Product Description

Product Description

Ian Hendry, June Ritchie, John Hurt and future Randall and Hopkirk stars Annette André and Mike Pratt feature among an outstanding cast in this mid-sixties realist drama from noted director Sidney Hayers. This Is My Street is presented here in a brand-new transfer from the original film elements in its as-exhibited theatrical aspect ratio.

Jubilee Close, a drab street of decaying houses in London's Battersea, is home to a cross-section of working-class families. Yearning to escape from this depressing environment is the pretty, ambitious Margery Graham; the victim of an enforced marriage, she is tied to a lazy, boorish husband and young daughter. Margery lives next door to her widowed mother who, in order to make ends meet, has taken in a lodger, Harry a slick, unscrupulous salesman with a roving eye and a more-than-neighbourly interest in Margery...

The edition issued in 2014 by Network has been nicely restored. In many ways the film typifies British contemporary films of the 1960s. The late Ian Hendry plays a louse who leads a young married woman astray; Manchester girl June Ritchie plays the woman in question. The director of ‘This Is My Street’ is Sidney Hayers who went on to work in TV series such as ‘The Avengers’. The DVD is in a slim case, about half the standard width. All in all, an interesting release sure to please what seems to be a growing army of Britfilm fans.

Network have again release a long lost film of some worth, in excellent condition. Crisp B/W print and good sound, Ratio 1.66. Extras include a theatrical trailer Image Gallery and Original Pressbook PDF (not seen by me). The film is very much of it's time - A bit kitchen sink tho perhaps not up to "Poor Cow"/Sat Nt and Sun Morning", but very like "Live Now Pay Later. June Ritchie, who gives what I felt was a career best performence,( but that's just me) plays a bored housewife-bored with her job, husband and much of life in general. Hendry is th salesman, slick and a womaniser, but not "the marrying Kind". This kind of role he could play in his sleep and here is utterly convincing. The sexual tension between him and Ritchie is palpable, and strong whilst not explicit. Annette Andre gives a strong performence as June's sister, and also in the cast is a very young John Hurt (miscast I feel as a boy no girl wants anything to do with, and he, as my wife said, was very sexy in 1963.). All in all it's 90 mins of good script, direction and acting, with some interesting location work. One sequence sticks in my mind-Ian and June search a junkyard/bombsite for her daughter, and all around them are local almost feral kids breaking bottles and generally having a ball, but it's scary. For lovers of sixties realist drama this is a must. (Oh and a word of praise for Mike Pratt as June's husband-so easy to overplay - but he, like everyone else is just right. Well done Network.

Watching this brings home the force of Philip Larkin's line "Sexual intercourse began in 1963" - a British film that deals so frankly with adultery, desire (especially female desire) and casual pickups just wouldn't have reached the screen a few short years earlier. Sociology aside, it's a cracking piece of entertainment with a story that flies along, a great cast, and a superb central performance by June Ritchie.

I came across this film by accident while searching Amazon for another DVD. I read the description and reviews and decided to buy it.
It's an excellent film. with a good story that's well acted by a great cast. It holds your interest from start to finish and contains great location shots that remind you of the famous retail chains that have vanished from our high streets long ago.
High quality reproduction throughout ,which can be enhanced even further when played on a Blu ray that upgrades DVD reproduction by adding greater depth and detail.
A great buy.

This film has been on my wish list for so many years and now I am a very proud owner as I appear at the begining of the film with my sister and mother. We were all young of course as the film was made in the 1960s, but you can see us clearly, especially me, I am the little girl in white dress with a big comb whom June Ritchie walks past in the title credits, I walk up and down the street, so you can see my face and I seem to be doing a little dance.

As for the rest of the film that is also brilliant as it brings back memories of living around the Battersea and Clapham area in the 1960s, remembering streets, etc that has changed so much since then. It is also nice to share my mother's memories of the film being made as I was too young to remember, like Ian Hendry buying the children, including me and my sister, ice creams, Mike Pratt cadging cigarettes off the residents and me being cuddled by some of the stars.

Just brilliant!

If you like nostalgic old 60s movies with a storyline, good movie. Ian Hendry was box office in the early 60s and it is a shame he didn't really get the recognition deserved. Other good films of the time are 'The Servant', 'A kind of Loving', 'Live now pay later', 'Saturday Night and Sunday Morning', and 'The Lonliness of the long distance Runner', 'Billy Liar' and 'Otley' to name a few.
