Product Description

Product Description

A host of British comedy luminaries - including veteran farceur Sir Brian Rix and, in his last film role, actor and stand-up comedian Ronald Shiner - star in this good-natured comic caper charting the misadventures of a hapless bunch of Brighton-based petty crooks dogged by disaster at every turn. The Night We Got the Bird is presented here in a brand-new transfer from the original film elements in its as-exhibited theatrical aspect ratio.

It's a set-up of craft and graft. 'Chippendale Charlie' forges the antiques; Cecil Gibson flogs 'em. There's only one flaw in the fiddle: they've no-one to shoulder the blame if things go wrong. No-one, that is, until gormless Bertie, the perfect idiot, joins the firm...

I love vintage British film comedies, and this is a good one. Farce specialist Brian Rix plays 'Bertie', an incompetent, Brighton-based antiques expert who works for 'Cecil', a crooked dealer played ( in his final film role ) by Ronald Shiner. Cecil cons people into buying worthless items of junk in the mistaken belief they are priceless antiques. After getting into trouble with a local gangster ( John Slater ), Cecil dies in a van crash, and Bertie winds up married to the dead man's dippy wife 'Julie' ( Dora Bryan ). But there is a nasty shock in store for Bertie on the wedding night - Cecil has been reincarnated as a parrot!

Like all good farces, this is amusingly scripted and played to the hilt by a sterling cast which includes Irene Handl, Liz Fraser, Terry Scott, Reginald Beckwith, John Le Mesurier, Leo Franklyn, and Robertson Hare. Kynaston Reeves also has a decent role as a tone deaf Justice Of The Peace called 'Warre-Monger'. Adapted from the Basil Thomas play 'The Lovebirds' by Ray Cooney, Terry Hilton, and Darcy Conyers ( who also directed ), it is rollicking good fun. Dated? Well, of course it is. So what? A good film is still a good film even if was made fifty-two years ago. It is a very sad person indeed who does not laugh at the sight of Irene Handl proudly displaying a lavatory seat on her living room wall because she believes it to be a valuble French mirror!

Rix made a number of movies around this time, including 'And The Same To You' ( with Tommy Cooper ), 'The Night We Dropped A Clanger' ( with Leslie Phillips ), and 'Dry Rot' ( with Sid James ). This is, I believe, the best of them. Ideal Sunday afternoon entertainment!

Another film from a great era long gone. Enjoyable viewing, a silly plot but funny & great character actors from that era. Loved it.

This film is hilarious, Brian Rix has never been better. In this day and age we all need something like this to cheer us up. There is a cameo performance from Knyaston Reeves as the magistrate that is totally side splitting.

This movie is an absolute tonic! With an all-star cast – including that of comedy favourites such as Brian Rix, Dora Bryan, Irene Handl and Terry Scott - to name but a few!

Rix’s character marries his ex (deceased) partners wife - but all hell breaks loose when it is discovered by Rix that her ex is reincarnated as a parrot - left them as wedding present by a mysterious and unknown source! A large farcical portion of the movie is taken up whilst attempting to swap a fake four-poster bed with that of the real thing – and without the occupants knowing it!

Lots and lots of laughs out loud in this priceless gem, and makes one realise (if they didn’t already) that they could not make a movie like this today to save their lives... Not only because the talent isn’t there, but those big names that were house-hold familiars – as if they’d never been anything else, are no longer with us either...

Dora Bryn (who we sadly lost very recently) is at her most hilarious and extremely young-looking and agile full of energy at almost forty! I don’t think many people of today can fully appreciate just how old people were at that age back then, and in THOSE days, but dressed in one scene as a school girl looks amazingly youthful and convincing.

NOTE: The lovely Gerald Cross makes a minor appearance.

Hilarious from start to finish. Being married to an antiques dealer Dora Brian, who's husband accidentally dies in tragic circumstances, she then remarries to Brian Rix. The Night We Got the Bird, brings drawbacks and setbacks to the start of her second marriage. The comedy side the parrot being given has a wedding present, his meant to be a reincarnation, of her first husband taumenting him and controlling, giving bad luck. Funny to watch from the start to finish.

I recall years ago that Brian Rix and co were famous for their Whitehall farces, some of them being transmitted on BBC TV on a Sunday night. The company did transfer their comedy talents to the big screen, some of which are quite funny today, despite their dated production values. This is one of the lesser ones. The cast is first rate though, some of the great comedy actors of their time appear in this; Dora Bryan; Liz Fraser; Leo Franklyn; Irene Handl and making a guest appearance, one of the all-time great stand up comedians, Ronald Shiner.

The film does have its moments though, the courtroom scene is wonderfully funny. The great character actor Kynaston Reeves playing a deaf magistrate causes chaos in the court with his numerous misunderstandings, much to the dismay of the clerk of the court played by another wonderful character actor, John Le Mesurier.

Sharp eyed viewers will spot the lovely Elspet Gray, who also happened to be Lady Rix in a farcial wedding scene in a tent. Worth a view, especially for older viewers who remember the golden oldie comedy teams of yesteryear, they were also great characters as well. Picture and sound are pretty decent.
