Product Description

Product Description

Although it has much in common with Walerian Borowczyk s earlier work, Immoral Tales marks the point where his reputation as an arty pornographer began, and was sexually explicit enough to have caused problems with the censors on its original UK release.

It tells four stories revolving around particular taboos (virginity, female masturbation, bloodlust, incest), each delving further back in time, as if to suggest that the same issues recur constantly throughout human history and in all walks of life, whether it s Lucrezia Borgia (Florence Bellamy) or Erzsébet Báthory (Paloma Picasso in her only screen role) or the anonymous teenagers of the earlier episodes.

This high-definition restoration by Argos Films is being released on Blu-ray with English subtitles for the first time. The film is presented in two versions: the familiar four-part edition, and the original five-part conception, including the short film The True Story of the Beast of Gévaudan that was later expanded into Borowczyk s later feature The Beast. The disc also includes both cuts of A Private Collection (1973), the short film that scandalised film festival audiences with its witty and often graphic study of vintage erotica.

SPECIAL EDITION CONTENTS:

  • New high definition digital transfers of the feature and the shorts
  • Uncompressed Mono 2.0 PCM Audio
  • Optional English subtitles
  • Introduction by Borowczyk expert Daniel Bird
  • Love Reveals Itself, a new interview programme featuring production manager Dominique Duvergé-Ségrétin and cinematographer Noël Véry
  • A Private Collection (1973), presented in the commercially released version and the more explicit Oberhausen cut
  • Boro Brunch, a reunion meal recorded in February 2014 reuniting members of Borowczyk s crew
  • Theatrical trailer
  • Reversible sleeve featuring original poster designs
  • Collector s booklet

Excellent release and far better than the german blu-ray edition, where the episode "LA BÊTE DU GÉVAUDAN" is cut by more than 5 minutes. The english blu-ray features the real uncut 5 episode version as originally intended by the director. The image quality is the best what I have seen so far. Very interesting extras and interviews. Only the music sound quality in the a.m. episode film could have been better. Nevertheless a fascinating release with on of the best eroic movies ever made.

Immoral Tales is one of Borowzcyk's masterpieces, though it does not reach the heights of La Bete or L'ile d'amour. Borowczuk's style is distinctive: subliminal, insinuative imagery, slow build-ups leading up to explosive finales in which sexuality and (often) violence run wild, excellent scores and respectable acting, an amazing use of colour. All this amounts to much more than softcore pornography. Borowzcyk's achievement far surpasses the level of Emmanuelle and by far outstrips the likes of Franco and Brass.

This review is for the new edition (2015) of Walerian Borowczyk's "Immoral Tales" released by Arrow Video from the UK.

"Immoral Tales"(1974) was Borowczyk's first concerted foray into the realm of 'erotic' cinema and it created quite a stir upon its' initial screening at the prestigious British Film Institute (BFI) in London. The film originally consisted of 5 vignettes - the most outrageous of which: "The Beast of Gevaudan" was removed prior to general release - subsequently to be expanded and re-worked into the feature length movie "The Beast" - which was, arguably, Borowczyk's most controversial production.

Arrow Video has taken it upon themselves to re-release many of Borowczyk's most well known (albeit previously VERY difficult to find) films in a new series of combo BluRay + standard DVD formatted disks. All of these new releases have been given a first class restoration job from original master sources - producing the best visual quality yet for these very interesting and erotic films. The DVDs (in both formats!) are also loaded with high quality 'extras' - making this 'the definitive' edition to purchase, if one is so inclined.

Polish born, Borowczyk began his film career as an artist & animator and worked extensively in this milieu creating many (award winning!) short subjects for the cinemas, until that venue lost its' market. He then was encouraged to move to France where the political and social climate was much more permissive and he began to experiment with erotic themes in the aftermath of the hugely financially successful Euro-eroflik "Emmanuelle". Borowczyk brought his artistic sensibilities and love of surrealism to all of his movie-making, and has left a rich legacy of particularly artful erotic films.

The tale of the girl locked in a room with some suggestive old prints and a cucumber is the one that stayed in my my mind for 30 years before the time came for me to get it on DVD. The sound of that cucumber was the thing that resonated most: the suck and the squelch of it was delicious. Borowczyk has always been good with sound as well as his uniquely, often flat two dimensional, painterly visuals. But there was also the intense otherness of the girl's concentrated privacy as she worked it, unseen by us as we only get the view of her back torso. It's a visual poem. The cucumber story is in the naturalistic three dimensional style and concentrates on the textures of, usually solid, inanimate objects in the consistent closely observed Boro style found in all his films.
This film as a whole is not Borowczyk at his best but at least it's his second best.

Arrived within 24 hours and this collection is the type of collection that you need to watch 2 or 3 times to 'understand' what the director is trying to say. A collection ideal for film clubs or people who analyse films not general Saturday night viewing with love ones. Digital enhancement is well down and comes with English sub-titles. Not sure what is the point of The beast film. The only one that's is pointless in my view - a women having sex with a fictitious devil like creature (poor effects/costume). The other tales - brother taking advantage of 'naïve or not' sister. Horror tales - woman bathing in virgins blood to retain youth, lesbianism and the catholic church are all designed to shock when originally filmed and it probably did. But when compared to modern horror films (hostel etc.) or similar topics (Dogtooth, temptation of Christ) this collection is a little tame. Does not shock anymore - probably says something about our society. The helper in the blood bathing I feel is very attractive and familiar from other films - not sure where- need to investigate. Generally the actors are unknowns.

Certainly wonderfully erotic, loved the fourth tale, but not pornographic. Some camera work is a little long winded and therefore lengthens the tales, country scenes for example, but so typical of French films of this era. Great touches of humor and innuendos that challenge the establishment! Very watchable.
