Product Description

Danny Dyer & Tamer Hassan return to form in the Special Edition Director s Cut of City Run. Over the course of one day in London s gritty East End, the paths of eight characters collide in ways that change their lives forever. Their stories are blended Pulp Fiction style, against the backdrop of London s dark and twisted underbelly. Dyer and Hassan give career-best performance in their first collaboration since British Gangster film The Business.

After seeing this film being touted as 'the British gangster film of the year' in the trailer, I was expecting City Rats to be something similar to what I had seen in, for example, The Football Factory.

Nothing can be further from the truth. This isn't a gangster flick; this is a drama with various interlinking plots, showing us the lives and struggles of eight different people. The way that the different stories intertwine can feel a little disjointed at times, but overall it is pretty good. Everyone in City Rats does a fine job. I was particularly impressed with Danny Dyer; he is in a role you would probably expect him to be in, playing an ex-con who is drawn back into the world of crime, but he does this well. There is also a sense of fragility which I didn't think would be possible for him.

However, in my eyes, the star of the show has to be Tamer Hassan. Playing Jim, a suicidal divorcee, he drops melons from a rooftop to calculate the best way to jump off when he sees someone else (Sammy) on an adjacent roof. After talking her down, they strike up a friendship and try to find another way. After seeing him play an aggressive, coked-up hooligan in Football Factory, I was amazed after seeing this vulnerable performance.

There is a rather sombre atmosphere throughout the film, which is rather effective, and this is also evident in the soundtrack, which is beautiful and heightens the sense of loneliness.

Overall, whilst this wasn't perfect by any means, it was a good film which I enjoyed watching.

This 2009 social drama follows 8 disparate people in London as they cross paths, each seeking solutions to their individual problems, but will any overcome them, or succumb to them?
With characters as diverse as an ex nurse bag lady to a phone sex worker and a possible murderer, this has plenty of interesting themes and some very dark humour. Similar in approach to ‘Crash’, this is far more earthy and real, concentrating of the troubled lower end of the social scale, not the well heeled or job secure of LA. These are people with real issues that have stunted their lives but their connections are all revealed by the end. It is well acted, especially by Danny Dyer [I’m not usually a fan] and Susan Lynch [Beautiful Creatures] and well filmed throughout
The single disc offers play, scene selection, audio [5.1/2.0] and special features [making of, deleted scenes].
With swearing, sex and nudity from the start, frank adult talk discussing everything from sexual identity, suicide, domestic violence, prostitution, homosexuality, creative block, drugs and murder, this is not for the feint hearted. This is not an adventure movie, it’s an ambling, meandering tale, but if you want a good social drama [miles better then the single focus ‘Crash’] then this will do it, although overall this is quite melancholy, I did find it engrossing. So what’s in the suitcase –I’m not saying.

City Rats is not quite the film I was expecting after seeing the DVD cover, but it is still a great independent British movie that works on so many levels.

The film follows a group of separate characters over the course of one day as they all come to terms with key moments in each of their lives (a wannabe suicide, a lonely prostitute, a man trying to escape his gangster background etc). The story lines are all very engaging, and the acting is first-rate throughout, especially from Danny Dyer who shines in a role that doesn't exactly show him in the most sympathetic light.

If you're in the mood for a fresh, thoughtful and intelligent new Brit-flick, this is the one for you...

I went into this with quite low expectations after seeing all the one star reviews so was surprised at how moving I found it. I found it exceptionally well acted throughout and I really engaged with the characters. I can understand how some would be disappointed if they were expecting a fast paced, violent gangster flick but this is so much more intelligent and emotive than that. Time well spent!

If you are expecting The Business and want to sit back and be carried along then you would be disappointed - if however you are expecting an intelligent multi layered film that you have to think about and watch the threads come together or unwind with Danny and Tamar using method acting to a degree never seen before you will love it. If you are a fan of Danny Dyer or Tamar it will reinforce your opinion. Great, difficult, performances from Susan Lynch, Myanna Burring and Ray Panthaki. This is one you can watch several times to catch the detail you may have missed the first time round.

A serious study with a hint of humour, pathing city life with the raw edges left intact. The pace of the story kept the viewer enthaled, and the ending was happy but in a dark way, but this suited the whole style of the film.
