Product Description

Product Description

Alongside Come Play with Me and Confessions of a Window Cleaner, Eskimo Nell takes its place as one of the most celebrated British sex comedies of the 1970s. Featuring a witty script from Michael Armstrong (who also stars) and directed by a young Martin Campbell years before he helmed the James Bond movies GoldenEye and Casino Royale Eskimo Nell is a hilarious satire on the low-budget British movie industry. Three inexperienced filmmakers (Armstrong, Christopher Timothy and Terence Edmond) attempt to make a movie version of the notoriously rude poem The Ballad of Eskimo Nell , with disastrous results. This classic British comedy features a cast of famous faces including Roy Kinnear (The Three Musketeers), Katy Manning (Doctor Who), Christopher Biggins (Porridge), Diane Langton (Carry On England), Anna Quayle (Grange Hill) and an eye-popping cameo from 1970s sex-bomb Mary Millington in her début movie. Re-mastered from the original film elements, and boasting a host of special features, Eskimo Nell celebrates its 40th anniversary on Blu-ray for the very first time.

Extras:

  • Region Free
  • Brand-new audio commentary with writer Michael Armstrong and historian Simon Sheridan
  • Reversible sleeve with alternate poster art
  • Booklet notes by Simon Sheridan
  • Theatrical trailer
  • Bonus short Mary Millington film

I've seen this movie at the old ABC (paired with "The Cobblers of Umbridge" it was the first "X" I ever saw!)on VHS and now DVD.
It is a truly funny film; being the tale of a newly graduated film-maker (plenty of in-gags) who gets suckered into making a movie based on the old risqué poem "Eskimo Nell"...and later through the crookedness of others finds himself having to make four separate versions to please four different(very different!) financial backers. There is enough beautiful bare flesh to satisfy;but what makes this movie worth paying out for is the comedy; excellent gags beautifully timed by a stalwart cast of seasoned British veterans. There are a lot of well known faces in this flick, trust me!
Oh: for Dr Who fans, Katy Manning is in this one!!!

Inspired by the 'Eskimo Nell' bawdy ballad, this film actually has nothing to with the ballad, but instead uses it as a film-within-a-film to create a superb and witty comedy that lampoons the so-called moral campaigners and the dubious characters that inhabited the 1970s low budget independent film industry.

The story involves three newcomers to the industry who end up tying up with Roy Kinnear's BUM productions to make a sex film. Unfortunately, they end up having to make different versions of Eskimo Nell, including one for the moral brigade. Kinnear's character is hilarious and obsessed with breasts and suing people.

This is a low budget movie from Stanley Long, who made the 'adventures' series, and sometimes looks a little rough round the edges, but makes up for this with the genuinely witty script and the fast moving plot that ends with a hilariously staged 'heist' scene. The final scene at the showing of the film made for the 'moral' brigade is so funny I almost ruptured something.

If you like 1970s British cinema, then this is a must see.

Three young men, new to the film industry, are recruited by an unscrupulous movie producer, Benny U Murdoch, played by Roy Kinnear, to make a film. The only trouble is, the three backers, each want a different film, starring different people.

Made in the mid seventies, at the height of the 'Confessions' films, this was made by Stanley Long, who went on to make the 'Adventures' films. The 'Confessions' films had a more well known cast, and had a bigger distributor (Columbia). The print used for this transfer has some scratches, mainly at the beginning, and bizarrely, there is a pulsating band on the left of the screen, all the way through the film. This varies from being hardly noticeable, to distracting. For a new blu ray release, at full price, this should not have happened. This problem is either a fault on the transfer, or possibly deterioration of the source material? Either way it should have been picked up before the film was put out on blu ray. Certain scenes look too bright, which in turn make some colours look faded. This could be the fact that this was a low budget film to begin with. There is also some digital noise in parts. This is marketed as a 40th Anniversary special edition. They could have at least made sure they had decent picture quality. Mary Millington is billed on the artwork, but only appears on screen for 10 seconds, in a non-speaking role. Not a very special release.

The image for this blu ray release is average, colours are faded in places. The original aspect ratio is 1.33:1 which is full screen, the intended ratio for cinemas was 1.85:1. This transfer is in 1.66:1. The sound is in the original mono.

Only an average release.
