Product Description

Product Description

First they faked his death and gave him a new identity. Now a top secret organisation is training a former New York cop to combat corrupt forces operating outside of the law. His mentor, Chiun, is an ageing Korean master of the martial arts who can run on water and dodge speeding bullets.

Born on the pages of Warren Murphy and Richard Sapir s The Destroyer series of men s adventure novels, Remo Williams was placed in the capable hands of Bond director Guy Hamilton (Goldfinger, The Man with the Golden Gun) for his big-screen outing. Fred Ward (Tremors) plays the trainee assassin, with Academy Award-winner Joel Grey (Cabaret) occupying the role of Chiun.

With its classic set-piece atop the Statue of Liberty, much-loved score by Craig Safan and a healthy sense of its own silliness, Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins... offers up a cracking slice of mid-eighties action.

had seen Remo in the 80's when it originally came out. I remembered it as good old fashioned adventure, as I watched it I remembered the plot, no swearing or sex scenes or graphic gore, wholesome yet gutsy, the whole family enjoyed it (including our 20 year old son who is used to the movies of today, blood and gore etc.) One for all the family really.

A cop is killed off and resurrected as a super assassin by a 3 man, underground government unit called CURE. Their objective is to wipe out the scum that appear seemingly untouchable to the system and so, as it says in the title, the adventure begins...
Excellent comedy action adventure which hits the right key and, is to this day criminally underrated.
Ward, another vastly under used actor (don't believe me? Check out Tremors, Southern Comfort and Miami Blues) plays the title character and as usual, turns in a very likeable performance.
The cast do a great job, the stunts are fun, the script is lively and there is no excessive violence or sex.
Admittedly its not quite The Destroyer (the books by Murphy & Sapir it was based on) and it is an undeniably, all American burger of a movie, with extra cheese but it nontheless hits the spot and is a lot better than one would think. Sucking in the viewer by not taking itself too seriously and not treating it's audience as a bunch of idiots.
What a shame they never made a sequel. Bit like Doc Savage: Man Of Bronze, that could of done with a sequel coz that was ace too!
Anyway, that's just my opinion.
The region 2 dvd release by MGM is fairly rubbish. No extras and in my opinion a sub standard, grainy print. Don't get me wrong, the print is watchable, but come on MGM, give us fans a pristine bluray with a ton of extras... After all, we're lovely and deserve it!
The Statue of Liberty sequence is extremely memorable.
4.5/5 Great 80's family action film. Rounded up.

This is an odd little stand alone 80's movie that you've either heard of or you haven't, its an action adventure about a man who was once a decorated cop has his identity changed after his death is faked so he can become part of a top secret team working for the president taking down scum bags in the legal system, he gets help and guidance from an old Korean martial arts master who can walk on water and dodge bullets, its very sort of James bond in a way and it puts a new spin on things too, its based on an adventure novel and is directed by Guy Hamilton who also Directed Goldfinger and the man with the golden gun, its a very cool movie with plenty of action, nothing extreme but plenty of stunts etc, the cast is all good, Fred Ward is a good lead as Remo and Joel Grey has some great make-up work for Chiun, Kate Mulgrew also stars, she is probably most famous for playing captain Kathryn Janeway in star trek voyager, the soundtrack is cool too with a catchy main theme, if you love 80's movies then this is a must check out especially as its had first class Blu-ray treatment.

Blu-ray had great picture quality and sound.
Tons of features including commentary, trailers, documentary and interviews etc.
Has a nice 35 page booklet and a reversible sleeve with the original poster art from the 80's.

I'm not sure that this is technically a B-Movie (since Chiun's makeup got an Oscar nomination in 1985) but this movie has the charm of a B-Movie. I own the Region 1 fullscreen edition and finally gave up on MGM releasing a proper widescreen edition. The Region 2 one fit the bill and was pretty cheap. Thanks Amazon UK!

REMO WILLIAMS: THE ADVENTURE BEGINS... [1985] [Blu-ray] Here Comes a New Kind Of Enforcer! Make Way . . . or else!

First they faked his death and gave him a new identity. Now a top secret organisation is training a former New York cop to combat corrupt forces operating outside of the law. His mentor, Chiun [Joel Grey], is an ageing Korean master of the martial arts who can run on water and dodge speeding bullets.

Born on the pages of Warren Murphy and Richard Sapir’s “The Destroyer” series of men’s adventure novels, Remo Williams was placed in the capable hands of Bond director Guy Hamilton ‘Goldfinger’ and ‘The Man with the Golden Gun,’ for his big-screen outing. With its classic set-piece atop the Statue of Liberty, much-loved score by Craig Safan and a healthy sense of its own silliness, ‘Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins…’ offers up a cracking slice of mid-eighties action.

FILM FACT: Accolades: 58th Academy Awards®: Nominated: Best Makeup. A significant set piece within the film takes place at the Statue of Liberty, which was surrounded by scaffolding for its restoration during this period. For the awesome and spectacular Statue of Liberty scenes, a replica of the Statue's torso, head and arm was built in Mexico. The shots of the replica were intercut with footage shot at the real Statue of Liberty.

Cast: Fred Ward, Joel Grey, Wilford Brimley, J.A. Preston, George Coe, Charles Cioffi, Kate Mulgrew, Patrick Kilpatrick, Michael Pataki, Davenia McFadden, Cosie Costa, J.P.
