Product Description

Classic Western from 1957. When lawyer Mitch Baker's (Scott Brady) father is killed by gun-runners, he pursues the villains who escape into Mexico. Gang leader Jim Simmons, beyond the reach of the American law, is confident that his henchmen can get rid of Mitch but he's mistaken... Mitch plays the waiting game in the border town of Mission, Texas, where he attracts the interest of Angelita (Anne Bancroft), a young Indian woman. The sheriff warns Mitch not to take the law into his own hands, but he's determined to avenge his father's death his way.

The Restless Breed is directed by Allan Dwan and written by Steve Fisher. It stars Scott Brady, Anne Bancroft, Jay C. Flippen, Rhys Williams, Leo Gordon and Jim Davis. Music is by Edward L. Alperson Junior and cinematography by John W. Boyle.

1865 and Mitch Baker (Brady) travels to Mission in Texas to find out who murdered his father who was working for the Secret Service. His father was investigating the operations of "Newton's Raiders", a gang of gun runners fronted by Ed Newton (Davis) who are supplying arms to Emperor Maximillian in Mexico. Mitch has no intention of upholding the law, he has only one thing on his mind; revenge!

"Yer a wild eyed hooligan looking for a cheap revenge, not to satisfy the ghost of your father, but your own hurt - warped - disturbed ego".

Another of Allan Dwan's vastly under valued Westerns, it's also the last of his genre offerings. Production value is not high end, the Pathe Color is poor, the sets sometimes wobble and it features one of the most frustratingly awful music compositions laid down for a 1957 Oater, but Dwan could quite often craft a silk purse out of a sow's ear. So it be the case here.

The Haunted Room.

It's a standard revenge tale at its core as angry young Mitch Baker arrives in town and promptly sets about dismantling all the scumbags who cross his path. He's quick on the draw, he bristles with machismo and he's catching the eye of the ladies. Giving this simplest of formula extra weight is a religious angle, and no it's not eye rollingly preachy. Mitch finds lodgings with Reverend Simmons (Williams great) and his adopted brood of half-breed children, the eldest of which is a sexually awakened Angelita (Bancroft).

"The Restless Breed" marked the last western made by the indefatigable Hollywood veteran Allan Dwan who first directed a film in 1911, his last being in 1961. Now that is what you call longevity! An interesting ploy used from his silent experience was having the characters in this film perpetually eavesdropping on each other. The story concerns Scott Brady as the son of a murdered government agent out to avenge his father's death. The action takes place in a Mexican-American border town. That wonderful actress Anne Bancroft, who many will remember for her unforgettable portrayal of Mrs Robinson in "The Graduate", provides the attractive Mexican romantic interest for our hero, in what was an unusual role for her.

The film was clearly made on a miniscule budget which does show. There are very few exterior shots and most of the action takes place using the same sets. Even so the director manages to maintain the interest. The film has an autere look to it that bigger films fail to achieve. Rhys Williams as the Reverand with whom Brady stays, also brings in a religious theme to the film, trying to steer Brady away from revenge. In one scene Williams tends to the wound of one of Brady's adversaries, much to his consternation. Those much used character actors Leo Gordon and Jay C Flippen also offer strong support, with Flippen also trying to steer Brady firmly onto the side of law and order. But will they manage to persuade our hero to seek a more peaceful resolution than the Colt 45?

Sadly this unusual B western fare was spoilt by the quality of this Spanish imported DVD. Unfortunately the synchronisation between voices and sound was way out, which made it quite comical but almost impossible to watch. This should perhaps make me a little wary of Suevia film DVDs.

Good movie. The quality was better than I had expected. It's nice to see some of these rather unknown westerns being released on dvd.
