Product Description

In 1981, after a string of Top ten singles and two smash hit albums, Madness took to the silver screen. Yet while a group nicknamed the Nutty Boys might have been expected to indulge in the knockabout japes of A Hard Day's Night or Help! like The Beatles years before, Take It Or Leave It was a grittier, less glossy version of the events that led to them becoming one of Britain's most cherished bands.

Salvo is delighted to present this digitally restored version of the film along with commentary by Madness guitarist Chris Foreman and the film's director, Stiff Records' Dave Robinson.

The accompanying CD soundtrack album provides an interesting perspective on the band's early work and features 26 songs including singles, b-sides and album tracks. Two of the songs aren't by Madness: Fats Domino's 'I'm Walkin' and The Four Tops' 'Reach Out I'll Be There', both of which can be heard in the film.

The concept is so simple it's a wonder no-one thought of it before when raiding Madness' back catalogue for compilation ideas: take their film Take It Or Leave It, which largely relies on music from their first three albums and associated singles and release the soundtrack from it. And restore the film and add it as a bonus disc.

The film, which was a biopic of the rise and rise of Madness, inhabits a strange old world but one which is very pleasing to the ears of fans of early Madness. The concept is simple: when the band is rehearsing and playing live early on (before they've even adopted the name Madness) the songs are largely cover versions. Like so many garage (or in this case bedroom) bands they learn to play by attempting with various degrees of failure to play along with records they liked. It's important to note that at this stage the band was four mates: Mike Barson on piano (the only one who could actually play), Chris Foreman on guitar, Lee Thompson on (stolen property) saxophone and John Hasler on drums.

So after an opening blast of Don't Quote Me On That (as if to point out the some events in the film have been fictionalised to protect the innocent or for entertainment purposes) and The Business (the instrumental B side of Baggy Trousers that resurfaced as the brilliant Take It Or Leave It on second album Absolutely) the gear then shifts to the more pedestrian I'm Walkin' by Fats Domino, which is the first song we see the band murder in rehearsal. We also see Lee walk out for the first of many occasions fed up with Barson's pushiness.

... and a shame that this brilliant film has been transferred from VHS to DVD, without any improvement of sound or picture. Maybe someone has lost the mastertapes, I don't know, or maybe it's just lazyness, greed, bad management or bad judgement.
It's like playing the old VHS! The soundtrack is of course excellent, but one would expect better treatment of the film itself, being one of the very best pop-band-goes-actors-movie ever made.
Really, it's madness.

Filmed at the height of Madness's success in the early 80s, this raw and amateurish look at the Madness early days gives a good feel to life in London way back then. The soundtrack is absolutely fantastic and Suggs singing 'See You Later Alligator' is a must. The band were/are obviously not actors and at times they appear quite wooden and staged but this was filmed 30 years ago. Take a trip back in time and share a couple of laughs with those nutty North London boys. My favourite bit has got to be the London Underground scene, doing something that every 40 something would love to have done, fighting with light-sabres (Star Wars has a lot to answer for). Enjoy!

as someone who saw Madness on their first tour(with Clive Langer & The Boxes, and The Go-go's featuring Belinda Carlisle and Jayne Weidlin...), this took me back to those far-off heady days of the late 70s and early 80s...
I'm still into the 2-tone sound nowadays, quality never goes out of style - and this film is no exception.
Made on a shoe-string budget, it could give documentary footage of today a run for its money - and it visually namechecks the colours and grit of Scorcese's Mean Streets on many occasions(check out Mike Barson doing an unintentional impression of Johnny Boy throughout most of the film).
Good music and good times.

Have always been a Madness fan from when they were in the charts with 'One Step Beyond'. Shows how old I am!
Really well put together package, and DVD is worth a watch if you missed the film first time around. Nice to see the 'lads behind the men', if you understand what I mean. CD is also well produced, with a great look back at the Ska music that the boys roots are grounded in.
Well worth a look if your memories of these guys are connected with your 'informative years', as mine are!

Brilliant, the Nutty boys were young enough when this was filmed for it to be fly on the wall documentry, don't you just hate them, but not this one. This is a DVD I will watch again and again and when I am occupied doing things I can have the sound track playing in the background. So don't watch anything else watch this the heavy heavy monster movie of Madness...or listen to the sound track.

This is an all time favourite film of mine. Being a life long Madness fan, to have a proper digital copy of this film, with commentaries by David robinson and Chris Foreman and a soundtrack that has never been released. Great film/soundtrack package at a great price.
