suspense, skill and surprise almost from the outset. Definitely a film I shall be watching quite regularly. I did feel "held" by the whole film.

A murder at a remote bungalow, just outside Brighton. A woman came to a sticky end and the police must find the murderer, from precious few clues. They cannot even be certain of the identity of the deceased, so it means lots of detective work from the very outset.

An absolutely first class film.

Great Whodunnit with Jack Warner bringing his quite authority to the role as Inspector Fellows, the detective in charge of investigating who murdered and partially dismembered a young woman in the Brighton area.....and why?
This really is a super example of methodical policing and hunting down every clue to close the net on a baffling murder.
It does have a documentary feel to it.
Highly recommended....the only slight irritation is as others have said....the sudden ending.....as I wanted the film to continue seeing as it was so intriguing.
Trivia: The actor playing Tenby is John Barron, unrecognisable with a full head of hair as he is most famous for playing "CJ" ("I didn't get where I am today by........") many years later in The Fall & Rise of Reginald Perrin where he was bald as a coot!!!
He also directed Rossiter in several plays in the 1950's before they teamed up years later for Reggie Perrin.

Enjoy this film.....you won't be disappointed.
