Snuff is a key feature in the evolution of exploitation cinema. It's a triumph of savvy marketing and hype over quality.

Distributor Alan Shackleton took a discarded film by adult peddlers Roberta & Michael Findlay called "The Slaughter", and then added a new title and a totally new ending in which an actress is 'killed' on screen by the film's crew.

Of course it's all fake. But the controversy was enough to turn the film into a grindhouse hit during the 1970s.

I uised to hate the film but now realise its pretty cool. it tells of a director and his actress girlfriend who travel to Mardi gras to shoot a film and get killed by a cult while there. Clearly inspired by the Manson family murders, the film is fast moving and filled with funky 70s motifs (satanism, bikers, nudity, violence) even if it is very cheap and dubbed. Its no worse than a Herschell Gordon Lewis or Jess Franco film of the time.

The film looks great on bluray with a clean and bright image that reveals a lot more detail than the old DVD version. Its also framed correctly at 1.66 and is 16x9.

English audio is clear and we get optional subtitles to boot.

The extras are great too with new featurettes featuring interviews with an FBI agent, "Drive" director Nicholas Winding Refn, and others. We even get two trailers and a reversible cover (the reverse cover is the UK precert nasty cover. Nice!).

The bluray is region free so is playable wordlwide.

snuff was one of the most popular traded films at video trade shows
at the time where the film industry hit mega controversy here in England
due to films containing graphic scenes of rape and torture the most candidates
mostly were films about cannibalism and women in Nazi concentration camp
atrocities directors like Ruggero Deodato and Lucio Fulci along with others
like Sam Raimi and Wes Craven lastly Abel Ferrara and Dario Argento where accused of promoting films that
entice the viewers who watch them to go out and kill people that were born out of hysteria with
moralists and governmental politicians that felt like it was time to censor home video media
just like films at picturehouses by recommendations of the director of public prosecutions
and the British Film Board to censor and cut violent films and outright ban others however
snuff fell into the total ban along with gestapo's last orgy and many others but did not stop
the illegal distribution of these films at video trade shows and at conventions and now can
be viewed on video sharing media sites uncut that goes to show how times have shifted
from the dark days of video censorship and the atrocities of video nasty phenomenon.

HASH(0x93389888) out of 5 stars Groundbreaking 20 April 2014
By Fred Adelman - Published on Amazon.com

This film was a groundbreaking piece of advertising ballyhoo, but anyone who believe the girl tacked on at the end of the film is actually being killed should have their heads examined. The rest of the film is a 1971 film called THE SLAUGHTER, directed by Michael and Roberta Findlay, the king and Queen of sexploitation in the 60's & first half of the 70's. Michael was killed by the spinning blades of the back of a helicopter in the mid-70's. Roberta started making adult films and finished her career with a few unmemorable horror flicks. She is still alive.

HASH(0x93c0ba68) out of 5 stars I try not to be super critical of other people's films 18 Aug. 2014

I try not to be super critical of other people's films, but this one really didn't deliver at all. I guess it just wasn't what I expected and honestly was by far not even scary until a couple of scenes toward the end. Not that I don't like some Horror works that are not completely scary, but if that is what you say you are delivering at least make a better effort than this one did.

HASH(0x93a76228) out of 5 stars LOVE THIS FILM SO MUCH 3 Jan. 2014
By K. Michaels - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Blu-ray
...but i reckon im about the only person in the World that does! Even the bloke that they interview on this blu-ray appears to have only seen the film once! WTF? And he admits that he will probably never, ever watch it again! I like that its inept, it makes some scenes really weird as a consequence. I love it's hokeyness and i think the 2 main female leads are beautiful in this movie. 5 STARS & and i dont give a **** what anyone else thinks!

HASH(0x9338ffcc) out of 5 stars Fun Experience 3 Sept. 2015

Go into this movie for the experience of watching it. The movie itself is terrible. But that is what it makes it fun and enjoyable. The urban legend of the "snuff" movie wouldn't be the same without this movie.
