Interesting dvd release looking at the lives of a collection of gay porn stars that gives a never before glimpse into their real world.

Starting with a history of the gay porn movie with clips from movies and stars from the 70s and 80s, this short (70 mins) documentary describes how, with the public recognition of AIDS, the changes and dangers that were being faced by porn stars and the public perception of those involved. Into the 2000's and the rise of the internet, porn is a billion dollar industry that, in reality, with the aid of a video camera, anyone can be involved in, though to some, is still a taboo subject.

The bulk of the movie is made up of discussions with 4 gay porn stars, discussing their work, their techniques, and most interestingly of all, their life away from the camera. Oddly enough 3 of the 4 stars are straight in real life! Cover star Johnny Rapid for example has a girlfriend and 2 children. The general idea for all 4 is that - this is just a job! The discussions are quite frank and interspersed with clips of the stars in action, who they like performing with, what positions they like best, interaction with fans, etc. We find out what Brent Everett's mother thinks about her sons career choice and how some porn stars are appearing in the mainstream. Colby Jensen definitely comes across as the most pleasant and 'down to earth' amongst the four, Rapid the most arrogant and, at times, unconvincing. He describes what he likes to do to dominate women and then how he likes to receive the same treatment from men.

Like a previous review, although I don't know if scenes have been removed, the film is quite badly edited and censored in the most appalling way.Read more ›

Not content with scrubbing their documentary film "Sagat" clean of all hardcore imagery before submitting it to the British Board of Film Classification (without bothering to mention it on the UK packaging, of course...), TLA has capitulated further to the Board's dictates by removing 2 minutes 21 seconds worth of hardcore smut from "I'm a Porn Star", at the BBFC's request. Never mind that the uncut version will soon be available across America and vast swathes of Europe. Apparently, UK viewers MUST be protected from this 'filth', and both the BBFC and compliant distributors are going to ensure that's exactly what happens, regardless of any and all arguments to the contrary.

The BBFC's own definition of a 'sex work' (into which IAPS has been unceremoniously dumped) is a contradictory bit of double-speak which runs as follows: "Sex works are works whose PRIMARY PURPOSE [my emphasis] is sexual arousal or stimulation. Sex works containing only material which may be simulated are generally passed 18. Those containing clear images of real sex, strong fetish material, sexually explicit animated images, or other very strong sexual images will be confined to the R18 category."

So, to be clear: The BBFC defines a 'sex work' as a film whose PRIMARY purpose is the explicit depiction of sexual activity from one scene to the next, throughout the entire narrative, in a fashion designed to stimulate the viewer. Hardcore films of this nature are properly classified R18.

However, some softcore films (which might otherwise be passed at 18) add a small amount of hardcore footage into the mix, which is where the BBFC seems determined to find problems where none exist.Read more ›

The premise of what is like to be a porn star had merit, and the initial opening highlighting the historical growth of the industry was fine. Once we got to the present day it became a series repetitive variations on the theme. Odd little scenes caught ones attention but for the main it is rather dull and almost a wasted disc.

Its a very interesting documentary to say the least. Nobody really understands what it is like to be a porn star, but this really gives you an idea of the live they lead outside of the cameras, and how each one sees themselves. Its really worth the watch.
