BEING TERRIFIED IS JUST THE BEGINNING...

Initially reviled in its native land (some critics took exception to the fact the film was largely funded by the Canadian taxpayer), Shivers is an intensely claustrophobic, subversive masterpiece and an essential entry in the oeuvre of one of the horror genre s most gifted auteurs. Some 40 years after its release, it still retains its power to shock.

Starliner Island is an idyllic community. Cut off from the rest of the world, the luxury apartment block affords its occupants the chance to escape from the hustle and bustle of the big city. But this isolation is to prove fatal when a new breed of parasite a combination of aphrodisiac and venereal disease which arouses sexual aggression in its hosts is let loose in the building, resulting in an orgy terror and mayhem.

Known under a host of alternate titles such as The Parasite Murdersand They Came From Within!, Shivers is the startling debut full-length feature from director David Cronenberg which anticipates the body-horror concerns of his later films such as The Fly and Videodrome.

Awesome movie, but the Arrow Blu-ray is cut !!! It seems that something went wrong during the production process of the HD master. Many people hope that Arrow will release a better Blu-ray with the uncut/uncensored version in the near future.

Hopefully, they will make an exchange program for people like me who bought the first Blu-ray release...

Arrow have issued an update re the Shivers release and as much has been written/said about this, I thought it worth sharing here (see below).

As far as Shivers is concerned, it is one of my favourite Cronenberg films (along with Rabid and Videodrome). A nice twist on a zombie type theme, reflecting human behaviours - from peer influenced and those who consider themselves better than the rest of society. I haven't seen the film for some years (so am now looking forward to the revised release!), but I recall it appealing due to its pared back style (in part due to budgetary restrictions maybe and also a developing director who had plenty to share with the world and was happy to take risks, but isn't that often how the best work is produced and the genius shown of such gifted artists as David Cronenberg). I am giving 5 stars here as I think the film is worth of it, but also hope fans will take note of Arrows comments which I think represent a really fair approach and exactly what we had hoped for.

***SHIVERS UPDATE***
We’ve receive a fair few queries about the progress of this. First up, we can only apologise that it is taking far longer than we originally anticipated. We were very much hoping the situation would be resolved by the New Year but sadly this was not the case.
So, the good news is we will be running a replacement programme for this one so if you have purchased a copy of our release do keep hold of those proof of purchases!
The bad news is, we don’t have an exact timeline for this and at present it does look like this will be a bit of a way off. Unfortunately we're in the hands of TIFF who have their own schedule and Shivers isn't a priority for them at present.

Passed uncut by the BBFC for many years here in the UK, yet the recent Arrow Blu-ray is cut for gore and violence by around 17 seconds during pivotal moments. Subsequently the film is ruined, with the nature of some scenes dramatically altered. A complete waste of time.

Besides having key segments cut from the film, they used a film print for the transfer! The reel change markers are still VERY visible and annoying!! They are the black splotches (we film fans call them cigarette burns) in the upper right of the screen before a splice (reel change). In this digital age, this is unacceptable for a HD blu ray presentation. There should be no cuts (in film) or splices appearing on a finished product. Don't get me started on the edits that were made on this film. Outrageous!! Arrow hasn't screwed up this much since the THE BEYOND fiasco.

Shivers was the first feature that the world would get to see after Cronenberg's initial Canadian works (Stereo, Crimes of the Future & Secret Weapons); it was retitled and marketed towards the cult horror market- which has given Cronenberg such a strange reputation (Scorsese worked in the exploitation market also!). So, Shivers is sometimes known as They Came from Within or The Parasite Murders- which are silly titles and don't suit a film about parasitical vampires working their way though the occupants of a housing block...
The parasite is created by Dr Emil Hobbes, who we see killing a schoolgirl in a graphic manner (minus explanation) at the start- the parasite is a sexual transmitted bug that moves from orifice to orifice. It passes between kissing people or into them in the bath (particularly vile, in a lovely way this). I s'pose lots of essays on it mention AIDS, though this was made in 1975!
The parasite feels like something out of Burroughs, while the housing block recalls JG Ballard's High Rise- or that found in Cronenberg's adaptation of Crash (the imagery in Crash is not unlike that found here or in Scanners- that anonymous Canadian city thing Douglas Coupland mentions in Girlfriend in a Coma). The future in present tense; though as film-maker Alex Cox noted when this was shown on BBC2 in 1997 (the last time they transmitted a season of works by a particular director?)- this imagery is shared with George Romero's classic Dawn of the Dead. That collective consciousness thing.
You can also detect Repulsion as well as Romero's earlier Night of the Living Dead in images towards the end. There is also some black comedy, involving umbrellas and top Goblins-style music from Ivan Reitman (better known as director of GhostBusters now).
