Product Description

Product Description

Elijah Wood stars in this remake of director William Lustig's 1980 horror classic of the same name. To say that Frank (Wood) is a troubled young man would be an understatement - as the ever-growing number of young women he has murdered since the death of his mother (America Olivo), with whom he enjoyed an unhealthily close relationship, demonstrates only too well. Frank runs a mannequin store and likes to apply the scalps of his victims to the models in his spare time. However, when beautiful young artist Anna (Nora Arnezeder) wanders into the store and talks about making use of its resources for an exhibition she is planning, she presents Frank with a troubling quandary. Anna appears to offer the possibility of a human relationship that will fill the void created by his mother's death, but she also excites his desire to kill and possess. Will Frank be able to overcome his homicidal urges?

Just when the streets seemed safe, a serial killer with a fetish for scalps starts stalking young women.

Frank is the withdrawn owner of a mannequin store, but his life changes when young artist Anna appears asking for his help with her new exhibition.

As their friendship develops and Frank's obsession escalates, it becomes clear that she has unleashed a long-repressed compulsion to stalk and kill...

As many have, and i am guilty of this too, i balked at the idea of another horror remake with Aja attached to it. HHE was amiable enough, but Pirahna was way over the top and turned into more of a parody.

Plus it starred Wood, who will always be the kid who ran screaming from Mel Gibson in Forever Young, so my expectations were not very high.

But how wrong I was. This is probably one of the best remakes I have seen in a while, and in my opinion, wood was a wonderful choice for Frank, he really brings an element of sympathy to his chilling character.

But what makes the film stand out even more is the way it's filmed. The film for the most part is literally from the perspective of Frank, so even though Wood is in it for ninety eight percent of the movie, he is rarely seen on screen, only in reflection and photo.

What brings the film down a little, is Franks back-story, it ruins the mysticism of him and his rationale, and gives it a little 'Psycho' feel to it.

The film is violent, but not too in your face, but thanks to Woods brilliant performance, this could be one of the best horror movies of the year.

Highly recommended.

A remake that becomes almost immediately it's own film - an arthouse horror film that should please hardcore horror fans and arthouse cineastes alike. Beautifully shot, amazing use of POV and a fragile central performance will keep you watching even when you want to look away. This is not for the squeamish, but it is for those who want the horror film to return to a more daring age.

Having not seen the original film that this is a remake of, I have no frame of reference. Entering into it oblivious to any sort of bias or guideline, this Maniac proves to be a nifty shocker, one that is not without style even as it puts churnings in your stomach.

It's the stylings that I imagine have upset a lot of horror fans, the first person approach and avant-garde sheens strip the pic of genuine suspense. Yet it's a brave film in that respect, as is the casting of Elijah Wood as the titular maniac.

Story is hardly original, boy had major mommy issues to deal with and has grown up disturbed. He has taken a career creating mannequins, but with real lady hair! Cue a bloody rampage of scalping - but wait! A pretty lady photographer has befriended him...

So it is what it is, a film that's grotty in narrative thrusts, yet one that's plush of cityscape photography and POV daring. An odd blend for sure, so it goes without saying, all these things need to be of interest to the viewer for it to butter your bloody sandwich. 7/10

I really like this i thought it was a great remake i wasn't sure when i saw that Elijah Wood was going to play the deranged killer but he turned out to do it to perfection i was not a Elijah Wood fan until i saw this i liked him in greenstreet but thats it, but here he shows that he can play pretty much any character and do it well so that was a good result, the film itself is pretty messed up and has a strange story Frank is a disturbed man who stalks and targets young women killing them and scalping them and then putting there hair on his mannequins who he thinks are his friends and talks to them as if they are alive this is a very weird film and very disturbing and gory which will more than likely have you looking away at some parts as it is pretty graphic for a little guy he is very agressive and has some strenth when he is in rage as most killers do what also works so well in this film is the music played throughout the soundtracks Haunted and Goodbye Horses are awesome which matches the movie very well which i think is important in a movie, i can undertstand why some people won't like this as it is pretty sick and unusaral and it won't be to everyones taste but for me this was a great remake to one of the most shocking horror films of all time and Elijah Wood done a great job here and was very convincing which is also important. If you have a strong stomoch and looking for something different then give this a go if you have seen the original then you know what to expect but if you havent then be warned it is gory very graphic and disturbing.

A bit too arty house pretentious for me. The 'experimental' POV decision was ineffective in whatever desired choosing the film makers intended. Works much better in a tried and trusted, from the victims point of view..much more disturbing and spine-chilling.

Unless the original version hasn't been viewed you may find this a bit pointless and dull. I found this to be the case even though I've watched both. Original wasn't great, but for its time did have an effective nastiness and quite a grim feel surrounding it. Also a pretty convincing pyscho (Joe Spinnell) and 'old school' make up effects, overseen by the 'legend' Tom Savini.

Whenever they feel the need to remake a film I think its a good call to focus on a particular film that weren't so good and could actually benefit from that and make a success, so was intrigued. Unfortunate decisions to take away the grim style, lead actor choice, watered down and sporadic gore/kills (apart from one kill, which could of been visually nastier but shied away from).

And the POV effect made this a rather luke warm and boring slasher. Elijah Wood is an ok acter, always trying and did so here. I wouldn't state that he was miscast but I think he tried too hard and missed the mark. Spinell had it but didn't have to do much just like Arnold in the Terminater. Was just natural to them because of their acting limitations and persona.

So that being said' a big disappointment. Some neat scenes but not nasty enough for me and very few of them and unlike original, a pretty dire ending, laugh out load cringe worthy. A generous two star then.
