Product Description

Product Description

Hell Bent for Leather is a standard western that features Audie Murphy in the role of Clay, a cowboy hunted by a posse out for blood. Clay deals and trade in horses in an honest way, and he does not suspect that a crooked U.S. Marshal (Stephen McNally) interested in furthering his career, is determined to nab him as a killer though he knows full well Clay is innocent. When first attacked, Clay grabs a hostage (Felicia Farr) who eventually sides with him and helps him in the long chase that follows. Clay's challenge is not only to get away from the Marshal and his posse but to somehow prove his innocence as well. Murphy, the most decorated soldier in World War II was still riding the popularity of his own real-life story in 1955's To Hell and Back when this western was released.

About the Director

Clay Santell (Audie Murphy) an honest horse trader stops in the town of Sutterville after having a horse stolen. He is mistaken by townspeople for a notorious murderer named Travers. The townspeople capture Clay and turn him over to lawman Harry Deckett (Stephen McNally).

The egotistical and crooked Marshall Deckett, tired of chasing the real Travers, is out to gain personal glory even if it means capturing and punishing the wrong man.

Clay escapes from Deckett, taking the lovely Janet Gifford (Felicia Farr) hostage in the process. Janet comes to believe his story and helps him in his struggle to prove his real identity.

Will Clay get away from the corrupt and self-serving Marshall Deckett? Will Clay be able to prove his innocence?

I have little to add to Spike Owens excellent review of the film, except that the new DVD release of "Hell Bent For Leather", released today by 101 is an excellent transfer picture and sound wise and, despite what it says on the DVD box, it isn't 4 x 3, it's 2.35:1 CinemaScope and is anamorphically enhanced for 16 x 9 computers and televisions. I highly recommend it.

Low down miserable scratch of a deputy sheriff like you.

Hell Bent for Leather is directed by George Sherman and adapted to screenplay by Christopher Knopf from the novel Outlaw Marshal written by Ray Hogan. It stars Audie Murphy, Felicia Farr, Stephen McNally and Robert Middleton. A CinemaScope production in Eastman Color, it features music jointly scored by William Lava and Irving Gertz (Joseph Gershenson supervising) and cinematography by Clifford Stine.

Audie Murphy plays Clay Santell, a horse trader who is wrongly accused of murder and goes on the run pursued by a vengeful Marshal. The Marshal (McNally), knows Santell is innocent, but he doesn't care and figures that killing a wanted man that nobody has seen before can only earn him glory.

There is often a tendency from Western film critics to undersell a "B" Western, it's like you are not allowed to rave about or rate a "B" the same as an Oater from the well regarded and well known movers and shakers in the genre. This happens to be more the case where Audie Murphy's output is concerned. Not blessed with great acting talent, Murphy none the less knew how to make a scene work, to imbue a passage of play with great presence, never once trying to hog the limelight from co-stars, he remains more so today a Western star whose values should not be easily dismissed. His CV contains quite a few bad or ordinary films, but he was in some very good ones as well, and one such film is Hell Bent for Leather.

Plot is essentially standard fare, a wronged man is on the run and he is saddled with a pretty gal for the journey. Posse are in pursuit and wronged man has to prove his innocence before he is killed by a sadistic sheriff out to feather his own nest.

This is the first film/DVD I have bought from 101 as I was nervous about whether it would be the correct ratio. No need to worry! An excellent 2.35 transfer, lovely colour, clear picture and good sound. No extras or Subs., and maybe just a wee bit expensive? The film is a typical Universal Murphy western. Which means with all the backing of a well practiced group of western film makers this lets no one down. A good cast including the wonderful underused Felicia Farr, the incomparable Robert Middleton and Stephen McNally and directed if a teeny bit meanderingly by old pro George Sherman. "Rocky" Lane is in it too. I love it and recomend it (if such recomendation is really necessary) to all Murphy and western fans.
