O.K. so I decided the other day to check out both the Mothers Day and Evil Dead remakes back to back, and realised that they both sucked, which is not surprising really. All flashy style with no substance what so ever. A major problem within the movie industry nowadays is that they do not care about the audience, so it's just business as usual. Anyway, Mothers Day isn't exactly a horror classic but its still a brilliant trashy horror/exploitation flick from Troma, I still consider it to be one of Troma's best next to The Toxic Avenger. The three main characters, former college roommates, are all basically solid characters. A lot of time is spent developing their personalities, which makes it hard to watch what happens to them. Kidnapped by two sick backwoods brothers and brought home to their sadistic mother, one particular woman goes through appalling torture and rape, while the other two are tied and bound on exercise machines. When one of them dies, the remaining women band together and exact a graphic revenge. The gore effects in this movie are more extreme than Last House on the Left and I Spit on your Grave and were quite good, but that doesn't necessarily make it a tough one to watch. The two sickest effects are the Drano-down-the-throat and the sawed hands of one of the women, you also have some funny scenes as well especially with the dialogue between the demented mother and her boys. It was definitely a great film and worth tracking down, especially in this great blu-ray edition. The 1.78:1 AVC-encoded image is beautifully filmlike. The print used for the transfer has a bit of damage (mostly in the form of specks), but otherwise this is an amazing visual treat. The Dolby TrueHD 5.1 track is a little less appealing. I doubt it would be worth a serious re-master, but what's here is okay.Read more ›

The seventies brought us many grisly horror films depicting young teenagers being picked off by backwood country bumpkins and the like. Mothers Day carries that trend on into the early eighties but with more of a day-glo blood effect and some questionable acting.

Mothers Day is solidly enjoyable. It’s never as brutally chilling as some of its counter parts and does suffer from some moments of high end cheese but generally it focusses on developing its characters beyond the mindless teens or motiveless killers and creates something highly watchable.

Three teenage girls go on a camping trip and fall foul of two deranged boys and their equally unstable mother. She smothers them and controls their every move and they are too brainless to do anything else. She lives in perpetual fear of Queenie who she insists lives in the woods and uses this to keep her boys in check. The girls consequently become their play things.

The gory effects are fairly limited and apart from the odd notable scene this is mostly a tame affair with things suggested rather than shown. The film steps up another gear when the girls decide to exact their revenge and aside from some cheesy one liners and declarations of strength this is the most fun part of the film.

Never scary or even jumpy for that matter Mothers Day does struggle to be more than a one watch event, but it is fun and avoids some of the normal clichés to offer something a little fresher than normal.

Probably one of the most dull 'horror' movies I have seen. Don't go into this expecting it to please you if you're a gore hound. After the opening scene of the guy's head getting chopped off, it's 1 hour and 10 minutes until someone gets killed again.

There is nothing shocking here. The Toxic Avenger is way worse and far better at this stuff.

Very disappointed.

THIS REVIEW IS FOR THE REGION A ANCHOR BAY BLU-RAY!

Three women who have been friends since college head out for their annual girls weekend away to the remote wilderness of new jersy to fish, smoke some pot and reiminice about their college days, unfortunately two musclebound lunatics who've overdosed on TV and their even crazier mother live nearby. The sons take a liking to the women and duly kidnapp them for some rape, torture and tv re-enactment! Unfortunatley for the psychos they picked the wrong women to mess with.

Watching mothers day all these years later it definatley fits in with the body of work Troma have released over the years and has a very strong troma sensibility, some of this irreverence has perhaps led to the criticism that its mixture of horror and humour is somewhat uneven, however as a fan of tromas output over the years I really enjoyed Mothers day.

Like a lot of Troma movies, beneath the trashy horror exterior lies an (un)surprisingly smart little movie, here making some smart observations about pop culture, televison and modern american culture amidst all the onscreen carnage. The killers house is full of Tv's and pop culture memorabilia, the brothers whistle tunes from popular tv shows and much of their sadism is channeled through a pop culture sensibility. Imagine if you will, if quentin tarantino had been raised as a hillbilly and never got to channel his obsessions through film! Better yet Charlie Kaufman (Lloyds brother/partner in crime) not only directs the film well but presents the entire plot in a way that actually makes you empathise with the 'victims' and empowers them to the degree that when they turn the tables the audience sympathy is firmly with the women.
