Lovely cover...however be thee wary this is a Franco flick & consequently approaches the themes obliquely.

So, yes this is crisp yet eeriely shot mood piece, there is a continual question of reality versus nightmare perception, a dreamy flavour. Those expecting the zombies & perhaps a Fulci or even Bianchi fest will be disappointed. On the extras of this clean Euroshock Collection disc, we see the Rollin shot 'inserts' that were to make it more zombieish. They are utterly tacky, have nothing to do with the rest of the film & involve no one of any consequence. Normally Rollin has a sense of poetry, these scenes are however weak, like a child video camera shooting his own version of Living Dead at Manchester Morgue.

The film proper, directors cut most likely as claimed, is poetic and slowly revealing the theme of death, being dead, undead, doom laden, accursed bloodlines etc. As ever if Franco fan, this is a must as it has an hilarious character played by the man Franco himself. He is supposedly mute, or muted at least, but can make strange sounds. At one point watching a ritual he seems to doze off. Class. Add this to odd dubbing usually sellotaped onto his films and one can see he is winking an eye at the entire genre. Though slow, it doesn't outstay it's welcome given the era.

Franco, undiluted, not overly perverse, but pervaded with a doomy gloomy atmosphere, punctuated with reality challenging camera work and plot weaves. Should be on a Franco viewing list, far above the likes of oasis of the zombies or similar.

A young girl visits her recently deceased father's castle on an island to hear the reading of the will. The castle is inhabited by a vampire-like coterie of eccentrics. The girl experiences various "erotic horror" episodes, from each of which she wakes, they are just dreams - or are they? Basically this is Franco's umpteenth variation of the "Eugenie Journey into Perversion" film with the plot reduced to almost nothing.

The DVD transfer here is mediocre as are the source reels used. In fact the film appears to be a composite of footage from different versions (perhaps with the laudable aim of getting as complete a version as possible). This inferior (though watchable) DVD quality is a shame because the film comes from Franco's best period, with a cast featuring most of the Franco favourites, plus a Bruno Nicolai score. Best of all, the entire film consists of the loose funny surreal scenes Franco fans guiltily adore. Parts of the film, especially towards the end, really are quite poetic and - shock! - quite technically accomplished. As a film I'd say Virgin has a similar warped appeal to Succubus, both Eugenies, Vampyre Lesbos or Ecstasy, so if you are a fan of Jess Franco's vintage stuff then it's worth getting, but could someone find and restore an original print?

I'm wondering why no one has mentioned so far that this DVD is nowhere near 85 minutes long: actually this version is under 80 minutes. It does not include the famous Zombie - scenes that French filmmaker Jean Rollin has added afterwards. They are not even as a bonus included. So unfortunately AMAZON is wrong with the runtime! German discs run longer than 80 minutes and include the Rollin Zombie scenes but they might not have English subtitles and are either in French or German language. The US-version is supposed to have 10 minutes of alternate footage as a bonus - whatever it is.
It has already been mentioned that this one is only for hardcore Franco fans; if you like a slow movie with the typical south American flair made by Jess Franco you can enjoy this one even in its shorter version.

This is unfortunately a really low quality print of the film, no better than watching a rip on youtube, I was really looking forward to watching this as I had seen some higher quality footage of the film but this was unwatchable, not only is it very a low quality version it also has some issues with lines across the image as if it wasnt processed properly from NTSC to PAL. The frame has also has for some reason been centred in the middle top of the screen, not even centralised. So in many ways it is better to go watch a youtube rip or spend ore money and get a better quality version.

I have to admit that I rather enjoyed this although I'm not sure it actually made sense and the film bears no resemblance whatsoever to the cover full of Romero-esque zombies.
The basic story is of a girl who visits the family mansion for the reading of her fathers will and the rest of the family are either zombies or vampires although I'm not sure which as it's never actually explained.
It has all the usual Jess Franco ingredients, some dodgy camera work, off the wall editing, dubious dubbing and a dash of nudity courtesy of the sultry Britt Nicholls and the adorably perky Christina Von Blanc, Franco himself also makes an appearance as some oddball madman.
All in all, a weird and wonderful 75 minutes of Franco.
