Oh f%^&! That was my bona fide reaction to the final scene, and I'm pretty sure it will also be yours as long as you go into this film with no outside knowledge about what happens. I laughed off this film's claim to offer "the most shocking climax in the history of American cinema," but I'm here to tell you these guys were serious - and they deliver the goods. This may or may not be the most shocking ending of all time, but I'm here to tell you that it's way up there on the list. Up until that point, this was just a slightly better than average slasher, but now I want to out and shout "Sleepaway Camp" from the rooftops. It has been so long since any slasher offered me even the smallest of surprises, then here comes along this cult classic from 1983 to totally blow me away. If you have even the smallest iota of interest in horror films, you simply must watch Sleepaway Camp.

What parent wouldn't want to send their little angel to Camp Arawak? The guy who runs the place is a dirty old man, the head cook's a pedophile, and the counselors are worse than the kids. Here, your child can take part in water balloon fights atop a sloping roof, wander out into the lake to skinny dip or dump his canoe passengers any time night or day, and be as mean to the other kids as he wants. Yep, this is a great place for kids to go camping. One kid who does not enjoy the experience, however, is Angela (Felissa Rose), who is sent there along with her cousin Ricky (Jonathan Tiersten) by Aunt Martha. Martha is a strange one; she looks weird, she talks weird, and she's completely loony tunes - but she has been Angela's guardian ever since a tragic boating accident made her an orphan. It's no wonder - after all she's been through - that Angela is shy and withdrawn among the other kids at Camp Arawak.

An almost definitive example of a 'cult' film. A really strange kind of a Friday the 13th homoerotic hybrid for teens, middle-aged gay men and fans of quirky, quite bad, low budget horrors.
The main thrust of the film involves a number of slayings at an adolescent camp where 'Angela' a disturbed young girl is staying with her far more socially adjusted cousin 'Ricky' All the individuals killed, staff and residents have in some way crossed or slighted the strange 'Angela' and the increasing body count by all accounts is not enough to warrant the closure of or withdrawal of most of the kids staying at the camp.
The killings are very tamely handled and much of the murder act is not seen, with close ups of legs or in shadow etc. The special effects are inconsistent with the act perpetrated so that the fellow attacked by a handful of bees in the toilet who couldn't break a thin stick locking the toilet door looked as if he had the bubonic plague as he lay dead on the bathroom floor; in comparison they could have gone to town a little more on the paedophilic chef who was scalded all over but just had slight blistering. Anyway these incidents were put down to accidents and high jinks and didn't impact upon the daily camp activities.
The acting is bound to be slated, in fact the young actress playing Angela was cast due to impressing at her auction with her ability to eat a chocolate bar whilst gazing into space, but I didn't think it was that bad at all and complimented the film anyway.
The ending was hmmmm. I did laugh a little once it occurred to me what was actually going on. It's a bit of cult cinematic viewing that may well have disappeared out of sight but maybe deserves to have established itself within the niche circle of admirers it has obtained, in the US particularly where summer camps are a cultural norm.

Classic 80's horror slasher with ample nudity. The film has a number of classic lines along with the great "Happy Camper" song.

"Say No to Drugs."

"Nice girls don't have to show it off."

"Party hats at 2 o'clock."

"I would rather die first."

"What are you looking for a gun?...No a drill."

"Dead teenager's brains."

"Cute, but the blood looks like ketchup."

"I didn't want some crazy person to attack me."

Our killer has personality and a sense of humor. The film plays on the classic slasher theme that sex kills teenagers. You don't want to get sent home.

Available for free uncensored viewing at Viewstar with commercials.

The Sleepaway camp films came around during the golden age of slasher films. They have that retro 80's feel about them and are considerably better than some slasher fare from that decade. Anchor Bay did a great job with this boxset, the packaging also looks nice with the fake blood. This trilogy of fun 80's slasher films is definitely worth checking out as it's packed with extras and it also comes with a nice booklet.

Robert Hiltzik's "Sleepaway Camp" is one of the most memorable slasher movies ever made. Of course the acting and dialogue are terrible, but writer/director Robert Hiltzik manages to create very creepy atmosphere throughout, the killings are original and gruesome and the ending is very shocking and twisted. Felissa Rose is marvelous as Angela, especially with her creepy stare. The story begins with a boating accident which kills the main character Angela's father and brother. We then move forward in time, now 13 year old Angela is living with her crazy Aunt Martha and her cousin Ricky.

Angela and Ricky then go to camp and it is Angela's first time going but Rickey has been there before. Angela doesn't get along with the other campers and is very quiet. A series of murders begin and it is a mystery who is killing all these people. This is 80's slasher Cheese at it's finest! with one of the creepiest and weirdest endings ever! DVD extras:- Audio commentary with director Robert Hiltzik and Felissa Rose, deleted scenes and a trailer. The picture for all the films were great and is in widescreen (1.85:1).

As the first film had a cult following, it was almost inevitable that it would have a sequel.
