Product Description

Biyi Bandele makes his directorial debut with this adaptation of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's novel starring Thandie Newton and Chiwetel Ejiofor. In the late 1960s twin sisters Olanna (Newton) and Kainene (Anika Noni Rose) arrive back home in Nigeria, having finished their studies in England. While Olanna moves in with her boyfriend, professor Odenigbo (Ejiofor), and his young houseboy, Ugwu (John Boyega), Kainene becomes a businesswoman and gets involved with British writer Richard (Joseph Mawle). When the Nigerian Civil War breaks out the sisters' lives are changed forever.

The only regret I have is that I did not see this film in the cinema, it would have really come alive in large screen. The film, based upon the excellent book of the same name is an emotional roller coaster. It starts with the heady optimism of Nigerian Independence, the descent of that poor country into ethnic violence and corruption, the cruel fate of the Igbos whose only crime was to create a safe haven in a country of their own. It is cleverly told through the lives of a diverse group of people of all races who were affected by these terrible events. I watched it with my wife, who is Nigerian and she loved it's authenticity.

The storyline is very touching and emotional and well acted out by the blend of international and local well breed actors. It allows me as a Nigerian who only heard of the Biafra war to appreciate what it entails in some details. I salute the courage of the revolutionary mind and the loss of lives of those who believed in their right and died protecting it. I see the movie as a wake up call for Nigeria to revisit that past, learn from it and make corrections in the present.

I read the book six years ago and my memory of it is therefore dimmed but I draw in part on my review of the book. As usual the film selects parts of the story and thereby leaves you in the dark about some events like the effects of seeing the brutality of the slaughter in Kano. One part done well was the use of black and white newsreel footage to tell the history of Nigeria at the time but in line with the Biafran bias, though we see Ojukwu and hear his Sandhurst accent, we never see Gowon present the federal side. This is a story by an Igbo author being a great apology for Biafra. The one thing I found incredible in the book, repeated in the film, was the assertion that some expatriates encouraged the killing of Igbos in the North. I had friends in the North who witnessed the murders. They were horrified and traumatised by the butchery and never recounted any expatriate approval let alone encouragement of genocide.
This is a powerful well told story. The life of well to do Nigerians and expatriates in the newly independent Nigeria is well related. But were Nigerian sixties women as free with sexual favours as the twins in this film? Overall the film came across as one more about personal relations with the was more of an incidental setting rather than central. The Biafrans were starving during the conflict. Everyone here looked well fed but as in Schindler's List, representing emaciation is not possible. Overall, too much sex and not enough of ordinary Nigerian life. The central characters are part of a privileged elite.

Not quite as good as the book, but there will always so much which can be incorporated into a film adaptation. I did like the inclusion of the documentary clips which set the scene and context for the story. Overall a very good film with a fine cast.

Chiwetel is a very underated actor. As an African I appreciate this movie because it highlights the impact of ethnic divides which is common in all or most african countries. I was devasted after watching this movie....I did not expect the movie to be as gripping. The only issue I had was with Thandie' s accent....while her character was believed to have studied abroad and would have adopted some sort of 'western' accent her accent was Zimbabwean/Southern Africa which was quite distracting. She could have made more of an effort as she is otherwise a good actress but she didn't do her homework on this one I am afraid.

If ever there was a film that hammered home the fact that books are best then this is the one. The book is fantastic: subtle and complex with inter-woven storylines that tell an holistic story of Biafra. This film is so very poor in comparison; a pale shadow of the book. It selects scenes and characters to keep the pace without considering that the viewer needs to understand the motivations of the characters to 'enjoy' the story. I watched with my family who had not read the book and they confirmed that it was a poor movie.

The book is wonderful; the movie is poor.

Good time delivery , shockingly the movie is absolute crap !
If you read the book and want to buy the movie - DONT
If one hasn't read the book it doesn't make sence and if you have read the book , you will notice that whole chapters of the book are missing and it does not follow the storyline !
It should never been made . Waste of money !

Arrived promptly which was good. The film itself not as good, did not feel drawn into the storyline. Production not as good. The book was much better.
