It's difficult to explain the appeal of the Amicus compendium, or anthology movies to mainstream horror fans. On one level they don't really stand up to comparison with classic British horror like The Wicker Man or The Legend of Hell House, yet there is an irresistible charm in the overly simplistic approach, flawed plots, and pillar box red blood, that sets them apart from anything else and makes them great to watch time and time again. It isn't comedy horror, although I have heard it described that way, in essence the movies exists in a bleak netherworld as far as genre is concerned, which is highly appropriate given the nature of the films. If like me you're already a fan you'll be aware that these are two of the best of the breed, so the only question for you is the one that most of the reviews here seem preoccupied with; do the rather crude cuts from Vault of Horror ruin the movie?

As you have already discovered if you've read the other reviews, the first cut is the 'beer-keg' vampire scene where a huge black hole has been literally cut around Dannial Massey's shoulder to spare us the emotionally scarring sight of seeing a tap connected to him from where the vampires drink his blood. In the Vipco production of Vault of Horror (it doesn't have Tales from the Crypt) the scene remains intact. The other cut is where Terry Thomas has his head smashed in with a hammer. In this the scene is first frozen, then cuts to the next bit so we don't get to see the full extent of the injury or the look of near death on Thomas's face. Once again the Vipco DVD makes no cuts. But does it really matter? Let's examine the pros and cons.

When I heard that two of my faverite Amicus anthology films were being released on dvd I was overjoyed. However I was very dissapointed that the print of the Vault Of Horror is cut. The first segment called Midnight Mess is cut. The scene in question is where Danial Massey has his neck drained like a beer kegg. The scene is intact in the Vipco dvd release. The print however, is excellent and in widescreen.
On a more positive note Tales From The Crypt is totally uncut and once again is in widescreen.
It's nice that Midnight Movies are now releasing their dvds a 2 disk sets rather than the awful double sided dvd they used to release. So all in all I would say that this release is worth buying dispite one film being cut.

A typically 'Midnite Movies' value for money double film DVD, let down by the fact that 'Vault of Horror' is cut (and the even more frustrating prospect is that the UNCUT DVD is of poor quality and ratio!). Some scenes are trimmed for gore and blood, though its not obvious and bad enough to spoil the horror fun! Still, this is worth the purchase for the UNCUT 'Tales From the Crypt' and to hold on to a decent transfer of Vault of Horror until a new complete version eventually arrives.

As for the films, both are immensly enjoyable in a retro, late-night Horror nostagia fest kind of a way, 'Tales from the Crypt' being the better of the pair. With a plethora of big film names spread across the two films and plenty of old-style scares and suspense, if you are a fan of Amicus, Tigon, Hammer etc... you would be a fool to be without thesse two treats in your DVD collection.
Three stars for the above mentioned failings

TALES FROM THE CRYPT/VAULT OF HORROR
Two of the best Atmospheric suspense thrillers from AMICUS FILMS now on blu-ray for the first time ever
scream factory from Los Angeles have done a fantastic Job giving these 2 films HD blu-ray transfers
TALES FROM THE CRYPT which is more of a suspense thriller than a Horror
the transfer looks fantastic very clean & crisp in 1:85:1 widescreen
the best the film has ever looked actually
plus the Audio quality has been boosted with a new Master audio stereo mix which does sound better than the old Mono sound
better than the old dvd release for sure

VAULT OF HORROR has been given the exact same treatment as TALES FROM THE CRYPT
the 1:85:1 widescreen transfer looks exactly the same as the transfer given for TALES FROM THE CRYPT
very clean & crisp, the Audio quality is the same aswell, Master audio stereo mix
the only difference between the 2 films is

Scream factory have released the UNCUT/UNRATED version of Vault of Horror for the first time ever
with extra scenes inserted back into the film
these extra scenes seemed to Graphic to be released with the Theatrical cut back in 1973
the extra scenes are the extended kill scenes in all 5 of the stories maybe by an extra 60secs in all the stories
well for the first time ever this extra footage is inserted back in
the new blu-ray transfer for this UNRATED version does look beautiful in 1:85:1 widescreen
,really clean & crisp not much Grain at all hardly none infact
the Audio quality has been boosted to a new master audio stereo mix which sounds really Good
