Product Description

Matt Masters (John Wayne) is a circus owner who has to start from scratch when his ship sinks in the Barcelona harbour. Starting up a Wild West act, he takes under his wing Toni Alfredo (Claudio Cardinale), a trapeze artist whose mother Lili (Rita Hayworth) has abandoned her. Seeking Lili out in a Hamburg bar, Masters obtains her a job in the circus anonymously, so that she can get to know her daughter.

Worth the wait....very clean transfer from Technicolor's good looking 8 perf 35mm Technirama negative. The sound track is good except for the music over the intermission card - sounds like it came from someone's ageing cassette recorder!

Not the best of Bronston's epics but it has a tidy story and it moves along. Good movie for a Saturday night around the fire. Do try the DTS Master audio.....the stereo track once again reminds me of a very old cassette recording.

Circus Owner 'Matt Masters' (John Wayne) who often reflects on the past decides to take his show to Europe,
his 'Charge' 'Toni'(Claudia Cardinale) along with long time friend 'Cap Carson' (Lloyd Nolan) and unofficial
boyfriend to 'Toni' 'Steve' (John Smith) and the troop.
'Matt' knows 'Toni's' mother 'Lily'(Rita Hayworth) who had left after her husband died after a fall during their high-wire
display some 14 years or so back, because of her love for another man, she blamed herself for his death. lives somewhere
in Europe, he harbours the hope that they will meet and rekindle what had been lost.
Disaster strikes the Circus-Troop, when, in dock the ship carrying everything they own captsizes, they've lost everything.
'Matt' decides tto sign up and tour with a rival-circus outfit 'Purdy's', they need the income if the troop are ever going
to start over again.
'Matt has already set about trying to tempt the best acts of his rivals Circus to join him when he's ready to start over.
'Matt' still misses his long-lost love 'Lily' and whist on tour try's to seek her out, however her curiosity regarding her
daughter she'd not seen for so long draws her to them.
Will it be a happy reunion ? How will 'Matt' explain things to 'Toni' who he'd brought up as his own these long years.
The search for lost love along with plenty of Circus action with the traditional mix of 'Animal Trainers' 'Clowns' 'High-Wire'
and 'Wild-West displays..........a 'John Wayne' treat from yester-year.
A glorious spectacle that harbours many well-known stars from back-when.
The upgrade to Blu-ray for this 1964 movie is really pretty-good, and yes, it does include the intermission the DVD version
apparently hasn't got.........(back then the intermission was either an Ice-Cream or even a call of nature break)

A truly great release of, in my opinion, a very underrated John Wayne non western.
Do not be put off by the low reviews for this Dutch release, they mostly relate to the first French release of Circus World on blu ray (red cover) which had fixed subtitles you could not switch off when selecting the English audio. This release has no such issues.
The transfer is nothing short of amazing, it almost looks 3D! What could be better than to see Duke, the spectacular set pieces and Claudia Cardinale in superb 16:9 hi definition! The film also has the opening song intact and the intermission also makes an appearance, which it does not on the Italian blu ray version. The sound may not be 5.1 or stereo but the blu rays I own that have been given the 5.1 treatment genuinely offer no more than the mono soundtracks apart from the odd special effect in the surround speakers. All in all a wonderful package and better than quite a few Duke blu rays.

While the picture quality of this disc is fine (as far as it goes), the film is a shortened version of the original. No overture or intermission. Originally released in 70mm and 6-track stereo sound, this disc is MONO! The British title of this film was "The Magnificent Showman" - this version is certainly not magnificent.Circus World [1964] (REGION 2) (PAL) [Dutch Import]

This has been available for a few years, but only with very average video and audio. Not Bronston's best film, but nicely restored to excellent video and 5.1 audio.

This review is for the ANCHOR BAY 2014 release. Amazon and the DVD cover state the ratio as 16.9. I am no expert and admit to confusion over all the different "ratios", but this version is proper Panavision with bars top and bottom, and an excellent transfer it is too. Terrific colour, clear picture and sound. No subs or extras. The film is good fun and a must for Wayne fans, with Claudia Cardinale stealing every scene she is in (and that's a lot). Massive stunts and spectacle and, for those who still enjoy circus acts...Plenty of that too. I thoroughly enjoyed this film, and it DOES have the "Intermission"! It's long (134') but good for all the family, if the younger ones can stay still for that length of time.

FILM FACT: Awards and Nominations: 1965 Golden Globe® Awards: Win: Best Song in a Motion Picture for Dimitri Tiomkin (music) and Best Song “Circus World” for Ned Washington (lyrics). Nominated: Best Motion Picture Actress in a Drama for Rita Hayworth. 1965 Golden Laurel Awards: Nominated: Action Performance for John Wayne. While filming a scene where the main tent catches fire, John Wayne was almost killed when the set collapsed. As he was "fighting" the fire, Wayne was to be cued by the assistant director when to leave before the set was to collapse in flames. Either John Wayne didn't hear the cue, or the a.d. mistimed it (it was never determined which), but the flaming set began to collapse before John Wayne got out. He escaped with just a few seconds to spare before the entire set would have fallen down on top of him. While the film is taking place in 1901, there are several mistakes with the European flags. One example is the Finnish flag that is seen in the movie.
