HASH(0x950e7d20) out of 5 stars 50 Shades of Franco... 24 May 2013
By 4-Legged Defender - Published on Amazon.com
Now that most of these films are out of print, this is one helluva bargain for your buck. And now that Jess Franco is no longer with us (RIP), this is a fine way to pay tribute to the great-grandaddy of exploitation horror and Eurosleaze, and I mean that in the best way imaginable. High praise and props to the High Priest of softcore sexploitation. AND you get Soledad Miranda, Marie Liljedahl, Maria Rohm, Alice Arno, Romina Powers and several other comely Eurobabes both draped and undraped in late 60's - early 70's fashions to gawk at during these transgressive treats that also pay homage to the Grand Marquis de Sade. In addition, we are treated to actors like Chris Lee, Klaus Kinski, Jack Palance and Akim Tamiroff portraying malicious malefactors. What's not to love?

Jess directed three out of these four films and, IMO, are the ones worthy of discussion in this set.
My fave is 'Eugenie de Sade' featuring Franco's first fixation before Lina Romay (RIP), Soledad Miranda (RIP), cute as a button and filthy as hell (sigh). Together, these four films form an opus of delirious, depraved overindulgence befitting de Sade's work without ever actually getting near them literally - Jess used the tales as reference points to produce some mind-numbing balm of seductive sedititious cinema, with varying results, of course. After all, this IS Jess Franco we're discussing, and his output was as patchy as it was prolific. But these are near-perfect examples of a focused, fixated Franco, producing 3-4 films a year on miniscule micro-budgets, so it's to his everlasting credit that those who can appreciate such titillating trash can indulge their sensibilities in an all-nighter with this subversive sleazemeister and have themselves a blast. 4 stars for those who appreciate such shady celluloid... All Hail Franco!

HASH(0x973626fc) out of 5 stars Franco's De Sade films plus one French version 14 Feb. 2015

The title of may be deceiving to some given the recent popularity of the book "Fifty Shades of Grey". This collection of films are based on the stories "Justine" and "Eugenie" by the original Mr. Sadism himself, the Marquis De Sade. If "Fifty Shades of Grey" is your cup of tea then you may be interested in these films.

The two films based on "Eugenie" are directed by the late great Jess Franco. They are both more modern interpretations of De Sade's story about a girl who submits her will to crime and perversion. "Eugenie De Sade" stars the beautiful Soledad Miranda who plays Eugenia. She joins her father in a series of taboo sadomasachistic murders that ends as she has a self realization with a twisted climax (no pun intended). "Eugenie" stars Marie Liljendahl as the protaganist, if you will and Christopher Lee as Dolmance, the leader of a sadist cult of devoted followers to Marquis De Sade. Eugenie is thrown into a world of depravity by her father and his lover. She is forced to commit unspeakable acts until she finds herself anew as someone she couldn't possibly dream of.

The film "Marquis De Sade's Justine" is again directed by Jess Franco and is his "less is more" version of the story without all of De Sade's depravity. "Justine" is a story of a orphan girl's torrid journey through a world of vice and virtue. She must overcome some of the most horrible and demeaning tortures at her own expense only to hold on to whatever dignity she is left with. "Justine De Sade" is the French version of the story and is more graphic in detail. It is also spoken in the prose of De Sade.

I came away from these films with an appreciation for De Sade and an understanding of often diffcult to embrace subject matter. De Sade was probably empathetic to his characters when he wrote these stories. A person could very much feel the same. Perhaps there is something reflective to De Sades visions of humanity that has yet to be embraced by the world. Have a look for yourself. I highly recommend these films for open minded adults.
