KILL ME, PLEASE KILL ME... BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE

Late one full moon-lit night, a woman stands alone on the roadside waiting for her husband to return to their broken-down car. Suddenly she s pounced upon, dragged into the dark woods and savaged by a barely-glimpsed assailant something barely human. But this is only the beginning of the terrors in The Beast Within...

Seventeen years on, and the devoted parents of teenager Michael are at their wits end. Their son lies in a hospital bed, his body wracked by a mysterious illness. With doctors unable to offer any diagnosis, Michael s desperate parents are forced to seek out the answer themselves by digging up traumatic past events and confronting the true nature of their son s conception.

The Beast Within stands apart from other creature features due to its decidedly grim tone the scenes in which the monster violates his victims have proven too strong for some critics and standout transformation sequence courtesy of makeup artist Tom Hoerber (My Bloody Valentine). Add to these the strong lead performances from Paul Clemens and Ronny Cox (Deliverance, The Car, RoboCop), alongside a stunning score by the late, great Les Baxter, and you have yourself one absolute beast of a movie!

Ever since I was a twelve-year-old child, when I walked into a room and saw just a few seconds of TBW on a vhs rental tape my brother was watching - it stuck in my mind. Also, the scene in question was of Michael searching the basement! Just a few seconds seen and it made quite the impression on me growing up...Watching TBW now and it's actually quite languidly paced, directed by the documentary filmmaker Philippe Moira, who maintains the slow tempo until the finale's special effects sequences, which do not disappoint. An old school '80's horror presented with impeccable blu ray picture and sound.

First of all, this is not a film that everyone will enjoy - it has a slow burning story and builds up to the gore with slow, darkly shot and suspenseful scenes. If you are expecting something fast-paced, then try to put those expectations aside - let the story unfold at its own pace and the pay-off is much greater.

Arrow have done an outstanding job with this release, presenting the film uncut with beautiful audio and picture (offering both HD and SD versions of the film). The image is sharp, as with many Arrow releases, and the uncompressed audio sounds wonderful (turn your TV up loud and you can really hear the leaves crunch). The presentation is flawless, considering the film came out over 30 year ago.

The array of special features covers a lot of ground for those wishing to learn more about 'The Beast Within', and includes a nice little collector's booklet (I say little, it's actually 45 pages in length!).

For fans of 80's horror or cult cinema in general, this release is worth the money - especially if you know what you are getting into. As mentioned above, the film is not for everyone - as other reviews have pointed out, the story would never win any awards. It is however original and entertaining enough to maintain interest, and ends up being a pretty fun 98 minutes.

If you're considering buying this release, the chances are you already know what to expect ("one absolute beast of a monster movie!"), and for those blind buyers - keep an open mind, you might be surprised! I wanted to release the beast within my pants after seeing this in HD.

Full marks to the fine fellows at Arrow Video for digging out this long forgotten curio but a right royal thumbs down to the actual filmmakers who made this decidedly sombre offering, which even with some cool make-up bladder effects fails to engage or horrify...

We begin this darkly grim tale in 1964 where newlyweds Eli (Ronny Cox) and Caroline (Bibi Besch) are about to begin their honeymoon in Mississippi when the car breaks down in the middle of the woods (as these things do in a horror movie). When Eli goes off to look for help, Caroline is inexplicably attacked by a grotesque creature which impregnates her before leaving this hapless bride for dead... Years later the now teenage boy named Michael (a dull Paul Clemens) dresses all-american like he's going to a ball game but instead finds himself undergoing a weird physical change that compels him to kill various members of the cast and suffer his head expanding in all manner of directions. As the bodies pile up, 'ol Mikey feels a compulsion to return to that very same area in Mississippi, while his desperate parents struggle to understand why he's eating folk and somebody is standing behind him with straws and a condom blowing up his forehead like a balloon.

The screenplay by the excellent Tom ('Fright Night') Holland and based upon a novel by Edward Levy is quite bonkers, but more frustratingly is also quite boring as well. I'm not sure if studio intervention had anything to do with it, but the movie is a very dull affair with people doing stupid things in order to get to the overblown, mega FX laden finale which does little to save the proceeding 70+ minutes. Granted, director Phillipe (hey, I ruined 'The Howling' franchise) Mora and cinematographer Jack L.

The Beast Within came at a time where the werwolf movie was all the rage, and the likes of AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON and THE HOWLING meant that this little monster got forgotten about somewhere along the line. Now The Beast Within is far from perfect, badly edited at times, some lulls and almost laughable content that is not intentional. Paul Clemens who plays the teenage werewolf isn't that striking as an actor and doesn't add any special to his character. His mother played by the usually good Bibi Besch just isn't horror film material and it feels she didn't get the genre she was playing in. But there are still standout actors here. Ronny Cox steals the show as the sons worried dad frantically trying to find out why his son is ill and retracing his steps. The lovable LQ Jones plays the sheriff, like he was born to play sheriffs and Don Gordon is great as the slimeball judge in small town America.

The Beast Within doesn't always feel like a straight werewolf movie and actually has hints of Dr Jekyll and Hyde and or a possession type film. The movie seems open ended but a sequel never followed. Oh and watch out for the finale transformation scene it may not be the best you've ever seen but it is fairly disgusting. All in all The Beast Within is a little silly but pulls it all off with some memorable performances, and hardly a dull moment to be had.
