Product Description

Capitalising on his remarkable success in On the Buses, Reg Varney took on the contrasting role of a third-rate holiday camp entertainer dreaming of stardom in this mid-seventies tragi-comedy feature. Also starring Diana Coupland and Lee Montague, The Best Pair of Legs in the Business was adapted from an individual ITV Playhouse drama and scripted by Emmerdale Farm creator Kevin Laffan - presented here in a brand-new transfer from the original film elements, in its correct aspect ratio.

'Sherry' Sheridan, a middle-aged compere and drag artiste currently stationed at a caravan site, is low on talent but high on ambition. Convinced he just needs one decent break to launch himself into the big time, he's relentlessly optimistic - but sadly unaware that his family life is crumbling around him. Can Sherry manage to secure both his job, and his marriage?

Reg Varney is engrained in the British consciousness as randy bus driver Stan Butler in the classic ITV comedy series On the Buses - The Complete Series [DVD] (1968-73), but this excellent British drama shows a little more of Reg's versatility as a well-loved actor in the good old fashioned British tradition. The previous reviewers on here who have slated the film are viewing it with 21st century eyes and expectations - so the fact that the star of the film is not a young twenty-something flashing his skinny pecs in a feast of double-entendres and over the top explicit language which would litter a similar film made these days has clearly made them think they have purchased something of little value.

The film is actually very gentle and moving as it peels away the shiny veneer of Reg's character as we see his marriage crumble. The fact that his cheating wife is played elegantly by the extremely talented Diana Coupland, another British comedy stalwart from Bless this House: Complete Series [DVD] is a major plus. The film also features a very young (and handsome) Johnny Briggs before he found fame as Coronation Street's Mike Baldwin. The setting and characters are very of their time - almost like uncovering a time capsule showing a slice of life (and how Brits entertained themselves in the early 1970s).

Overall, the film is very touching and well worth the time and effort of viewing it if - like me - you find yourself with nothing to watch on current tv channels overfilled with bore-fests of desperate singing reality shows, cops chasing delinquent joyriders, and young Brits vomiting after binge-drinking in either our towns or abroad.

I saw this film a number of years ago on tv and watched it primarily because of the late great Reg Varney. It was a revelation, Varney provides many laughs but at the same time gives an extremely moving, at times heartbreaking performance as the drag act entertainer putting up with lifes woes. A sadly neglected film, Im so happy to have it on DVD now, proof if needed what a versatile actor Varney was.

**The shorter, earlier (1968) version of this play starring Reg, made for TV, can be found on the ON THE BUSES SERIES 7 dvd set as an extra**

I always had Varney down as a second-rate comic, albeit funny in On The Buses. I saw 'Legs' by chance years ago and my eyes were opened. To a degree I'd noticed a much greater depth to Varney in the first On The Buses film (less said about the other two the better), but 'Legs' really seems to bring this out in him. I think Varney excels as the tragic-comedy 'Sherry', a fading drag artist, one who knows he's fading, even failing, but not admitting it to himself or anyone else.

I think there's some solid and surprising acting from Varney and his supporting cast, a very overlooked and underrated solid supporting cast including Diana Coupland who, as his sensitive and supportive wife, who is also outstanding - again to my surprise.

For years I have hoped 'Legs' would be released and to my surprise here it is. Bought it without reservation and enjoyed it again. If you like Varney in On The Buses you will be as surprised as me I think. If you don't like Varney - I think your opinion might change. Perhaps Varney painted himself into a corner with On The Buses, who knows, but this film I think does show how underrated he actually was.

Best Pair of Legs was always shown in Black and White in the middle of the night. It is a hard film to watch. Reg Varney pulls out all the stops - he had more depth than just Stan the Bus Driver. This film explores family, divorce and a life on the the skids.

I didnt know what to expect when I bought this film. Reg Varney in On The Buses was always a bit too slapstick for me, but here he shows what a good actor he really was. The storyline is set in a 60s camp site, as camp comic and host he tries to keep the not so upmarket holiday makers amused while his family life is breaking down. Not a bad film at all, worth a watch.

The thing that first astounded me about this film was that Reg Varney could act. Network - the legends that they are - do tend to rather mis-sell their DVD releases and the cover of this with a beaming Varney, coupled with 70s milf Diana Coupland suggested to me a romp in a holiday park. I envisaged a plethora of custard pies, needless boobie flashes and at least one moment where Varney gets into trouble and his bum comes under some sort of siege. Holiday On The Buses part 2 thinks I. How wrong I was.

This is a sometimes painfully serious film in which Varney plays the part of a washed-up and worn-out comedy entertainer in a crummy holiday park. His wife, the knee-meltingly lovely Diana Coupland, is tired of him, his boss thinks he's a waste of existence and his son is completely ashamed. If it doesn't sound like much fun that's because it isn't. It's hard work with very little about it to make it easier to watch.

What makes it compelling viewing is just how well Varney plays the role. Especially considering this was at the very height of his On The Buses fame. It's a real pity he didn't do more straight roles as he was clearly quite good at it.

Would I recommend this film? I would because it is quite poignant and quite moving in places. Although the ending seems rushed and a little incomplete. It loses a star because it just doesn't have enough about it to make me actually like it.

But well worth owning and for the price it's a steal.
