As members of the feminist art collective Pussy Riot, three women performed a 40 second "punk prayer" inside Russia's main cathedral. This performance led to their arrest on charges of religious hatred and culminated in a trial that has reverberated around the world and transformed the face of Russian society forever.

Filmed over the course of six months, Oscar-nominated director Mike Lerner and Maxim Pozdorovkin grant us unparalleled access and exclusive footage of the incredible three women, Nadia, Masha and Katia, behind their now-famous colourful balaclavas. As they defend their convictions from within a cage in the courtroom, we learn from their family and friends what transformed these women from political activists into modern day icons.

It's a riot. Buy it and see the hypocrisy that looms (government, religion etcetera) whenever anyone attacks the system, albeit in Pussy Riot's case, rather naively. The girls acquit themselves remarkably in the scary situation the find themselves in; they are intelligent and appear very nice girls as opposed to the cretins in the court, the sanctimonious public outcry of outraged so called 'decent citizens,' and factions of the Russian Orthodox church who come across as perfectly ridiculous. As for Putin? I think he's probably a homosexual; all that posing with bare chest and brandishing his muscles. Like a less tongue in cheek version of a character from The Village People. I may be wrong?

Three young women from an art collective who stood up and performed "Punk Prayer" inside a Russian Orthodox Cathedral in Moscow get sent to prison following trials which at best a shambles but seemed to be to make an example of those who would question the state and Putin in particular. They are smart, thinking women and they engage in the process in a way which both shows their contempt for their targets and an understanding of they would pay a price for their stand. Perhaps, compared to some critics these courageous women got off lightly-murder seems to be the way to silence critics. This is a powerful and thought provoking documentary. The orthodox bikies for god were downright scary leading one of the women's father to ask them outside the court whether he could expect a beating anytime soon. I think chances were to the affirmative. This like daesh, show intolerance and brutality go hand in hand with self-righteousness. 'They insult my sky fairy so it makes it right for me to beat them to a pulp' mentality. The speech each makes at the trial as to why they do what they do is worth the price of the ticket alone. At the end of this documentary I was left with a deep respect for these women and the message they were trying to get across in their performance art. Not self-indulgent art but down right revolutionary and dangerous.

well, maybe a few more extras ... like all the unseen stuff they must have filmed at pussy riot's hide out.
this would have been even better had it included the uncut sex in the museum as a bonus ... but anyway its a good watch, more girl bands like this please :)
