Product Description

Product Description

Triple bill of Sergio Leone Westerns starring Clint Eastwood as the Man With No Name. In 'A Fistful of Dollars' (1964), the laconic gunslinger (Eastwood) makes a financial killing by playing two feuding families off each other in a small southwestern town. 'For a Few Dollars More' (1965) sees him reluctantly joining forces with bounty hunter Colonel Mortimer (Lee Van Cleef) to battle psychotic bandit El Indio (Gian Maria Volonte) and his gang of outlaws. In 'The Good, the Bad and the Ugly' (1966), set during the American Civil War, the paths of three loners - Joe (Eastwood), Tuco (Eli Wallach) and Setenza (Van Cleef) - cross as they search for the grave of Bill Carson, home to a hidden fortune. As the war intensifies, the treasure seekers become drawn into a battle that dwarfs their own mercenary pursuits.

I will skip a review of these films, as anyone here looking at this review already knows that all three of these films are masterpieces of their genre, and must-owns on Blu-Ray. What I will review is the latest remaster for this trilogy set. I own both the 2010 Man With No Name Trilogy and the latest 2014 remastering of the MWNNT. So how do they compare?

To begin, only The Good, The Bad and The Ugly gets a 4K remastering; as far as I can tell, the other two films are exactly the same as the 2010 box set. So how does the new PQ of TGBU remaster rate? Decidedly mixed, IMO.

As well reported, the 2010 Blu-Ray release of TGBU was marred by some PQ issues, namely DNR was liberally used throughout the film, to wipe away some (but not all) of the grain inherent with the film stock TGBU was shot in. However, I did not find the DNR to be nowhere near as bad as some other infamous Blu-Ray titles, such as 'Predator: Ultimate Edition', 'Gladiator' and 'Patton'; for instance, actors did not appear waxy in the 2010 TGBU release, as was the case in those other aforementioned Blu-Ray releases. Overall, while far from perfect, I found the picture to be reasonably good-looking for a film of its age, film stock and budget. That being said, a film of this caliber cries out for an extensive remastering, à la Lowry Digital.

Sans Lowry, the new 2014 Blu-Ray remaster of TGBU has, for the most part, rectified the DNR issue, with DNR being used far more discreetly this go-around. Overall, the 2014 release has a nice, crisp look; whether this is attributable to the 4K scan or the lack of DNR, I can only guess. Is it sharper than the 2010 release? At times, it is indeed ... but not always. This is not surprising to me, given the film's age and the film stock it was shot on.

a great transfer to blu ray of these films, the remastering of The Good The Bad And The Ugly was excellant, wish the other 2 films had been remastered as in my opinion they were far better films, although most people would`nt agree, well worth buying.

This review is about the 2014 remaster of 'The Good, the Bad and the Ugly'. The film, of course, is a classic. This version is not. It's been mastered from a new 4k source - this looks sharp, lots of detail. However, the colour has been changed - its been given a modern (and overused) look. The darks have a bluish tinge and skin tones are orange. I personally do not like this. Also, this is the extended version, with the added scenes having dialogue recorded by Clint and Eli Wallach a few years ago. The new scenes add nothing. Finally, the soundtrack has been changed - lots of sound effect changed or added. The iconic spaghetti western pistol has been changed to a more realistic pistol sound. Why? I just want the original theatrical cut back - not this.

Had all three of these in ordinary DVD, just wanted to upgrade to Blu-ray. A good price for this triple set - very happy with purchase. One note on The Good, Bad, Ugly - for the very first time I saw several scenes never viewed before (interesting).

Dollars Trilogy = 5 star, but....

The Good The Bad & The Ugly, extended version feels hacked about and the English dubbing of the extended scenes is awful. If they had offered seamless branching and the option to watch the theatrical release this would have been 5 stars.

Love Clint Eastwood in all his productions. Hard with a sense of humour always. I have all his work and revisit them frequently.
