Having owned Arrow's original Blu-ray release and being very disappointed I am glad to see that the steelbook version (currently a Zavvi exclusive) is taken from a new master and looks a hell of a lot better. Where the old version was soft and hazy, this is sharp and detailed. I've heard a lot of people saying that Arrow's first release doesn't look that bad. They're wrong, it does. Regardless of the indignant apologists, it was smothered by DNR and then artificially sharpened. Arrow should have done the decent thing and offered to send this remastered version to people who had purchased the original Blu-ray.

Tenebrae blu-ray Steel book (limited edition)

Never write reviews but felt compelled. Just a quick affirmation of what other reviewers seem to be saying about last year's Arrow Steel-book release.

Yes,it is better than Arrow's previous standard blu-ray release, and very briefly here's why

I'm no expert on all things HD, only a big Argento fan, so i had previously been quite happy with my standard Arrow blu-ray. However, after buying the steel-book release and comparing the two, the differences are obvious.

Played back to back, i immediately noticed that the old standard blu-ray seemed extremely bright, washed out and fizzy.

In comparison, the new steel-book edition transfer(which seems to be taken from a different source because the titles and the book 'Tenebrae' are both in Italian, rather than English),somehow manages to look bolder, deeper and richer in color than it's predecessor.

All told, it's a sometimes subtle but overall considerable improvement on what has gone before.

The presentation of the steel-book packaging is much better too, from the prints on the discs, through to the lavish color booklet and the elegantly simple poster art on the front of the case in pleasing matte black finish. Surely a thing of beauty in and of itself.

... the guy responsible for Arrow's in house cover art is thankfully nowhere to be seen on this release.

This review is for the steelbook edition. I absolutely love this film, in my opinion its right up there with Dario's Suspiria & Deep Red.
Like most of Dario Argento fans I own the previous Arrow blu ray which didn't look too bad & I thought, given the age of the movie, the picture quality was probably as good as we would ever see. I was very reluctant to spend more money on buying it again but the steelbook looked so lovely I decided to take the plunge.
All I can say is WOW!! Picture quality in the steelbook edition is stunning, a huge upgrade over the original. Detail is much improved & the colours really pop. Nobody has ever photographed a movie quite like Dario Argento & the picture quality on offer here allows us to appreciate his genius in all its glory.
We've all been burnt before in buying so called upgrades but please don't hesitate in this case. The improvement in picture quality is huge & oh yes, the steelbook is quite beautiful as well!

Flawed genius................. There is no question that Dario Argento's body of work has seriously declined in both substance and style in the last two decades and in many respects Tenebrae is probably his last great work. Yes the dialogue is clunky, yes the plot is flawed and yes the acting somewhat questionable....but that's not the point. Style over substance may not always work, but Argento does it better than most. A return away from the supernatural giallo genre, this is pure and simple 'annihilation'. Marvellous set pieces, a sublime Simonetti score makes this my person favourite in the Argento cannon. Not for the faint hearted and far from politically correct......but forget all that this was the early 80's after all and style is king.

Truly this is one of Argento's greatest movies, a brilliant murder mystery thriller with a great story that leaves you wondering and genuinely thrilled throughout, great cast and amazing music score, the movie has plenty of Argento's signature violence and bloody gore, a must for fans of his work and new comers alike to old school movies, this arrow release is amazing on Blu-ray, brilliant picture, tons of special features and a nice book of info. If you buy the steelbook edition its very nice, a collectors item indeed.
