Film within a film, undertaken in France in the 1960's, based on a crime writer visualising the scenes on a train which then become ever more real in the external world. Within the film, there is the growing muscle of the main character, who then acts out his fantasies with a woman he meets on the street. She is an up market street seller of her body, and here the sexual fantasy is played out relentlessly.

Ultimately the film is an exploration of what takes place within the head, with a little stimulus from the external world.

During this era there appears to be an obsession with beautiful women being placed in chains along with layers of intrigue. The director aims to reveal why these themes strike the human heart and head and groin - so well.

The film is about that journey from Paris to Antwerp to discover the secret to these inner mysteries. It is the external world which colonises the internal world which appears to be the message and ultimately it is a game, which has no meaning other than what we apply to it....but there again yours may be different.

***THIS REVIEW IS FOR THE REGION A REDEMPTION RELEASE!******

Alain Robbes-Grillet and his team board the Trans-Europe Express. They sit down and begin to formulate ideas for a crime film about a smuggler transporting cocaine to Antwerp aboard the same train. The narrative of the smuggler, played by Jean-louis Trintignant begins and repeats some of what has just happened and overlaps with the 'real' story as he wanders into the carriage and the director observes Trintignant. This set the tone for the whole of the rest of the film as Grillet and his team discuss the narrative that is unfolding as it unfolds, backtracking and correcting things that make no sense. As a result character motivations and behaviour are fluid throughout the narrative. All the while the film is peppered with sadean imagery that seems to be one of the directors major preoccupations.

Trans-Europe express is an almost perfect dissection of the crime genre and a much better comment on the perils of film making than any of his new-wave contemporaries. Simply put, this is a brilliant piece of cinema. Grillet's work seems to have been hard to come by for a long while now and I'm only just beginning to discover his work. As you can probably guess, I like what i'm seeing!

Sadly this releases is region locked to A so many uk players will not run it. Thankfully the BFI are close to releasing a box set in the uk with more bonus features including a Tim Lucas commentary fans. I have these redemption releases because of the numbered spines but I would reccomend UK and European fans to wait for the BFI release.

A genuine classic, as so many good films are based on a train, in this case a Trans Europ Express from Gare Du Nord to Antwerpen Central. For me the real gem of this film were the shots of Antwerpen Central as I remembered it before the massive rebuild it went through. The concept of a discussing a film project whilst on the train and having scenes enacted is ingenious and very cleverly done. If you are fan of French crime genre films then this a must for you.

Star rating is for the product , not the film , which is advertised as containing two DVDs but the package contains only one . There are no English subtitles ,either.
