THE HIJACK....THE ORDEAL....THE RESCUE...

Cannon Films are known for producing some of the most enjoyable and eccentric action flicks of the 80s but The Delta Force, which boasts scenes of Chuck Norris flying through the air on a missile-mounted motorbike, surely stands as one of their most entertaining efforts.

American Travel Ways Flight 282 has been hijacked by a group of terrorists claiming to represent the New World Revolutionary Organisation. The Delta Force, under the leadership of Captain Scott McCoy (Chuck Norris), is called in to handle the situation. Still smarting from an ill-fated hostage rescue mission several years prior, this elite squad of special forces are determined to succeed in their mission this time and assert the might of the American military once and for all.

Drawing on a number of true-life terrorist incidents for inspiration, most notably the 1985 hijacking of TWA Flight 847, The Delta Force is a non-stop thrill ride which culminates in one of the most explosive action flick finales of all time. With Chuck Norris on hand to provide the muscle and gravelly-voiced Lee Marvin (The Killers) in his last ever screen role, The Delta Force is one mission you can t afford not to accept.

This typical but well-made action movie, which spawned numerous sequels, means to combine the best elements of the disaster movie with the hard-boiled attributes of traditional action-adventures. When a plane is hijacked to the Middle East by Palestinian terrorists, the Pentagon calls into action the Delta Force, an elite squad of highly trained commandos led by tough guy mainstay Lee Marvin and karate-action-star Chuck Norris. Their mission is simple: to thwart the terrorists and rescue the hostages and the plot concentrates largely on just that, as the team uses its experience and fighting skills to get the job done. Its sometimes preachy patriotic bent occasionally gets in the way of the action and Norris is a one-dimensional figure who at times takes himself too seriously, but his rapport with easy-going veteran Marvin moves the film over some implausible rough spots. While not a groundbreaking contribution to the genre, Delta Force impresses with its straightforward tough-guy style. --Robert Lane --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

I must confess to being a bit surprised by this, my first foray into the world of the Chuck Norris film. Expecting a generic shoot-em-up and action flick I was genuinely surprised at the time spent on developing a reasonably intelligent script with decent characters (as well as the excellently done shoot-em-up and action sequences).

It's a simple premise, a plane has been hijacked by some nasty terrorist types, and it's up to Lee Marvin and Chuck Norris to save the hostages and kick the bad guys rumps. The film makers have thrown in every available plot device to make the mission as difficult as possible, and some effective look at the attitudes of the time and place, especially towards Jews. It's an entertaining romp that occasionally makes you stop and think.

With a host of familiar faces and great actors (Martin Balsam, George Kennedy, Joey Bishop, Bo Svenson) as the hostages, the scenes on the plane which are necessarily missing the two main stars are well portrayed and hold the attention, and in some cases manage to have quite an impact. The action team are well chosen, with Norris doing his usual stuff and Marvin grumping about looking mean. They work well together to bring a real feel of excitement to the screen.

It's not a film without flaws, most of the introductory scenes set years before the hijacking a the attempts to get Norris' character onto the rescue mission could have been dropped and only serve to make the film longer without really adding to the plot. Robert Vaughn is somewhat wasted as the general in charge, and at times the terrorists are a little too clichéd, but in general this is a classic. An especially nice touch is the final scene with the differing receptions for the freed hostages and the special ops team who rescued them. A thoroughly entertaining film, and a fitting end to Lee Marvin's carer, 5 stars.

The Delta Force is, if you didn't already know, an elite band of American soldiers who do everything from rescue hostages to perform excessive wheelies on motorbikes while pursuing planes on runways. So, when some nasty ol' terrorists take a plane-load of innocent civilians hostage, the government calls in Lee Marvin and Chuck Norris. The terrorists don't stand a chance.

The current trend in Hollywood film-making is serious, serious, serious. Franchises like The Bourne Identity, Nolan's Batman saga and post-Brosnan James Bond are dark and moody. Sure, they're great films, but are they fun? Do you really find yourself cheering and laughing as you watch? I didn't. But I sure did with the Delta Force.

There's no way the Delta Force can be taken totally seriously. The Delta Force are basically indestructible and the terrorists unable to hit anything with their hopelessly inadequate machine guns (think the Stormtroopers in Star Wars). Chuck Norris therefore guns, hits and generally blows up hundreds of bad guys without even ruffling his beard.

Yes, it's daft. Yes, it's unrealistic. And, yes, it's probably a bit dated and maybe even a little politically incorrect in its representations of certain `non-western' cultures. But, if you can put all that aside, it's also damn good fun. My one regret is that I watched it alone. It's the perfect movie to invite the guys round and have a few beers to.

Seriously, they don't make `em like they used to. Tragic.

Awesome from the start with amazing music an 80s atmosphere to die for !!!The plot is simple with terrorist scum high jacking a plane and an anti Jew rhetoric . Team delta to the rescue which back in 86 was an evolving unit which in reality is far better than the crappy British SAS . Time to re-buy !!Oh love just love the scene when Chuck came off the truck and the music came on as the charging terrorist received a judo throw and tai Kwondo thrashing (forgive the spelling of the Korean MA ) I do Aikido. Then the awesome motorbike scene when Chuck was getting on board the plane on the motor bike whilst the plane was moving with the aid of a rope !!That reminds me , time for my total gym , evening work out !!Thanks Chuck !

That bit where he is riding the motorbike up the hill (without a crash helmet) and his mullet is blowing in the breeze... and the sun is just strating to rise. Norris IS all things 80's.
Useful fact: Chuck Norris can slam a revolving door.

The Delta Force is a brilliant film with some great action sequences and this is a great release from Arrow.

You get a nice little booklet plus a very good revisable cover, and the Blu-ray transfer is beautiful in parts, you do get the odd grainy scene but over all the picture quality gets a BIG! 5/5.
