"She's a very splendid lady and immensely rich. She can afford to live in her dreams and she takes us into them for company. It's a tough environment. You wouldn't last a week in Mickey's dreams."

Like The Night of the Hunter, The Ballad of Tam Lin is one of those one-time-only directorial credits that's intriguing enough to make you wonder what could have been had the film been better received and its helmsman hadn't returned to acting. Not that Roddy McDowall's solo effort in the director's chair is anywhere near as remarkable or stylised as Laughton's, but it shares with it a modern-day dark fairytale quality that can be quite spellbinding, or at least for the first half of the film. Which is appropriate enough as it's an updating of a centuries old Scottish ballad about a young man who falls under the spell of the Queen of the Fairies in the days before pantomime when, as the film's narrator reminds us, she was a very dangerous character. Ian McShane is the young man wasting his life looking at the world through lime-coloured glasses without a care in the world, Ava Gardner the rich woman who holds court over beautiful but empty youths like Joanna Lumley, Jenny Hanley, Sinead Cusack, Bruce Robinson and nice-but-spectacularly-dim Madeline Smith ("I'll swallow anything as long as it's illegal!") while an appealing Stephanie Beacham, a world away from her later soap opera bitches and divas, is the vicar's daughter whose love for him threatens to wrest him from her clutches before she's tired of him. Which is not a good idea, since despite her belief that "One goes in, one goes out. That's the economy of life," she's the one who does the rejecting...

great film and even better on blu ray, This is a must have cult classic and sadly the only film by Roddy Mcdowell although Roddy did not like the way the film was finally put together and would not even talk about it after its release, it is a fantastic film and daring in its cinematography [for that era]. I personally love the film and Ava Gardner is stunningly mesmorizing, Ian Mcshane is at his best in this film and is deliciously handsome and a great contrast to the sweet kitten like stephanie Beecham [who looks beautiful with no make up on]. Lots of famous faces all in their early stages of career. I love the storyline and think it is way before its time in many ways aswell as being fashionably typical of that era.
