Product Description

One of Hammer's most enduringly popular films and a benchmark for 1970s horror, Countess Dracula stars Ingrid Pitt in an iconic, career-defining role as the aged countess who must regularly bathe in virgins' blood to regain her fading youth. Genre stalwart Peter Sasdy directs arguably his best Hammer film, from a script by award-winning writer Jeremy Paul and showcasing a rousing score from composer Harry Robinson. Countess Dracula is featured here in a High Definition transfer from the original film elements in its as-exhibited theatrical aspect ratio.

In medieval Hungary, Countess Elisabeth Nadasdy, an embittered, ageing widow, discovers by accident that virgin's blood causes her skin to become youthful and smooth. Determined to retain her new youth at all costs, the Countess coerces her lover to abduct a string of young virgins to keep her supplied with the blood she now craves to stay beautiful...

This solid transfer, finally in the correct aspect ratio, complete with some great extras, provides a much needed celebration of the multi-talented Ingrid Pitt - a true survivor in a notoriously difficult industry. Ironically - and much to her disgust - Hungarian director Peter Sasdy had concerns about her accent and re-voiced her so I believe Joan Plowright is the voice of the decidedly naughty Countess, we actually hear on the soundtrack. A very strange decision! This release is recommended for fans and for new audiences too who may be rather surprised about how explicit this film actually is. It's such a shame that Ingrid is no longer with us to enjoy this new blu ray too.The print is quite good but not restored and there is often minor damage and significant grain issues in a number of darker scenes. That said, the definition is better than the old DVD and the black levels etc. more acceptable although the contrast is far from perfect in several outdoor sequences but this might be a problem inherent in the original footage. Still the design, costumes and general production values are high and the cast is certainly more than proficient with several talented British actors in supporting roles and Sandor Elés making an unusual but quite effective leading man. His rapport with the flamboyant Ingrid was not very good on set and he found her full blooded voluptuousness rather challenging! This new Blu Ray is worth the investment if you can buy it at around £10 as the extras are guaranteed to interest Ingrid's fans too. A good, well thought out release, with an splendid booklet containing not only the traditional film notes etc but a long, detailed and amusing article on the real Countess written by Ingrid herself that displays both her impressive academic knowledge and lightness of personal touch!

Interesting later Hammer entry that is quite understated and fairly unique in the Hammer Horror Canon. I've seen quite a lot of classic british horror on Blu and this transfer is servicable but not outstanding. The colours are a little faded and I had to turn the brightness down on my TV a little to get the picture looking right. It is perfectly acceptable though. Extras are interesting - especially an interview from YTV with Christa Ackroyd and Ingrid Pitt.

Classic Hammer Horror from the 70's looking great on Blu Ray. Excellent release including great extra features and an informative booklet. Although maybe not as horrific as Hammers other movies of that era, it stands out as one of the most interesting and is an essential addition to any fans collection.

This for me was one of hammer Horror's dark and creepy films which is so evil. Countess Elisabeth nadasdy(Ingrid pitt) has to abduct young virgins(am ok)with the help of her lover, to keep her supplied with blood, so it will keep her young and beautiful.

When the film was released in 1970, it was classed as a certificate X(bad) even today nothing has changed with a 18 certificate stamped on it, the great thing about this film are the sets, which are really creepy, but then again hammer films sets are all awesome, this for me is one of the reasons why I love hammer films. There are some good features on the disc I have listed them below, oh network have done a good job with the Blu-ray, very nice.

Another great release from Network of this Hammer horror. Once again a very good print & correct aspect ratio unlike a previous release I had from MGM midnite movies that boxed the image in the centre of the screen. This release also comes with a good selection of extras.

HAMMER made this movie as part of a four film deal with RANK.The movie uses a lot of the sets that were in its movie VAMPIRE CIRCUS For a movie like COUNTESS DRACULA you would have thought HAMMER would have gone to town with the blood but they did not as there is not a lot of blood in it and its a better movie for this. Now about the disc the sound is good and so is the picture except for the parts were filters were use which show up on screen but that cant be helped on the extras front we get picture gal an interview with miss PITT also a nice booklet a trailer for the movie and a episode of THRILLER its all in a nice case with the poster of the movie inside So another very nice disc from NETWORK at a nice low price lets hope we dont have to wait to long for VAMPIRE CIRCUS to come out
