*****THIS REVIEW IS FOR MANIAC COP 2 ON BLU-RAY!!!******

Officer Matt Cordell returns in a sequel that while shot a few years after the original, ties things together neatly. This time its up to a maverick detective played by Robert Davi and a police psychologist played by Claudia Christian to stop the Maniac Cops rampage.

The Beauty of the Maniac Cop franchise is that while essentially a slasher film, there is a lot more going on in each film than in your average Friday the 13th or Halloween. This is very much down to Larry Cohen's excellent writing and William Lustigs direction. The sub plot of the serial killer who becomes enamored with Cordell's undead officer and the surprise twist near the beginning (which I won't reveal for anyone unfamiliar with the film) help the film stand out from the crowd. Also director Lustig's ability to attract excellent character actors to his projects also lends the film added gravitas. Maniac Cop 2 may be a B movie, but its a well shot, well written B movie that's an awful lot of fun. If you haven't seen the first Maniac Cop I would recommend picking that up and watching it first though. Maniac Cop [Blu-ray] the Arrow release of the first movie looks fantastic and it's best to watch this franchise in sequence in my opinion.

The transfer here looks fantastic. The film had been stuck in something of a legal limbo for years, fans reliant on the slightly trimmed poor quality DVD releases previously available. On Blu the film has NEVER looked better. The colors are vivid, especially the neon red in Leo Rossi's serial killers apartment.

Well, it left the possibility of a sequel at the end of of the first one, so here's where the body count stacks up even more!!! Matt Cordell is back from the dead to reign his brand of justice. No chance of parole, or time served!! Just a swift, brutal execution his way!!! If you loved the first, then you will enjoy this one. The dvd is full screen, what an injustice as this was shot in the widescreen format, two trailers & a scene gallery. We can only hope that very soon a brand new release the way we like it!!! Non-stop thrills , enjoy!!!!

I just watched 'Maniac Cop 2' for the first time in about 10 years and I must say, it was pretty good!. I'm a big Bruce Campbell fan, and like the first film a lot. I could remember little bits of the film since I last saw it, but was thinking it's still probably won't be as good after all these years, but I was wrong. A pretty good cast. Robert Davi, Claudia Christian (whom I saw at a convention in 1999, and she looked even more stunning in real life,in a beautiful blue suit), Leo Rossi and many others.
I definitely recommend this movie to all the fans and just horror fans in general-A must see!

I've never gotten along with the original Maniac Cop despite the fact that it contained some of my favourite actors, so I remember not rushing in to see the sequel.

However Maniac Cop 2 for me was pretty fantastic, in a sense of the genre. For me here we have a more fulfilling story, juicier characters and some outstanding directing from William Lustig. I read somewhere that Lustig considers this his best techinally directed film and you can see why.

Robert Z'Dar returns as the 'maniac cop', dispatching who he must whilst trying to clear his original conviction, and he teams up with a New York serial killer played by Leo Rossi.

It's great to see the return of both Robert Davi and Bruce Campbell, and with a Larry Cohen written story this film really is an enjoyable sequel. It may come under the horror banner, but I found the movie to be more of an action one. I was stunned to find out the film cost only 4m to make- Lustig has made good use of that money. And look out for many classic shots of New York 89/90 style.

Maniac Cop 2 is a real surprise then. Is it better than the original? Hard to say, I'll have to go and give the original another chance. Either way Part 2 is worth a watch.

The maniac cop trilogy is an awesome set of films and has to be in your 80's - 90's horror collection, maniac cop 2 pretty much continues on from the original, we say goodbye to a few main stars and some new ones are introduced, the story is great, plenty of action and cool kills, this new blue underground Blu-ray version is awesome, very royal treatment for an old film like this, amazing picture quality like watching a modern movie, tons of features to watch and a cool slip case too with great art, this is a quality pick up if you don't have it, or even worth the upgrade if you do already have it.
The Blu-ray is region FREE!! the DVD is R1.

Lustig made his horror debut with the sensational exploitation film Maniac in 1980. Lustig also followed this with a low budget revenge film Vigilante before directing the genre classic Maniac Cop in 1988, which was written by Larry Cohen of It's Alive fame. After a number of fun but unmemorable action vehicles, Lustig returned to direct Maniac Cop 2, a brilliant and enjoyable horror sequel that resurrects the Maniac Cop for some more slaughter. Maniac Cop 2 picks up a couple of minutes before the original ended, with the Cop himself, skewered in the chest and in a van moving at high speed, driving off a Marina into what would appear to be a watery grave. Only thing is, the Maniac Cop survived and now he has a purpose - to kill those who murdered him and he gets some help from a deranged serial killer who has been targeting strippers. For fans of Lustig, the Maniac Cop franchise or action/horror in general, this is a must see. Robert Davi (the villain from License to Kill) stars as the detective after the Maniac Cop, and Claudia Christian plays Susan, a police psychologist who begins to question her own sanity after seeing Cordell in action. Also making a relatively short appearance is Bruce Campbell and Danny Trijo as a convict. In my honest opinion this sequel was way better than the first film, it certainly ups the action sequences. Of special mention there is a truly superbly staged assault on a police station when Cordell crashes in (literally!) to liberate a deranged serial killer whom he has formed an acquaintanceship with. This scene easily surpasses the very similar sequence from The Terminator when big Arnie performs his own inimitable attack on the police station in that movie.Read more ›
