Product Description

Nine killed her, nine shall die, nine eternities in doom!

Horror legend Vincent Price (The Fall of the House of Usher, Theatre of Blood) is Dr. Phibes, former musician, current murderer. Seeking revenge from the medical staff that left his wife for dead, he sets about knocking them off one-by-one in a series of elaborate murders based upon a Ten Plagues of Egypt. Death by bats, by boils, by blood and more await the nurse and surgeons who failed to save the life of the beloved Victoria Regina Phibes!

A camp classic, The Abominable Dr. Phibes sets itself apart from the seventies horror crowd with its knowing humour and art deco sets, and also prefigures the Saw movies with its increasingly fiendish set of murder devices.

Pairing the original film with sequel Dr. Phibes Rises Again, The Complete Dr. Phibesprovides viewers with a double diabolical dose of macabre thrills and black comedy.

FILM FACT: Dr. Phibes takes his inspiration for the murders from the Old Testament, the Ten plagues of Egypt. The plagues described in the movie differ slightly from the Biblical account: Boils; Bats; Frogs; Blood; Hail; Rats; Beasts; Locusts; Death of the first born and Darkness.

Since I first saw these movies as a child, my love of Vincent Price and the Dr Phibes films have never waned.
At last those wonderful people at Arrow have issued a limited release (3,000) box set that not only incorporates both Phibes films with a clutch of extras but also a superb 100 page book to accompany the Phibes phenomena.
A shame that no deleted scenes or such-like was either found or indeed around for inclusion but the quality of the movies on Blu-ray are superb, at times so sharp it belies the age of the movies themselves.
Along with Theatre of Blood and Madhouse, the Phibes movies are important for anyone who was interested in Price's career as they represent a clutch of fine English output with Vincent in the early seventies. Arrow have given us Theatre of Blood and now the Phibes box set, please let's have a similar issue for Madhouse to complete that Price (ly) period of Vincent.

ARROW BLU RAY RELEASE: Two decent horror films. Arrow's visual quality was not bad but certainly not as good as it could have been. I have played blu rays of films of this age and earlier that have boasted far superior picture quality. Network's releases of The Professional television series (shot on 16mm film) proves the point as to what is achievable. Vincent Price's camp, over the top acting yet with credible pathos suits the subject matter to perfection and he bolsters both films as the insane disfigured lonely man who yearns to be re-united with his gorgeous wife. Good escapist entertainment.

I recall my parents showing me both of the Dr Phibes films when I was a (rather odd) child and it's stayed with me ever since. The late, great Vincent Price portrayed the titular character who initially takes revenge on the medical team who failed to save his wife's life after she was fatally injured. Being the highly camp film it is, Phibes' methods take the form of using the various plagues of Egypt, as described in The Book of Exodus - so cue death by frogs (a murderous fancy dress mask); locusts (this *still* scares the whatsit out of me, even now!); bees (released in an aeroplane); blood (just awful!) and many more. The final one, reserved for the head of the surgical team, is the 'death of the first-born' and yes, it's just as harrowing as it sounds.

As for the sequel, 'Dr Phibes Rises Again', as you can undoubtedly tell from the title, Dr Phibes is at it again, this time his murderous ways centre around the quest to have his late wife resurrected in Egypt's 'River of Life', so yes, more themed murders follow. I personally didn't enjoy the second film as much as the third, but my parents seem to prefer this one.

So, in conclusion: if you enjoy Vincent Price films and horrific, albeit rather theatrical deaths, then you'll love both of these films. I find much of the fun emanates from spotting the classic stars of stage and screen in the cast list.

I have to say from the start that the content of the first movie in my opinion echos that of Theatre of Blood, but that apart it is a brilliant movie, and some of the ways Vincent Price despatches his victims has to been seen to be believed. The first movie follows Vincent Price as Phibes in his endevour to liquidate the surgeons he holds responsable for the death of his beloved wife. An enjoyable movie on any level. The second of the two movies covers Dr. Phibes quest to find the river of life before his rival. In my opinion not quite as good as the original, then sequels rarely are but very enjoyable just the same. I would recommend this set to any and all Vincent Price fans and anyone else who enjoys black comedies.
