Coughed up and spat out by an outrageously oversized CGI dinosaur (fortunately, while protected by the TARDIS) wasn't the most auspicious way for the latest incarnation of the Doctor to make his arrival, yet when the blue door opened all was well.

Peter Capaldi seized the attention from his first scene in `Deep Breath...' and emphatically is The Doctor, growing in his opening story from despairing fragility and memory loss back into the heroic Time Lord who has lived a dozen lives and has memories he might want to forget. He went on to a series of superb performances in every episode, mixing action with humour and the darker, truly alien side of the Doctor as displayed in many of his incarnations right back to the First. A 5* new Doctor without a doubt.

Clara provides him with an interesting companion who has her own life to lead but just can't give up on the thrill of travels in the TARDIS. Jenna Coleman plays the role excellently, at times as quite a traditional companion, then occasionally taking the lead in a reversal of roles. This was sometimes very successful, as in `Flatline', while in other episodes like `Kill the Moon' I felt the Doctor should have been given more prominence.

In her life on Earth, Clara swaps alien monsters for the duties of a teacher at Coal Hill School and romance with ex-soldier Danny Pink. Personally I thought these elements were the weaker parts of the series and lead to some of the least successful episodes, although `Listen', which involved the future and past of Clara and Danny, was extremely good.

OK of the 12 episodes, I've really enjoyed 10, and at least 6 have been superb.

Peter Capaldi's acting is excellent, he knocks Matt Smith and even David Tennant's acting out of the ballpark, and Jenna Coleman and Samuel Anderson have been great as well.

Only two episodes I didn't like were In The Forest Of The Night and Kill The Moon which started off brilliantly but the ending? WHATTTT???? I won't spoil it for anybody who hasn't seen it yet. Very very poor writing that held so much promise at the start. OK it is Sci-Fi but it should at least be scientifically plausible. Do we want kids today to get their understanding of science from the Harry Potter school of mystic mumbo jumbo or at least teach them the basic rudiments of what is physically and scientifically plausible?

Into The Dalek, Listen, Time Heist, Dark Water, Mummy On The Orient Express and FlatLine on the other hand were all very very good and the last two at least had some basic science in them - Jamie Matheson is a new writer to Doctor Who and definetly one to watch. Please let him write next year as well!

Oh, and don't let Frank Cottrell Boyce write another episode - bring back Neil Gaiman and Mark Gatiss again and make the episodes darker, more adult and SCARY!

The BBC did their usual superb job on the extras, so only docking one star for two sub par episodes - must do better next time.

Still highly recommended, I look forward to Capaldi's second year, I'm sure it'll be even better.

I was never much of a fan of the Matt Smith era all that much. Series 5 was good enough but the rest of his era was horrible and disappointing beyond belief. When Smith left, I was hoping Moffat would go with him. However, this year with the absolutely spectacular Peter Capaldi taking over as the Doctor (and what a brilliant Doctor he is, possibly the best yet!) Moffat has somehow pulled it together to make this series absolutely spectacular:

Deep Breath: A strong debut for Capaldi. As with most of the new Doctor stories, it doesn't have the best plot, but in terms of introducing the new Doctor and giving Clara some much needed growth as a character, it succeeds- 7/10

Into The Dalek: As a Dalek episode, it feels kind of stale and weak and to me came across as quite rushed, but is overall enjoyable and at least comes up with a fresh idea- 7/10

Robot Of Sherwood: Easily the worst episode of the season. It felt like a really weak Matt Smith story, Capaldi was out of character and the plot was just a total mess. Not all that good, really- 4/10

Listen: An absolute instant classic from Steven Moffat, with lots of creepy moments, humour, a beautiful and original ending, fine performances and a brilliant concept and moral- 10/10

Time Heist: A surprisingly great episode from Steve Thompson. Very clever, enjoyable and with a great concept- 8/10

The Caretaker: Hugely enjoyable comedy episode with a lot of character development for Clara and Danny. Some things didn't quite work, and there wasn't much of a plot, but definitely a success- 8/10

Kill The Moon: Definitely one of the most controversial and divisive episodes in the shows entire history. Some loved it and some despised it. I absolutely loved it!
